The drink is called Release, and it's filled with urine allegedly discarded by Amazon delivery drivers and collected from plastic bottles by the side of the road.

Release is just marketing for a new documentary called The Great Amazon Heist, which shows how easy it is to bypass Amazon's buying and selling safeguards, but Oobah is a cultural genius.

On Modern Tongues and the Slipperiness of the Spoken Word


We are always being reminded that Darwin used the "tree of language" to come up with his "tree of life" idea; others might refer to it as evolution, natural selection, or survival of the fit.

Our findings lead to the conclusion that the more mixing that occurs between different social groups, the more challenging it becomes for language varieties to coexist within the same society," said author Pablo Rosillo-Rodes. "The dynamics of the system has a subtle dependence on both the preferences of the speakers and the coupling between different communities."

Existing work from sociolinguistics showed that the social prestige of a language was considered the main factor leading to its extinction or survival. Insights in language contact from these previous studies, in combination with sociolinguistic studies on language ideologies, were used by the researchers to present a comprehensive picture of how language varieties are distributed in societies.

The team chose a quantitative approach based on a society in which only one language with two varieties, the standard and the vernacular, existed. The resulting mathematical model can predict the conditions that allow for the coexistence of different languages, presenting a comprehensive view of how language varieties are distributed within societies.

Rare pre- and post-operative recordings show what happens after the brain loses a hub

This is the first direct recordings of the human brain in the minutes before and after a brain hub crucial for language meaning was surgically disconnected, and was conducted during surgical treatment of two patients with epilepsy. 

The innovation in this study was that the neurosurgery team was able to safely complete the procedure with the recording electrodes left in place or replaced to the same location after the procedure.

"The rapid impact on the speech and language processing regions well removed from the surgical treatment site was surprising, but what was even more surprising was how the brain was working to compensate"

The findings disprove theories challenging the necessity of specific brain hubs by showing that the hub was important to maintain normal brain processing in language. (Don't forget the girl who could smell despite having no olfactory cortex.)

Study suggests existence of a universal, nonverbal communication system

Hints of the presence of a universal system of communication:

The children either spoke English or Turkish. They were asked to use their hands to act out specific actions, such as running into a house.

They found that when the children spoke and gestured at the same time, their gesture followed the conventions of their language, with clear differences between the gestures of the Turkish and English speakers.

When the children used gestures without speaking, however, their gestures were remarkably similar.

  • Words associated with things people can see or imagine, termed "concrete" words. For example, "cat" is more concrete than "animal," which is more concrete than "organism"
  • Words that are more arousing, including words like "sex" and "fight"

Early acquisition, concreteness, and arousal give linguistic information a selective advantage.

Faulty machine translations litter the web

They state, "Machine generated, multi-way parallel translations not only dominate the total amount of translated content on the web in lower resource languages, it also constitutes a large fraction of the total web content in those languages."

Such content, they suggested, tends to be simpler, lower-quality passages "likely produced to generate ad revenue." Since fluency and accuracy are lower for machine-trained material, numerous translations will lead to even less accurate content and increase the odds of AI hallucination.

Regions under-represented on the web such as African nations and other countries with more obscure languages will face greater challenges in establishing reliable large language models.

Can any English word be turned into a synonym for “drunk”? Not all, but many can

Drunkonyms - like the words wasted, smashed, hammered, obliterated

Because the British are far better at this game than the Americans, also see - wellied, trousered, ratarsed, "I was utterly gazeboed," or "I am going to get totally and utterly carparked." (these come from the British comedian Michael McIntyre in a bit concerning the many slang terms posh British people use to describe being drunk)

They found the basic structure is common - combining "be" or "get" with an intensifying adverb ("totally") and a random word ending in "-ed."

