Edward Bernays


I've always wanted to read Bernays. I first heard of him on WBAI 99.5FM, a public radio station in New York City and under Pacifica, during their fundraiser, where they would play a documentary about the mass manipulation of populations, and offer to give it to you for free if you donated some money to the station. At that time, Bernays sounded like the most diabolical person ever. Today, we're in an age of digital mass manipulation, with non-human algorithms and predatory platforms, and so I thought maybe it's time I read the Bernays, from the source, and so I did. 

Now I realize that he was not a diabolical mastermind who manipulated every person on the planet for greed and power. He was trying to help the people talk to their government and to their corporate overlords. Granted, he did work for entities like Phillip Morris, and granted, audacious plots like the Carbon Footprint propagandized by British Petroleum were crafted in his spirit. And then there's the quote from the back of the book jacket of his second book Propaganda (copied below), which is nothing short of the most ominous and conspiratorial provocation ever. But in his own books, he's saying he does all this because he wants to see people understand each other. He doesn't only want the business he works for to make more money, he wants the customers they serve to be more satisfied at the same time. He doesn't just want a government to come up with some new laws, he wants those laws to actually be just what the people need, no more and no less. "The goal of all public relations is good will" (Public Relations, Bernays, 1952, p5). 

Maybe there's another piece to all this, some criticism written 20 years after he dies, that shows how I was so easily misled, and how he was in fact the sinister mental criminal the WBAI documentary presented him as. Maybe; but I'm not there yet. So for now, here it is.

Crystallizing Public Opinion

This is his first book.

Something about "the danger of interference by the public in the conduct of the industry"; but his tone overall is one of cooperation, consideration, conscientiousness, etc., and for the public good just as much as the interests of industry, government, etc. p21

On Paul Revere vs Longfellow, and Perception vs Reality - based on a story in a "New York newspaper", about public relations (which was a new concept at the time by the way). Two other people rode with Paul Revere that night. "There were three waiting to see the signal hung in the tower of the Old North Church. Everyone of them mounted and spurred just as Mr. Longfellow described Paul Revere. They all got the signal. They all rode and waked the farmers, spreading the warning. Afterward, one of them was an officer in Washington's army, another became governor of one of the States. Not one in twenty thousand Americans ever heard the names of the other two, and there is hardly a person in America who does not know all about Revere. Did Revere make history or did Longfellow?" p22-23

On Influencing Public Opinion - or even on correcting misinformation, as the advice sounds very familiar. "It is seldom effective to call names or to attempt to discredit the beliefs themselves. The council on public relations, after examination of the sources of established beliefs, must either discredit the old authorities or create new authorities by making articulate a mass opinion against the old belief or in favor of a new one." And because he says the beliefs of individuals come from authorities, like the President of the United States, the president of the local school board, or the director of a finance committee; authorities are where the belief comes from, and people have allegiance to them; the allegiance is to other people, not to ideas or beliefs, but it appears as allegiance to belief. And therefore, you can't discredit the belief but the authority where it comes from. p30

In a chapter titled "The Interaction of Public Opinion with the Forces That Help Make It", he talks about the back-and-forth of the public opinion and public will on other systems, which then influence them back, etc., and he says, "Give the people what they want" is only half sound. What they want and what they get are fused by some mysterious alchemy. The press, the lecturer, the screen and the public lead and are led by each other." p38

He mentions often "the crowd" and "crowd-mind" and Everett Dean Martin's the Behavior of Crowds.

He refers to Instincts of Herd by Trotter to explain the behaviors of the group vs the individual.

