Say That


Language is like a life form, but we don't think about it that way. Every day new words are being born, like a new species, and with them, entire new branches on the tree of life, or at least, the tree of knowledge. 

This first article is long only because the part about controlling people's dreams is pretty cool:

Parasomnia: What happens inside a sleepwalker's brain?

Parasomnia - sleepwalking

Those who experience parasomnias during non-REM sleep sometimes report having dream-like experiences and sometimes appear completely unconscious (i.e., on automatic pilot).

They provoke a parasomnia episode in the lab, where on the first night the patient sleeps normally, but on the second night is kept awake and only allowed to sleep the next morning, when they are exposed to a loud sound upon entering the deep-sleep stage. In some cases, this results in a parasomnia episode. 

In 56% of episodes, patients reported that they had been dreaming during the episode. "It was often about an impending misfortune or danger. Some reported that they thought the ceiling was going to come down. One patient thought they'd lost their baby and was searching through the bedsheets, and stood up in bed to try to save ladybugs from gliding down the wall and dying," Siclari explains.

"In 19% of the cases, the patients weren't experiencing anything and simply awoke to find themselves doing things, almost like a trance."

"Interestingly, patients almost never mention the sound that initiated the parasomnia episode, but rather some other type of impending danger. The louder we go with the sound volume, the higher the chance that we provoke an episode."

Physicists move one step closer to topological quantum computing

Theory predicts that a combination of superconductivity and the quantum anomalous Hall effect will give rise to topologically protected particles called Majorana fermions that will potentially revolutionize future technologies such as quantum computers.

Such a combination can be achieved by inducing superconductivity in the edge of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator that is already resistance-free. The resultant chiral Majorana edge state, which is a special type of Majorana fermions, is a key to realizing "flying qubits" (or quantum bits) that are topologically protected.

They're building long quantum channels using vacuum sealed tubes with an array of spaced-out lenses. These vacuum beam guides, about 20 centimeters in diameter, would have ranges of thousands of kilometers and capacities of more than 1,013 qubits per second, better than any existing quantum communication approach. Photons of light encoding quantum data would move through the vacuum tubes and remain focused thanks to the lenses.

New Report Reveals Dirty Secret of Army Psychological Operations

Military information Support Operations, or MISO - the military's new word for "psyops"

A December 2010 secretary of defense memorandum, issued during the Obama administration, discontinued the use of the term “psyops” and replaced it with Military information Support Operations, or MISO. The memo stated that the term “psyop” had become misleading and, “although psyop activities rely on truthful information, credibly conveyed, the term psyop tends to connote propaganda, brainwashing, manipulation, and deceit.” The memo noted that for that reason, the Pentagon would “no longer use the term psyop to describe activities (in peacetime or during combat operations) that are intended to influence foreign audiences.” Nonetheless, the Army continues to use the term “psyop” or psyops when referring to its units and to the overall career field.

Kirigami electrodes unfold new horizons for brain organoid research

Assembloids - organoids that mimic many aspects of the growth and maturation of human brain circuits

There breakthrough was instead of a flexible, mesh-like electrode that could be partly inserted into an organoid, a kirigami-like device that could fully cradle the organoid. The organoid then continues to grow, eventually engulfing the device's supportive strands. For the hammock-like electrode to work, it needed to be flexible enough to allow the organoid to grow naturally and stable enough to stay intact over many months of recording. 

Now they can monitor organoids throughout their entire development.

A star like a Matryoshka doll: New theory for gravastars

Gravastars (it's not a new word) - gravitational condensate stars

They exhibit a gravity at their surface that is essentially as strong as that of a black hole, hence resembling a black hole for all practical purposes. On the other hand, gravastars do not have an event horizon, that is, a boundary from within which no information can be sent out, and their core does not contain a singularity.

Instead, the center of a gravastar is made up of an exotic (dark) energy that exerts a negative pressure to the enormous gravitational force compressing the star. The surface of a gravastar is represented by a wafer-thin skin of ordinary matter, the thickness of which approaches zero.

Nestar - Theoretical physicists Daniel Jampolski and Prof. Luciano Rezzolla of Goethe University Frankfurt have now presented a solution to the field equations of general relativity that describes the existence of a gravastar inside another gravastar. They have given this hypothetical celestial object the name "nestar" (from the English "nested").

Phosphene - A phosphene is the phenomenon of seeing light without light entering the eye. The word phosphene comes from the Greek words phos (light) and phainein (to show). Phosphenes that are induced by movement or sound may be associated with optic neuritis.


Random thought on words - "woods" and "weeds" sound too similar for me not to have ever noticed:

Woods - From Middle English wode, from Old English wudu, widu (“wood, forest, grove; tree; timber”), from Proto-West Germanic *widu, from Proto-Germanic *widuz (“wood”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁weydʰh₁- (“to separate”).

Weeds - From Middle English weed, weod, from Old English wēod (“weed”), from Proto-West Germanic *weud (“weed”). Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *wi-wdʰ-o-m, an archaic reduplicated noun formation of *wedʰ- (“to wind; bend; entangle; tie”). Note however that this pattern is extremely rare: *bebruz and *hwehwlą are the only reduplicated nouns that are positively reconstructed for Proto-Germanic proper (but see *gaukaz for another hypothetically potential example; and in West Germanic there is *weukā (“wisp, wick”) among a few others).