  • Over the 26-week winter of near perpetual darkness and harsh weather, Clark and his fellow inhabitants at Rothera would work, eat and socialise together with barely any contact with home. Satellite phone calls are expensive and so used sparingly. With just each other for company and limited entertainment on the base, the "winterers", as they are known, would chat to each other – a lot. 
  • Their common language was English, sprinkled with slang words unique to the Antarctic research stations.
  • 10-minute recordings every few weeks; sit in front of a microphone and repeat the same 29 words as they appeared on a computer screen.
  • They found some of the vowels had shifted.
  • One of those changes was the "ou" sound in words such as "flow" and "sew" that shifted towards the front of the vocal tract.
  • They also saw some of the winterers beginning to converge in the way they pronounced three other vowels.

"When we speak to each other, we memorise that speech and then that has an influence on our own speech production," says Harrington. In effect, we transmit and infect one another with pronunciations every time we interact with others. Over time, if we have regular and prolonged contact with someone, we can start to pick up their sounds.

AI analysis of social media language predicts depression severity for white Americans, but not Black Americans

Remember the point here is not that an entire subroup of the population doesn't get depressed, it's that models don't work for those people, so they need to be tuned better.

The study, which recruited 868 consenting participants who identified themselves as Black or white, demonstrated that models trained on Facebook language used by white participants with self-reported depression showed strong predictive performance when tested on the white participants. However, when the same models were trained on Facebook language from Black participants, they performed poorly when tested on the Black participants, and showed only slightly better performance when tested on white participants.

While depression severity was associated with increased use of first-person singular pronouns ("I," "me," "my") in white participants, this correlation was absent in Black participants. Additionally, white people used more language to describe feelings of belongingness ("weirdo," "creep"), self-criticism ("mess," "wreck"), being an anxious-outsider ("terrified," "misunderstood"), self-deprecation ("worthless," "crap"), and despair ("begging," "hollow") as depression severity increased, but there was no such correlation for Black people. For decades, clinicians have been aware of demographic differences in how people express depressive symptoms, and this study now demonstrates how this can play out in social media.

First languages of North America traced back to two very different language groups from Siberia

Nichols' techniques involve the use of linguistic typology, a field that involves comparing languages and organizing them based on shared criteria. To learn more about early North American languages, she compiled lists of language characteristics and applied them to all known languages. She then scored each of the languages based on the revealed qualities. This allowed her to compare the languages as a way to find resemblances among them and spot patterns.

Nichols found that she could trace the languages spoken in early North America back to just two lineages, both of which originated in Siberia. They came, she notes, with the people who made their way across land bridges during Ice Age glaciation events.

Study shows babies learn to imitate others because they themselves are imitated by caregivers

  • Social learning avoids laborious trial and error; the wheel does not have to be reinvented each time.

Social bonding gets people on the same wavelength, neural synchronization study suggests

176 three-person groups of human participants wore caps with fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) electrodes while they communicated with strangers in a face-to-face triangle. (But it sounds like they communicated via text message, although they were sitting across from each other.)

This writeup is so concise I have to copy the whole thing:

Each group democratically selected a leader, so each group of three ultimately included one leader and two followers. After strategizing together, groups played two economic games designed to test their willingness to make sacrifices to benefit their group (or harm other groups).

Experimenters assigned some triads to go through a bonding session, where they were grouped according to color preferences, given uniforms, and led through an introductory chat session to build familiarity.

Bonded groups spoke more freely and bounced between speakers more frequently and rapidly, relative to groups that didn't experience this bonding session. This bonding effect was stronger between leaders and followers than between two followers.

Neural activity in two brain regions linked to social interaction, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) and the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ), aligned between leaders and followers if they had bonded.

The authors state that this neural synchronization suggests that leaders may be anticipating followers' mental states during group decision-making, though they acknowledge that their findings are restricted to East Asian Chinese individuals communicating via text (without non-verbal cues), whose culture emphasizes group cohesion and commitment towards group leaders.

"Our findings challenge the conventional understanding"

Cooperative interactive tasks between individuals with weak social ties result in more synchronized brain activity compared to individuals with strong ties. 

The participants were given a joint tapping task where they had to tap a mouse button in opposite rhythms. They wore earphones and had to anticipate their partner's movements.