On Dull News Days - he is referencing an article by the editors of the New York Tribune, April 19, 1922, "What Else Happened That Day", which is about the news on the day Austria declared war on Serbia, and which started World War One. First Bernays says when there is no big news, real editing is needed to select the real news from the semi-news. Then he says, "What you read on dull news days is what fixes your opinion of your country and of your compatriots. It is from the non-sensational news that you see the world and assess, rightly or wrongly, the true value of persons and events." And so Bernays is saying it is in this way, small yet unending, that our ideas are shaped. Not the big, single incidents; the ones you notice. It's the million little things, and so small you don't notice. Little by little you build your ideas, your beliefs. p51

Here citing Lippmann's "Public Opinion", there are 3 ways to "obtain cohesive force" of the public:
1. Patronage and Pork - a member of one community will promise reciprocal support to the member from another community
2. Government by Terror and Obedience - [no explanation is given]
3. Governments based on such highly developed systems of information, analysis and self-consciousness that the 'knowledge of national circumstances and reasons of state' is evident to all men. ... [T]he degree to which the material for a common consciousness exists determines how far cooperation will depend upon force, or upon the milder alternative to force, which is patronage and privilege. p56-57

On the Interlapping Group Formations in Society - let us examine for a moment the personnel of the Horseshoe at the Metropolitan Opera House. It is comprised of people who are rich, but this economic classification is only one, for the men and women who assemble there are presumably music lovers. But also ... art lovers ... sportsmen ... merchants and bankers ... philosophers ... motorists and amateur farmers. p63

And a silk firm trying to reach the public, targets women, propagandizing silk as fashion, as art, as the natural history of the silk worm ... p64

Citing Martin's "The Behavior of Crowds", "a debate will draw a larger crowd than a lecture." p68

The first picture I wanted to use seemed very obviously artificially generated, so I chose this one instead. I didn't look at the words printed at the bottom, until I did, and then I decided to just leave it for everyone to see. This is how hard it's become to find an actual original photo from that day.

Propaganda

This is his second book.

On the back jacket, "Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country." This sounds so ominous and conspiratorial, but not how he seemed to portray it? And so I might have to argue that even Bernays himself is saying that true power is part of the iterative creative force of a population acting on its governing bodies which then act back on the population which then act in response back on the governing bodies, ad infinitum; and so nobody rules anything, nobody ultimate controls anything.

His first book seems to be making the case for a public opinion expert, or public relations expert. Here, he's making the case for propaganda, which is the instrument of the public relations expert. 

The New Propagandists, a list: The President of the United States and the members of his Cabinet; the Senators and Representatives in Congress; the Governors of our forty-eight states; the presidents of the chambers of commerce in our hundred largest cities, the chairmen of the boards of directors of our hundred or more largest industrial corporations, the presidents of many of the labor unions affiliated in the American Federation of Labor, the national president of each of the national professional and fraternal organizations, the president of each of the racial or language societies in the country, the hundred leading newspaper and magazine editors, the fifty most popular authors, the presidents of the fifty leading charitable organizations, the twenty leading theatrical or cinema producers, the hundred recognized leaders of fashion, the most popular and influential clergymen in the hundred leadings cities, the presidents of our colleges and universities and the foremost members of their faculties, the most powerful financiers in Wall Street, the most noted amateurs of sport, and so on. p12

"Invisible government" and "mass psychology" - these are some mid-20th c. and early 21st c. buzzwords; were they buzzwords in 1920 when he wrote this?

He talks about the new industrial economy and says the new business is not to make more stuff, because we got that with the industrial revolution, "To make customers is the new problem" and his greater context here is inter-industry and inter-commodity competition. p30

Ultimately he seems to see it as a cooperation, and a "bringing order from chaos"

He also says beliefs you agree with are education, and beliefs you disagree with are propaganda, but that propaganda is its own thing, and a good propagandist can use it to influence public opinion to the benefit of both.

This is his last book. Much of it is taken from previously published material, either his own earlier books, or news, journals, etc., articles written by him and others. I get somewhat of a feeling that he's being defensive of propaganda; this is written in 1952, where the whole world knows what it means, and what it can do. At his first book, circa 1920, the world, and the concept of 'propaganda' were both much different. 