Not a language expert, but I see "woods" as "to separate" and "weeds" as "to wind together"

Neuromorphic Bodybots


Artificial neurons go quantum with photonic circuits

At the heart of all artificial intelligence applications are mathematical models called neural networks. These models are inspired by the biological structure of the human brain, made of interconnected nodes. Just like our brain learns by constantly rearranging the connections between neurons, neural networks can be mathematically trained by tuning their internal structure until they become capable of human-level tasks: recognizing our face, interpreting medical images for diagnosis, even driving our cars. Having integrated devices capable of performing the computations involved in neural networks quickly and efficiently has thus become a major research focus, both academic and industrial.

One of the major game changers in the field was the discovery of the memristor, made in 2008. This device changes its resistance depending on a memory of the past current, hence the name memory-resistor, or memristor. Immediately after its discovery, scientists realized that (among many other applications) the peculiar behavior of memristors was surprisingly similar to that of neural synapses. The memristor has thus become a fundamental building block of neuromorphic architectures.

The "Loihi" chip can get up to sixteen times more energy-efficiency than non-neuromorphic hardware.

These chips are chasing something the brain already does naturally, and much more efficiently than our conventional chips, because our brain stores information as something called "internal variables" which are from the used neurons in a network getting fatigued, and then just measuring which ones in the network are fatigued, to know which ones were just activated. Neurons are storing memory simply by not working, and that's about as energy efficient as you can get.

A neuromorphic computing architecture that can run some deep neural networks more efficiently

In their experiments, Maass and his colleagues showed that the tendency of many biological neurons to rest after spiking could be replicated in neuromorphic hardware and used as a "computational trick" to solve time series processing tasks more efficiently. In these tasks, new information needs to be combined with information gathered in the recent past (e.g., sentences from a story that the network processed beforehand).

"We showed that the network just needs to check which neurons are currently most tired, i.e., reluctant to fire, since these are the ones that were active in the recent past," Maass said. "Using this strategy, a clever network can reconstruct based on what information was recently processed. Thus, 'laziness' can have advantages in computing."

"Our chip processes information through what we call 'computation-by-propagation,' meaning that unlike clock-based systems, computations occur as light propagates through the chip," says Aflatouni. "We are also skipping the step of converting optical signals to electrical signals because our chip can read and process optical signals directly, and both of these changes make our chip a significantly faster technology."

"When current computer chips process electrical signals they often run them through a Graphics Processing Unit, or GPU, which takes up space and energy," says Ashtiani. "Our chip does not need to store the information, eliminating the need for a large memory unit."

"A movie usually plays between 24 and 120 frames per second. This chip will be able to process nearly 2 billion frames per second! For problems that require light speed computations, we now have a solution, but many of the applications may not be fathomable right now."

New hardware offers faster computation for artificial intelligence, with much less energy

Massive:
Practical inorganic material in the fabrication process enables devices to run 1 million times faster than previous versions, which is also 1 million times faster than the synapses in the human brain.

Programmable resistors are the key building blocks in analog deep learning, just like transistors are the core elements for digital processors. By repeating arrays of programmable resistors in complex layers, researchers can create a network of analog artificial "neurons" and "synapses" that execute computations just like a digital neural network. This network can then be trained to achieve complex AI tasks like image recognition and natural language processing.

"Analog deep learning" - computation is performed in memory, so enormous loads of data are not transferred back and forth from memory to a processor.

"Normally, we would not apply such extreme fields across devices, in order to not turn them into ash. But instead, protons ended up shuttling at immense speeds across the device stack, specifically a million times faster compared to what we had before. And this movement doesn't damage anything, thanks to the small size and low mass of protons. It is almost like teleporting."

Word Olympics


Wordporn is a word I use to tag articles that make the word part of my brain excited. But after listening to a recent talk about hyper-heteronormalization algorithms on porn websites at a computer enthusiast conference, and maybe something about the normalization of porn in general, I left thinking maybe word-porning like food porn, sports porn, or car porn is a bad idea. 

Maybe word candy will do. I wonder where all this word-porning came from anyway. Maybe it started with food porn. I find a 2010 article in Gastronomica, The Journal for Food Studies titled "Food Porn", where the author attempts to find the origin of the phrase, but uses the phrase "sex porn" and I just had to stop there, because that's an interesting retronym if I've ever heard one.

Zentropy
Zentropy theory notes that the thermodynamic relationship of thermal expansion, when the volume increases due to higher temperature, is equal to the negative derivative of entropy with respect to pressure, i.e., the entropy of most material systems decreases with an increase in pressure. This enables Zentropy theory to be able to predict the change of volume as a function of temperature at a multiscale level, meaning the different scales within a system. Every state of matter has its own entropy, and different parts of a system have their own entropy.

As a complementary source of power, the NUS team also looked into harvesting energy from the environment. Their research found that typical office and home environments have parasitic electromagnetic (EM) waves that people are exposed to all the time, for instance, from a running laptop. They're calling the mass of human brain cells a cyborg:
The mass, which the researchers call a cyborg, created by placing human stem cells on top of a micro-electric array, where they grew into brain cells. 

Electrical signals are sent to the array to tell them where the ball is located. If electrodes to the right of a cluster fire, for example, the brain cells know that the ball is to their left. The distance of the signal gives the cells information regarding frequency. As with real Pong, the paddle can only move left and right.