Researchers suggest that the lack of familiarity between strangers requires a more involved process for predicting each other's actions or behaviors in a cooperative task. Consequently, this heightened engagement leads to a more efficient transfer of information between closely connected nodes within the neural network.

Understanding the spread of behavior: How long-tie connections accelerate the speed of social contagion

This is all getting pretty scary; I used to think this was something far off, but it sure seems we have both the knowledge and the means to do these things, and I wonder how it's being done already, and highly doubt it's not being done already. Too irresistible. 

Initially, researchers thought highly clustered ties that are close together in networks created the perfect environment for the spread of complex behaviors that require significant social reinforcement. However, long ties, which are created through randomly rewired edges that make them "longer," accelerate the spread of social contagions. 

(So this is not about weak vs strong ties, but short vs long.)

Having a small probability of adoption below the contagion threshold is enough to ensure that random rewiring accelerates the spread of these contagions.

"Further work could study such strategies for seeding complex behaviors"

This research suggests those wanting to achieve fast, total spread would benefit from implementing intervention points across network neighborhoods with long-tie connections to other network regions

Taxi Driver and the Advent of Graffiti in New York City as Seen in Movies from 1971-1979

This is a typical scene from the movie Taxi Driver 1976, looking through the rainstreaked windshield on the city streets at night.

For no particular reason I'm watching The French Connection, 1971. Twenty minutes into the movie I get this weird feeling - it's filmed entirely in New York City, and parts of it look pretty close to what you would see if you went there today, 2024. But something was missing. 

There's no graffiti in the entire movie. It's filmed all throughout New York, on the streets downtown, on the elevated subways way uptown. Inside the subways, on the platforms. Brick walls, under bridges, it's all there. And not one inch has a piece of graffiti on it. 

There's one scene where far in the distance there might be like a hobo sign next to a loading dock behind a building. And maybe a scrawled Tony somewhere, maybe permanent marker. 

I thought that like most things, graffiti didn't just come from nowhere and all at once. There's always something that comes before. But no, not for graffiti. Like sure the aerosol spraycan came out in the 50's, but it took something to make it catch on. And that something must have happened in New York City sometime before 1979, when we see the movie The Warriors and a city consumed by crime, and graffiti.

The Warriors, just like French Connection, relies on the subway almost as another character - here they're using it to evade both gangs and cops, like some omnipotent and very reliable sidekick. This is why I like using these two movies as the limits of this completely unscientific study - in the history of graffiti, the subway is important enough to be like a character in itself.

On the origin of graffiti in New York City, the easy way out of this question is to point to the blackout, summer of 1977. This event is often credited as the birth of Hip Hop, because it's when all the now-famous DJs got their equipment (for free). All these DJs now have sound systems and turntables, and they can have big parties, and the scene explodes. Anyway, that's the easy answer. 

I thought it would be better to look at it through the lens of movies filmed in New York City from 1971 to 1979, so here we go:

The French Connection, 1971
  • It's filmed in New York City, but there's no graffiti. None.
The climax of the film takes place inside a series of subway cars, and we see various subway stations, brick walls, payphones. You get a good sampling of the city, and can be sure, no graffiti. This is the beginning.

Super Fly, 1972
  • Trace amounts (first 20 min, last 10 min).
This is filmed mostly in Harlem. 

Mean Streets, 1973
  • No graffiti (a flower, in spray paint, 20 min).
Note this is filmed in an Italian neighborhood circa 1970, not sure where, but granted it's not the best place to go looking for graffiti at this time. 


Death Wish, 1974
  • Here we go. First scene in NYC, graffiti on the elevated subway.
  • The hoodlum at the supermarket buys spraypaint and then vandalizes the inside of the guy's house with it (and his name is Spraycan in the credits)
  • Bronson's first murder, in Riverside Park, graffiti everywhere (45 min)
  • Scenes inside the subway are still clean (53 min)
This is the first real appearance of graffiti in a movie in New York City, and it comes hard. The very premise of this movie is about the rampant crime that has grown in recent years and crept into every area of the city, and one man was so victimized that he became a vigilante and started straight shooting people. 