"The goal of all public relations is good will" p5 

On Publicity vs Public Relations - "Publicity is a one-way street; public relations, a two-way street. The modern public relations man owes his being to the destruction of the laissez-faire in the early twentieth century; he owes it to the muckrakers of the period, the Square Deal, the New Freedom, and the New Deal." p5

Propaganda - "The term 'propaganda' was introduced when Pope Gregory XIII established a Committee for the Propagation of the Faith to found seminars and print catechisms and other religious works in foreign countries. Subsequently, Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) founded the College of Propaganda to educate priests. In 1650 Pope Clement VII instituted the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith to spread Catholicism the world over." p20

Public Opinion - the phrase is first used in the Enlightenment, which is after revolutions gave rights to public speech, freedom of presses, etc., and all as a result of literacy in the population. ... Rousseau's term volonte generale, or the "general will", and the German Volksgeist, or "spirit of the people", and Jeremy Bentham's "tribunal of public opinion" p22

"What is truly vicious is not propaganda but a monopoly of it." p24


PT Barnum would write letters to the editor of a newspaper, under pseudonyms, and both for and against PT Barnum. (This sounds like the Black Lives Matter movement circa 2018, and follows Bernays earlier advice that 'a debate is better than a lecture'; recall there were protests on both sides of the issue held at the same place and same time and started by the same organization but masquerading as two opposing organizations.) p38

During the period 1800-1865, slavery was the primary topic; he lists all the ways literature, magazines, etc. influenced public opinion, and that is where we see the first real reference to 'public relations', used by a rector in New York City, 1842 p46

Publicity vs Public Relations - it was called publicity, but in 1908, AT&T head used the word in the heading of the annual report. p70

Freud was the uncle of Bernays.

The Committee on Public Information of WWI (imagine that)

[Relevant in Post-COVID 2025] Following the Great Depression, "Corporations and leaders had lost prestige simultaneously. From a market standpoint, the public was keenly sensitive, because of its feeling of insecurity, to everything about a corporation that it did not understand. ... sales of products fell off for the most improbably and unlikely reasons: false rumors, ... No possible subject that could be a matter of disagreement between groups of the public was too trivial to cause a wave of public disapproval or a falling off in buying. p92

The Institute for Propaganda Analysis, started by the Boston merchant Edward A. Filene, 1937, and published Propaganda Analysis, a monthly newsletter "to help intelligent citizens detect and analyze propaganda"

Classifications: 
  • the name-calling device
  • glittering generalities
  • transfer in terms of approved symbols and sanctions
  • testimonial
  • plain folks' device
  • card-stacking
  • bandwagon

A major distinction he makes is the one-way vs two-way streets; the one-way approach to public relations is what most people call sales. p122

The genius of radon watches - they were indispensable to soldiers on the front lines because they couldn't use lights to see their watches, so the radon watch was put on soldiers, and the soldiers were sold to the people, at a time when watches were still considered feminine. p129-130

"Engineering of Consent" is a chapter title, and pretty ominous sounding if you ask me.

He recommends all Public Relations Councils have a library of people and organizations, like the directory of newspapers, or the Congressional Directory...p162

He lists some of his processes
  • Research - survey people, write them letters
  • Appeal to Desire - aka "psychological raw materials", self preservation, ambition, pride, hunger, love of family and children, patriotism, imitativeness, the desire to be a leader, love of play
  • Symbols - Horses are the symbol for both Marlboro and Budweiser (jesus yes they are)
  • Do not think of tactics in segmented approaches; the problem is not to get articles into a newspaper or radio time or arrange for a motion-picture newsreel; it is rather to set in motion a broad activity, the success of which depends on interlocking all phases and elements of the proposed strategy, implemented by tactics that are tuned to the moment of maximum effectiveness
  • "He must prepare copy written in simple language and sixteen-word sentences" p167

He recommends each business make notes on all things public about the business, government legislation, even newspaper clippings to see how they are viewed by the public 
"House Organs" - in-house company magazines ... don't mention strikes or labor issues in general, despite being of utmost interest to the readership (employees) p210
[But this is my opinion, it just occurs immediately when reading this] A business producing a "house organ" that continually educates its employees on its business, its economics, its hiring practices, seems it would have no choice over time but to accumulate bias, until it's no longer trusted, and thus can no longer serve its purpose of educating employees (because they don't trust it to read it). A separate entity would have to publish it, yet paid for by the company, and no company would do that on its own, at least not without being required by law?

The Friend Network


Targeting friends to induce social contagion can benefit the world, says new research

The study evaluated a strategy that exploits the so-called "friendship paradox" of human social networks. That theory suggests that on average, your friends have more friends than you do. As the theory goes, the individuals nominated as friends potentially wield more social influence than those who identify them.

For the study, the researchers utilized the friendship paradox in the delivery of a proven 22-month education package promoting maternal, child, and neonatal health in 176 isolated villages in Honduras.

The researchers found that delivering the intervention to a smaller fraction of households in each village via the friendship targeting strategy led to the same level of behavioral adoption as would have been achieved by treating all the households.

People were either selected randomly within each village to receive the intervention or they were randomly chosen to nominate their friends, who were subsequently picked at random. 

"We found that targeting people's friends for an intervention induced significant social contagion, creating cascades of beneficial health practices to people who didn't receive the intervention." 

For many outcomes, using the friendship-nomination targeting method to reach 20% of households in a village affected outcomes the same as administering the intervention to every household.

Yes, Facebook knows this very well.

Study shows relatively low number of superspreaders responsible for large portion of misinformation on Twitter

10 months of data; 2,397,388 tweets; 448,103 users; parsed by low-credibility information status.

A third of the low-credibility tweets had been posted by people using just 10 accounts, and just 1,000 accounts were responsible for posting approximately 70% of such tweets.

I'll Harvest You and You'll Like It


Let's start with an opinion piece from the MIT Tech Review, just to get ourselves acquainted with the word "User" and the world we now live in:

A user is also, of course, someone who struggles with addiction. To be an addict is - at least partl - to live in a state of powerlessness. Today, power users - title originally bestowed upon people who had mastered skills like keyboard shortcuts and web design - aren’t measured by their technical prowess. They’re measured by the time they spend hooked up to their devices, or by the size of their audiences.  

As early as 2008, Norman [Don Norman, user experience legend] alighted on this shortcoming and began advocating for replacing “user” with “person” or “human” when designing for people. (The subsequent years have seen an explosion of bots, which has made the issue that much more complicated.) “Psychologists depersonalize the people they study by calling them ‘subjects.’ We depersonalize the people we study by calling them ‘users.’ Both terms are derogatory,” he wrote then. “If we are designing for people, why not call them that?”

What were once called AI bots have been assigned lofty titles like “copilot” and “assistant” and “collaborator” to convey a sense of partnership instead of a sense of automation. Large language models have been quick to ditch words like “bot” altogether.



And now let's go back to December 2023, to remember that kids have to be called users, because if we called them people, we might have to admit that they're not full-fledged, legitimate, 18-year-old, registered-to-vote, licensed-to-drive, eligible-for-military-service people perfectly capable of making decisions on procreation etc. Kids are the best users - they have no lawyers, and they have no prefrontal cortex, and that's what we like:

Signs You May Have a Problem

Wait a second - are we really coming up with substance abuse treatments for cell phone usage? Like as if it was nicotine or heroin? If the healthier way to "use" a phone involves an override program that literally makes it more difficult to use, then I think we have a problem here.

Once the user's designated screen limit has been reached, InteractOut can delay the phone's response to a user's gesture, shift where tapping motions are registered or slow the screen scrolling speed.

The strength of the delays and shifts continues to increase each time the user touches the phone, up to a pre-set maximum, and the user can decide how the app interferes with their phone use. The app's gradual interference allows users to continue using their phone, but with a little extra difficulty.

"If we just continuously add a little bit of friction to the interaction with the phone, eventually the user becomes more aware of what they are doing because there's a mismatch between what they expect to happen and what actually happens. That makes using smartphones a more deliberate process."