So this movie is about crime, about bad people doing bad things. And the aerosol spraycan makes an immediate appearance. Within the first twenty minutes, there's a scene where a bunch of hoodlums follow this guy into his apartment building, and one of them starts spray paining all over the inside of the building, and then all inside his apartment, a real sign of lawlessness. The guy's name in the credits is Spraycan.

But actual examples of graffiti are limited to Riverside Park, which is smacked. The cover of the movie poster shows Charles Bronson aiming his gun at someone, but right behind him is a wall tagged with black spray paint, the letters stylized in a way that says authentic, in-the-wild graffiti. Likely Riverside Park was already a party spot before the influx of DJ equipment following the '77 blackout.

Prisoner of 2nd Ave, 1975
  • Black and white block letters on a wall, "BIKE" (3 min)

Three Days of the Condor, 1975
  • Busted-ass proto-graffiti (22 min)

Marathon Man, 1976
  • Central Park (9 min and 44 min)
  • Scribble scrabble (1:18 min)

Next Stop Greenwich Village, 1976
  • Nothing.
Filmed in the then-Jewish neighborhood of Flatbush, or Brownsville, somewhere in between, and also Greenwich Village in Manhattan; you're not seeing any graffiti, not even on the subway (10 min)

Taxi Driver, 1976
Here, we are at an impasse. It was released in 1976 but filmed in the summer of 75 during a heat wave and a citywide garbage collectors strike. The way it was filmed, and the places it filmed, were supposed to show the dying gasp of a city on the verge of bankruptcy, which it was.

You might think a movie like this would have lots of graffiti, but no. In fact, there's no graffiti in the entire movie. Granted, it's really hard to see anything because so many scenes are him driving, so he's going too fast to see the walls, and you're looking through the windshield of his car so it's blurry, and it's like always raining so it's even more blurry, and also, he works nights, so it's always dark. Sorry to say, even if there were graffiti in the movie, it would be pretty hard to see. 

That being said, there still seems to be no graffiti anywhere, not at the 57th Street cab station, not even in the "bad" neighborhoods in Harlem with the hookers and the hoodlums, nowhere. There's some basic magic marker written in the hallway of the whorehouse (1:24 min). 

But alas, go search images for the film and you'll find all of them are shots of Robert De Niro in front a wall that's absolutely shattered, yet the movie itself has no graffiti in it. There's two different images that seem to reappear, and I've copied them below. 

So here's a movie, 1975-1976, where the movie itself shows no graffiti, but the marketing was certain to make the point very clear - graffiti is a thing, it's bad, and it's here.

Saturday Night Fever, 1977
  • Filmed almost entirely in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, and began in March of 77 and lasted 3 months (Vanity Fair article), so it was still before the "blackout"
  • The subway is trashed (1 min)
  • Brick wall (4 min)
  • Under the bridge, proto-graffiti (27 min)
  • Throwups at the "Barracuda" joint (48 min)
  • Brick wall, mix of proto- and early graffiti (1:17 min)
  • Barracuda's again (1:28 min)
  • Subways are rocked, inside and out, and even the stations too (1:50 min)
It's impossible to ignore now. Something tells me things were already heating up prior to filming in March 1977, and only months before the "blackout". Taxi Driver is filmed in the summer of 75 and we don't see any graffiti. So the entire year of 76 between these two movies seems like a good place to put the thumbtack on the map. Unfortunately, there's not enough good material from this exact time period. 

Superman, 1978
  • Doesn't count.
It's overproduced, too controlled, too sanitized; like if there was graffiti they would have paid to have it removed from the scene. And it's the only movie filmed in NYC from 1978.