Companies may still buy consumer genetic information despite its modest predictive power

At-home DNA tests have provided millions with insights into their family history and health risk by simply spitting in a tube. Genetic risk screening of embryos at in vitro fertilization clinics is now available. These tests rely on polygenic scores—a tally of variations in human genes that influence a certain trait. However, while powerful at predicting traits in large populations, these scores are rather weak at an individual level.

"Firms operate under a lot of uncertainty and any little bit of information that they have about you is worthwhile."

Using an economic model, the researchers found that companies might be willing to pay because the information may raise profit and is relatively cheap.

The researchers argue that current laws and policies are inadequate to address the ethical, privacy, and legal concerns surrounding the potential corporate use of polygenic scores. While the US Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act prohibits discrimination in health coverage and employment based on genetic information, there are loopholes. The act only covers health insurance, excluding long-term, disability, life, and other insurances. It also doesn't apply to employers with fewer than 15 people, which accounts for 85% of US companies.

Discrepancies at the dispensaries: Study finds THC potency much lower than labeled

There's a theme here that you can't trust the commercial sector it's basically the exact opposite of science and the pursuit of knowledge.

Also can we give these guys an award for the best title: Uncomfortably High

Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Mile High Lab techs tested 23 samples (1–2 grams per sample) representing 12 strains purchased from 10 Colorado dispensaries. Strains were chosen to represent a diversity of reported THC % by dry weight from 12.8% to 33.0%.

It was unclear to researchers if the single values printed on packaging were an average of multiple tests or the result of a single test.

The average observed THC potency was 23.1% lower than the lowest label reported values and 35.6% lower than the highest label reported values. Overall, ~70% of the samples were more than 15% lower than the THC potency numbers reported on the label, with three samples having only half of the reported maximum THC potency. 13 of 23 tested samples had observed values that were more than 30% lower than the lowest reported value.

As the legal cannabis market continues to grow, it is essential that the industry moves toward selling products with more accurate labeling or risk losing trust in the industry as a whole.

Testing of smartphone apps that identify plants shows most are not very good

Most smartphone apps that identify plants are inaccurate. All of the apps are based on deep-learning technology and have been trained using images posted on the internet.

This, they further note, leads to errors because so many images of plants on the internet are mislabeled. (emphasized for those AI fans out there who forget that humans are and will always be the weakest link; and we are the ones who label.)

  • large differences in accuracy between the apps and variation across species
  • most of the apps did better when asked to identify plants by their flowers than by their leaves
  • none had an accuracy above 90%
  • some scored as low as 4% on some tasks
  • none of the apps are good enough to use as a field guide for people foraging for food in the wild
  • nor are they good enough for use by environmentalists or farmers to determine which plants to protect and which to eradicate
  • they can be used by hobbyists hoping to learn more about their local environment

The Laws of Metaphysics Strikes Again:
Accountants' tricks can help identify cheating scientists, says new study

You cannot escape Benford's Law, or any of the Laws Metaphysical (not until you get yourself a quantum random number generator to clean up your fake data).

The trick behind these tools is that it is actually harder than you might imagine to fabricate essentially random numbers, like the last digit in everyone's bank balances. Financial auditors have known this for a long time and have a variety of tools for looking at lists of numbers and highlighting ones that seem odd (and thus requiring investigation for fraud).

Retractions of scientific papers neared 5,000 globally in 2022 according to Retraction Watch, amounting to almost 0.1% of published articles:

Post Post Script:
Part of the problem, he says, stems from publication bias: "There are virtually no incentives for publishing papers that provide confirmation or refutation of previous studies." This emphasis placed on exciting results, which ultimately affects the success of scientists' careers, may be a key factor to consider in future reforms.

Fewer than half of new drugs add substantial therapeutic value over existing treatments

They used publicly available data to identify 124 first and 335 supplemental indications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and 88 first and 215 supplemental indications approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) between January 2011 and December 2020.