The Warriors, 1979
  • The title has drips and the whole credits font is written as if it were from a spraycan (1 min)
  • Inside the subway and out, rocked (2 min)
  • Supposed to be the Bronx but it's actually Riverside Park, and, same as Death Wish, it's rocked (7min)
  • There's a scene in a cemetery, and either the whole thing is a stage or they put a fake tombstone in there, and it's spraypainted with a "W" on it for Warriors; all the other graffiti in there is bootie, I think it's fake (19 min)
  • So far every single scene in the movie has graffiti, some proto- some regular (20 min)
  • Sprays the guy in the face with a can of paint, like it's a weapon (1:15 min)
I suspect some scenes had the graf added on purpose, it's just so bad, and yet other scenes have really good stuff around, so it's hard to tell.

This is where I realize that movies have fake graffiti. I take for granted that I can tell the difference, but I think it's so obvious at times that anyone could tell.

Anyway, it's interesting to think about graffiti as a sign of lawlessness, crime, deteriorating social values, you name it. When a person making a movie wants to create a good, believable set for a movie about gritty city life, they either find a wall with graffiti on it, or they make the wall with graffiti on it. This brings me to the last movie, outside the 1970's decade, but added here just for their use of fake graffiti:

Escape from New York, 1981 
  • This one for good measure. 
  • At 1:20 you can see real good what fake graffiti looks like in a movie in 1981. The whole thing is simulacra by the way, since it's supposed to be NYC but it's really filmed in East St. Louis.
In 1971, if you wanted to make a movie set look gritty, you might turn over a garbage can, get some broken bottles on the sidwalk, let loose a couple rats, but you never thought to yourself, man what I really need is to get some tags scribbled on this stop sign. Graffiti simply didn't exist. Something that resembles graffiti has always existed, and everybody knows Pompei had it scribbled on the walls back in 79 AD. But it simply didn't mean the same thing as it does today.

When you to want to make your movie set look a little more hard core, you don't draw Kilroy on the payphone. It also didn't matter if you wrote TAKI 183 on the payphone because it didn't really look like graffiti yet, and it didn't mean then what it meant by 1977.

When it first appeared, at least through the lens of the movies filmed in NYC 1971-1979, it meant "crime"; it meant a city completely out of control. Nothing says "we have completely given up governing our society" like wild, undecipherable scribble on every visible surface. Since then, you absolutely cannot say the same thing without it.

They evaluated  humidity, altitude, temperature, precipitation and density of vegetation across 1,000 globally distributed languages, documented over 300 years. How were these environmental conditions affecting speech over time?

"The representation of a diversity of languages were scattered geographically over the widest possible range of global environments," Benedict said. "If we think about time scales of a century or more of habitual mask use in areas where diseases are common, or you know, air quality is such that it's a standard practice, I would expect to see changes in the way that we communicate with each other," Benedict said.

"There's some research on bird song which shows that with birds that live in both urban and rural settings, the birds that live in urban areas tend to pitch their songs a little higher to get above the background noise of cars and things like that," Maddieson said. "We know that some species do adapt to these relatively recent changes because the lifespan of a bird is much less than human lifeform."

Speech study finds classic Georgia accent fading fast

The analysis was carried out with recordings of white individuals native to Georgia, born from the late 19th century to the early 2000s. The researchers focused on the way the recorded speakers pronounced vowels. The team found that older Georgians pronounced the word "prize" as prahz and "face" as fuh-eece, but the youngest speakers use prah-eez and fayce. These are distinctive features of the traditional Southern drawl. (These are called dpithong by the way, when a one-syllable word seems to have two syllables.)

"Using transcribed audio, we can use a computer to estimate where you put your tongue in your mouth when you pronounce each vowel, which gives us a quantitative metric of accent.")

Researchers find languages can acquire new color concepts after exposure to other languages

Among members of the Tsimane' society, who live in a remote part of the Bolivian Amazon rainforest, the researchers found that those who had learned Spanish as a second language began to classify colors into more words, making color distinctions that are not commonly used by Tsimane' who are monolingual.

In the most striking finding, Tsimane' who were bilingual began using two different words to describe blue and green, which monolingual Tsimane' speakers do not typically do. And, instead of borrowing Spanish words for blue and green, they repurposed words from their own language to describe those colors. 