Among FDA-approved indications with available ratings, 41% (44 of 107) had high therapeutic value ratings for first, compared with 34% (61 of 179) for supplemental indications. In Europe, 47% (41 of 87) of first and 36% (67 of 184) of supplemental indications had high therapeutic value ratings.

Among FDA approvals, when the sample was restricted to the first three approved indications, second indication approvals were 36% less likely to have a high value rating and third indication approvals were 45% less likely when compared to the first indication approval. Similar findings were observed for Europe.

Researchers find 89% of sports supplement labels false, ingredients fraudulent and some laced with illegal drugs

  • Sports supplements, not just any supplements
  • Supplement manufacturing (all of it) is not monitored.
  • US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists them as a food subcategory, but synthetic drugs being slipped into supplements are not food or botanical ingredients—they are unapproved pharmaceutical drugs (words from the article not mine).
  • The U.S. Department of Justice has previously charged individuals with conspiracy to defraud consumers and the FDA by selling products labeled as dietary supplements that contained unapproved drugs.
  • Finding unlabeled and unapproved drugs in supplements is equivalent to experimenting on humans without their knowledge. Most concerning is the product found to contain four different drug compounds. While none of these drugs are well tested on humans, a cocktail of multiple combined banned substances has never been tested in any scenario.
They analyzed the ingredients in a selection of sports supplements purchased online with liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry:
  • 89% inaccurately labeled
  • 12% included unlabeled banned drug substances
  • 57 products contained one of five popular supplements, R vomitoria (n=13), methylliberine (n=21), turkesterone (n=8), halostachine (n=7) and octopamine (n=8).
Vomitoria though?
  • 23 products (40%) did not contain a detectable amount of the labeled ingredient
  • Of the 34 products that contained detectable amounts of the listed ingredient, the actual quantity ranged from 0.02% to 334% of the labeled quantity (***so even when you do list it, it's so far off that it doesn't matter***)
  • 6 products (11%) contained an ingredient quantity within 10% of the label
  • 7 products (12%) were found to contain at least one FDA-prohibited ingredient
  • 5 different FDA-prohibited compounds were found, including four synthetic simulants, 1,4-dimethylamylamine (DMAA), deterenol, octodrine (DMHA), oxilofrine and omberacetam
  • 6 products contained one of these prohibited ingredients, and one contained a combination of four prohibited ingredients: 1,4 Dimethylhexylamine, or 1,4-DMAA, analog of 1,3-DMAA, Deterenol (Betaphrine), Octodrine, Oxilofrine, Omberacetam (seem like mostly stimulants, hypertension, not approved for use in humans)

Study shows how the meat and dairy sector resists competition from alternative animal products

Researchers compared government spending of major agricultural policies and lobbying trends from 2014 to 2020 that supported either the animal food product system or alternative technologies, and compared government spending on both systems. 

In the U.S., about 800 times more public funding and 190 times more lobbying money goes to animal-source food products than alternatives. In the EU, about 1,200 times more public funding and three times more lobbying money goes to animal-source food products. In both regions, nearly all plant-based meat patents were published by a small number of private companies or individuals, with just one U.S. company, Impossible Foods, owning half of the patents.

Similarly, a proposed amendment to the U.S. Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act would prohibit the sale of alternative meats unless the product label included the word "imitation" and other clarifying statements indicating the non-animal origin.

Android phones sold to customers in China found to be loaded with apps that send user data to third parties

Riddled with software that continuously sends user data to third parties without the permission or even knowledge of the phone's users.

The research team found that the phones were rife with applications sending user data to a variety of third parties, all without permission. During testing, they set phones to opt out of sending any sort of data to providers or any other third parties, and did not connect to cloud applications. Still, applications sent data to the makers of the phone, network operators and also to the makers of apps. Data included physical information such as the user's phone number, its MAC address and ongoing geolocation data. It also included more personal data, such as contact lists and text metadata.

Smartphone study reveals that bodily rhythm affects behavior

"If people think they just live their lives, deciding their behavior for themselves, and that there is no overarching structure, they've got it wrong," says researcher Arko Ghosh.