"It's a great example of one of the main benefits of learning a second language, which is that you open a different worldview and different concepts that then you can import to your native language."

Chips vs Crisps and the Evolution of Civilization


Roman roads laid the foundation for modern-day prosperity, study claims

See what they call "the reversal of fortune" - I call it chips vs crisps, like how England would much rather call their potato chips "chips" but they can't because they already call their french fries "chips". I have to copy mostly the whole writeup, just because:

Roman road networks were built not primarily for economic reasons, but to transport troops to different parts of the empire, but soon began to be used for trade and transport, becoming links between emerging market towns and important for economic development.

To carry out the study, the researchers superimposed maps of the Roman Empire's road network on top of modern satellite images showing the light intensity at night—one way of approximating economic activity in a geographical area. 

"What makes this study extra interesting is that the roads themselves have disappeared and that the chaos in Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire would have been an opportunity to reorient the economic structures. Despite that, the urban pattern remained."

Another factor that supports the study's findings is what happened in the eastern parts of the Roman Empire, in North Africa and the Middle East, where wheeled transport was basically abandoned in the 4th–6th centuries to be replaced with camel caravans. The roads in the region were used less and less and were allowed to fall into disrepair. Thus, in contrast to the western parts of the kingdom, new roads were not built on top of the old ones.

"The roads became irrelevant and thus we don't see the same continuity in prosperity at all. It can be said that the area was affected by what is called a 'reversal of fortune'—countries that early on developed civilization, such as Iraq, Iran and Turkey, are today autocratic and have significantly worse economic development than countries that were then in the economic periphery," says Ola Olsson.

"In Sweden, for example, we are talking about possibly building new railroad trunk lines. The former, from the 19th century, gained enormous importance for economic activity in Sweden. New stretches for the railroad are discussed, and if they are built you can expect some communities to get a big economic boost."

Is there a common sound of swearing across languages?

The initial study revealed that swear words were less likely to include approximants, which include sounds like l, r, w and y. (Not offensive enough.)

Minced Oaths though:
In a following study, the authors also looked at minced oaths—which are variations of swear words deemed less offensive, for example "darn" instead of "damn." The authors found that approximants were significantly more frequent in minced oaths than swear words. The authors propose that this introduction of approximants is part of what makes minced oaths less offensive than swear words.

Art x Science


AI art is moving fast and breaking things (sorry Getty Images Holdings). But the part that really blows my mind is that it makes a perfect composition, every single time.

The picture above was trained on billions of images. Some of them -- but certainly not all of them -- are actual artwork or at least professional commercially-designed imagery, and yet, after digesting basically every image on the internet, this is what comes out. 

It's perfect: balance, contrast, rhythm, movement, emphasis, pattern, unity; the seven principles of design, they're all there. 

If you mix every paint color together, you get brown. If you took a program that learned how to drive by watching all the cars out on the road, the result would be a car accident. Yet, when we digest every picture on the internet, this is what comes out. The prompt was "complementary color scheme of insect eyes", but that doesn't really matter. You could literally write "shitty amateur artist garbage" and it would produce an image that would win a local art contest.

Anyway, here's some insight into what our eyes want: 

Color composition preferences in art paintings are determined by color statistics

Color composition preferences of 31,353 participants, for 1,200 paintings with artificially manipulated color compositions where the hue angle was rotated by 90, 180, and 270 degrees.

Participants always preferred the original. But not for the reasons expected -- the "matching-to-nature" hypothesis.

Instead, these statistical color properties predicted preference: 
  • asymmetric red–green distribution
  • correlation between lightness and blue–yellow distribution
  • correlation between red–green and blue–yellow 

It was revealed for the first time that color compositions found in paintings do not simply imitate natural scenes, but have their own unique features, which is linked to preferences of observers and the attractiveness of certain color schemes.

Cyborg Team Convergence


Destiny of science modeled and explained in new study

Researchers modeled the evolution of convergence by analyzing millions of scientific works using machine learning etc. to identify several stages in the evolution of science, each characterized by a different form of convergence:
  1. Polymathic Convergence - early science to the Renaissance period, polymaths Aristotle and da Vinci, knowledge integration within the minds of singular scholars
  2. Disciplinary Divergence - theories developed within specific disciplines turned into generalized templates with broader applications, "convergence through divergence", Darwin's theory of evolution in biology
  3. Multi-Disciplinary Team Convergence - mid-20th century, experts from different disciplines work  together, knowledge integration takes place across teams of scientists with diverse expertise, the Manhattan Project.
  4. Polymathic Team Convergence - knowledge integration both within and across scholars, a mix of individual polymathic and multi-disciplinary team convergence, recent brain science research.
  5. Cyborg Team Convergence - polymathic scientists collaborate with artificial intelligence in mixed human-machine teams.
Note to Self: We are already at stage 5, because machine learning networks, although designed by scientists, are discovering things that we never knew, and sometimes things that we didn't even ask about, such as the Foodome project at Barabási Labs that discovered an unknown formula in the nutrient profiles of food, or the UC Berkeley crew that discovered a formula related to exoplanets hidden in the math of general relativity, or the DeepMind project that revealed a new theorem about knots (yes knots, trust me).

International collaboration reveals how the human brain evolved to harness abstract thought

"Surprisingly, our results showed that in all species other than humans, the brain areas that comprise the default mode network involve two systems not strongly connected with each other," Constantinidis said. "These regions, one responsible for suppression of external events and one for more cognitive tasks, appear to be linked only recently in evolution. It is this linkage that may have facilitated the capacity for abstract thought that led to the rapid evolution of human cognitive abilities."

Exploring how abstract concepts are represented in the brain across cultures, languages

"We wanted to look across languages to see if our cultural backgrounds influence how we understand, how we perceive abstract ideas like justice."

Brain scans from 20 participants, with equal representation from those who speak English and Mandarin. Participants were given 28 individual abstract concepts that spanned seven categories: social, emotion, metaphysics, law, religiosity, mathematics and scientific. While in the fMRI machine, participants would think about a prompt from one of these categories, like sacrilege in the religiosity category, for three seconds. Between each prompt, the participant would clear their mind by staring at a shrinking, blue ellipse for seven seconds. The series was repeated six times to provide multiple datasets for statistical analyses and to train and test models.

The study shows that a common neural infrastructure does exist between languages. While the underlying neural regions are similar, how the areas light up is more specific to each individual.

"Despite each culture developing its own somewhat differing conceptions of the world, all brains organize the abstract concepts the same way, using the same brain systems."

(Not sure if it's appropriate to apply it here, but remember that all brain studies of less than 1,000 people are subject to noisy data? This study has 20.)

Pickled fetus found inside ancient Egyptian mummy

A closer look at the mummy and her fetus showed that she did not die in childbirth. They also found the mummy had been preserved with natron, a type of salt found in dry lake beds. When used to mummify a corpse, it dries out the body and also works as a disinfectant, preventing bacteria from eating the remains. The fetus remained untouched by those who had mummified the remains, which kept the womb pristine.

Famine and disease drove the evolution of lactose tolerance in Europe

"Our study demonstrates how, in later prehistory, as populations and settlement sizes grew, human health would have been increasingly impacted by poor sanitation and increasing diarrheal diseases, especially those of animal origin. Under these conditions consuming milk would have resulted in increasing death rates, with individuals lacking lactase persistence being especially vulnerable. This situation would have been further exacerbated under famine conditions, when disease and malnutrition rates are increased. This would lead to individuals who did not carry a copy of the lactase persistence gene variant being more likely to die before or during their reproductive years, which would push the population prevalence of lactase persistence up.

Social cohesion found to be key risk factor in early COVID infections

Social cohesion, normally associated with positive outcomes in physical and mental health, can be a liability during a pandemic.

That's because social connections—which generally ensure access to support, information and resources—can also provide pathways to infection, especially for vulnerable individuals.