  • these cycles influence how we behave

Wearable devices may be able to capture well-being through effortless data collection using AI

"Passive data collection" sounds so benign. 
The findings support wearable devices as a way to monitor and assess psychological states remotely without requiring the completion of mental health questionnaires.
This would sound like the most dystopian thing ever if it weren't coming from a hospital:
"Wearables provide a means to continually collect information about an individual's physical state. Our results provide insight into the feasibility of assessing psychological characteristics from this passively collected data."

The data: 
They the Warrior Watch Study, a digital observational study of 329 health care workers enrolled at seven hospitals in New York City, measuring heart rate variability and resting heart rate throughout the follow-up period using a smart watch. The metrics collected were found to be predictive in identifying resilience or well-being states.

The way people type and use their computer mouse can be better stress indicators than their heart rate.

"People who are stressed move the mouse pointer more often and less precisely and cover longer distances on the screen," Nagelin said.

People who feel stressed in the office make more mistakes when typing and tend to write in fits and starts, with many brief pauses.

Until now scientists haven't been able to define what normal rhythmicity looks like in healthy daily life. ... The device is worn around the waist and painlessly and automatically samples from beneath the skin every 20 minutes, without the need to collect blood. Importantly, the method allows sampling during sleep, work, and other daily life activities for up to 72 hours in a single session. Mathematicians then used these data to develop a new class of dynamic markers to better understand how a healthy hormonal profile should look like depending on an individual's sex, age, body mass index, as well as other characteristics.

Attackers can break voice authentication with up to 99% success within six tries

Hackers can steal cryptographic keys by video-recording power LEDs 60 feet away

Side channels -- a class of attack that measures physical effects that leak from a device as it performs a cryptographic operation, like using cameras in iPhones or commercial surveillance systems to video record power LEDs that show when the card reader or smartphone is turned on.
By carefully monitoring characteristics such as power consumption, sound, electromagnetic emissions, or the amount of time it takes for an operation to occur, attackers can assemble enough information to recover secret keys that underpin the security and confidentiality of a cryptographic algorithm.

Computer security experts offer advice to freeze out risk of thermal attacks

Sometimes you just need to be reminded that this is a thing --
Thermal attacks use heat-sensitive cameras to read the traces of fingerprints left on surfaces like smartphone screens, computer keyboards and PIN pads.

Hackers can use the relative intensity of heat traces across recently-touched surfaces to reconstruct users' passwords. [follow the above link to see the heat map video]

The team identified 15 different approaches described in previous papers on computer security which could reduce the risk of thermal attacks:
  • wearing gloves or rubber thimbles
  • touching something cold before typing
  • pressing hands against surfaces or breathing on them
  • a heating element behind surfaces could erase traces of finger heat
  • surfaces could be made from materials which dissipate heat more rapidly
  • a physical shield which covers keys until heat has dissipated
  • eye-tracking inputs or biometric security could reduce risk of thermal attack
  • manufacturers of thermal cameras could integrate software to prevent thermal cameras from taking pictures of surfaces like PIN pads on bank machines.

AI and 10 seconds of voice can screen for diabetes, new study reveals

Scientists used six to 10 seconds of people's voice, along with basic health data, including age, sex, height, and weight, to create an AI model that can distinguish whether that individual has type 2 diabetes. The model has 89% accuracy for women and 86% for men. 267 people (diagnosed as either non- or type 2 diabetic) to record a phrase into their smartphone six times daily for two weeks. From more than 18,000 recordings, scientists analyzed 14 acoustic features for differences between non-diabetic and type 2 diabetic individuals.

Your smart speaker data is used in ways you might not expect

It's so important to note that "we all knew this was a thing" like 10 years ago when they first came out, and yet, not until today do we have a legit university study, publicly funded, rigorously tested study, to prove what "we already knew", and even government agencies are only now paying attention. It takes years for this to happen:
The research team built an auditing framework to measure the collection, usage and sharing of Amazon Echo interaction data by creating several personas with interests in specific categories, and one control persona, and whereby each persona interacted with a different Echo device.