Cooperation among strangers has increased since the 1950s

  • 511 ab experiments measuring cooperation among strangers in the United States between 1956 and 2017 with 63,000 participants.
  • Found a small, gradual increase in cooperation across the 61-year period.
  • Increase in cooperation was associated with increases in urbanization, societal wealth, income inequality and the number of people living alone.
  • The study cannot prove those factors caused an increase in cooperation, only that there is a correlation.

The Origin of a Scientific Meme


Study traces the origins and diffusion of image memes online

Hard for me to be any more satisfied at this -- we are finally seeing some research done on memes. Granted, they're the neo-memes, as in "macro image series", or "funny pictures with text on the bottom", instead of the fundamentalist, classical definition of memes as in "Richard Dawkins selfish memes". Still, I'll take it. 

The question: Do they diffuse in marginal communities before going mainstream, or do they stem from intermediate networks that connect peripheral and mainstream communities?
  • First they identify online communities that post memes.
  • Then they used image recognition to track backwards.
  • They're also using something called "cloud vision API" to make sure it's fresh and not been sitting somewhere else on the internet.
Findings: Most image memes are first published on Reddit and then shared on other platforms.

My only problem here is that there is no attempt to discern whether the origin is from a regular person or a semibot (full robot, half robot half human, human with ill intent or disingenuous intent, etc.)

'We conclude' or 'I believe?' Study finds rationality declined decades ago

Analyzing language from millions of books, the researchers found that words associated with reasoning, such as "determine" and "conclusion," rose systematically beginning in 1850, while words related to human experience such as "feel" and "believe" declined. This pattern has reversed over the past 40 years, paralleled by a shift from a collectivistic to an individualistic focus as reflected by the ratio of singular to plural pronouns such as "I"/"we."

I wonder if this is about raising all boats, instead of limiting the mediasphere to be made only by those with access to education?

How to 'detox' potentially offensive language from an AI

In their search for latent, inner properties of these language models, they found a dimension that seemed to correspond to a gradation from good actions to bad actions.

The researchers wanted to find out which actions participants rated as good or bad behavior in the deontological sense, more specifically whether they rated a verb more positively (Do's) or negatively (Don'ts). An important question was what role contextual information played. After all, killing time is not the same as killing someone.

[Using the BERT language model] "We found that the moral views inherent in the language model largely coincide with those of the study participants," says Schramowski. This means that a language model contains a moral world view when it is trained with large amounts of text.

The researchers then developed an approach to make sense of the moral dimension contained in the language model: You can use it not only to evaluate a sentence as a positive or negative action. The latent dimension discovered means that verbs in texts can now also be substituted in such a way that a given sentence becomes less offensive or discriminatory [less toxic]. This can also be done gradually.

Researchers develop a method to keep bots from using toxic language

Tay, a Twitter chatbot unveiled by Microsoft in March 2016. In less than 24 hours, Tay, which was learning from conversations happening on Twitter, started repeating some of the most offensive utterances tweeted at the bot, including racist and misogynist statements.

Certain groups of people are overrepresented in the training set and the bot learns language representative of that group only.

Computer scientists first fed toxic prompts to a pre-trained language model to get it to generate toxic content. Researchers then trained the model to predict the likelihood that content would be toxic. They call this their "evil model." They then trained a "good model," which was taught to avoid all the content highly ranked by the "evil model."

Algorithmic de-biasing

However, this language model still has shortcomings. For example, the bot now shies away from discussions of under-represented groups, because the topic is often associated with hate speech and toxic content. Researchers plan to focus on this problem in future work.

Bot can spot depressed Twitter users in 9 out of 10 cases

88.39%* accuracy, by extracting and analyzing 38 data points (use of positive and negative words, number of friends and followers, use of emojis) from 1,000 users' public Twitter profile, including the content of their posts, their posting times, the other users in their social circle, and information about the users' mental health.
It sounds a lot less impressive to know that the bot already had the users mental health data; they weren't using just words by themselves, and so you can't just run this on Twitter and expect results, not without having the health data of all the users.