Then the researchers measured data collection by intercepting network traffic and inferred data usage by observing ads targeted to each persona on the web and on Echo devices.

The team reported that as many as 41 advertisers sync or share their cookies with Amazon, and then those advertisers further sync their cookies with 247 other third parties, including advertising services.

A robot that can detect subtle noises in its surroundings and use them to localize nearby humans

"Our group has recently been interested in exploring a high-level theme of research regarding what types of 'hidden' information are freely available that we can train models on. ... We wanted to see if the subtle and incidental sounds that humans inadvertently produce as they move can be that 'free' signal." 

The Robot Kidnapper Dataset: 14 hours of high-quality four-channel audio recordings paired with 360 RGB camera footage, collected during experimental trials where people were asked to move around a robot at various levels of 'sneakiness' (e.g., walking quietly, walking normally, etc.).

The researchers trained their model to ignore external and irrelevant noises, such as those originating from heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as sounds produced by the robot itself. 

"Robots commonly use cameras or lidar to navigate around people, but should those sensors fail or become unavailable (low-lit environments, occlusions, etc.), our method allows robots to fall back solely onto audio, which is usually already available in most hardware setups. Moreover, when interacting with robots, people should not be expected to intentionally create extra sounds, which is what previous works rely on."

Post Script: I am (only slightly) disturbed by the choice here in calling this the "un-kidnappable robot" which implies that, in the course of their study, they were trying to "kidnap" it. Isn't there another word for kidnap that doesn't have "kid" in it? (The Un-Abductable Robot?)


Five big carmakers beat lawsuits alleging infotainment systems invade privacy

The class-action "complaint alleges that the vehicle's system downloads all text messages and call logs from Plaintiffs' cellphones as soon as they are connected," the Ford ruling said. "The complaint also alleges that the infotainment system permanently stores the private communications without Plaintiffs' knowledge or consent." The complaint's allegations refer to Ford cars made in 2014 and after.

Plaintiffs alleged that there is no way to delete the text messages and call logs from the car system. "If text messages or call logs are deleted from a cellphone, the vehicle nevertheless retains the communications on the vehicle's on-board memory, even after the cellphone is disconnected. Vehicle owners cannot access or delete their personal information once it has been stored," the ruling's summary of the complaint said.

Why on Earth would you ever be able to access your own personal information that has been saved on this product which you purchased and thus ostensibly own? 

Because you don't own it. You don't own the product and you don't own your personal data. The Davos 2016 premonition -- it already happened -- You own nothing, and you like it. 


Study warns restrictions to application programming interfaces by social media platforms threaten research

Data is so valuable.
"Numerous social media platforms made substantial changes to their APIs -- drastically reducing access or increasing charges for access, which the researchers say will in many cases make research harder."

What research?
"The changes are adversely affecting academics who want to study the impact of social media on mental health, on misinformation, political views and so on."

In order for social media platforms to make money, in fact the only way they can possibly make any money at all, is by selling the intimate personal data about its own users. (Something that might be referred to as predatory in other contexts.)

It's like a cross between a digital Skinner Box and a roach motel where every person that touches it has their unspeakably minute, mostly invisible, and definitely private behavioral attributes catalogued, collated, and consigned to the greater data market where it will be used to fuel the consumer economy, where we stopped selling actual products to people a long time ago.

Now we just sell them ideas; actually, first we steal those ideas directly from the people themselves, via things like social media platforms, and then sell them right back, in a quasi-material form, where the actual physical part is mostly shitty made-in-China garbage, but the important part, which is the picture of you using said shitty product, quasi-physical since it's just a picture, has been acquired and used to manipulate another person into buying said product, and the circle of consumption complete.

User Interface Takes the Back Seat


This is a picture of a Norman Door, which means a door that was designed without a user in mind. It comes from the world of industrial design or user design, but slips into semiotics quite easily.

Funny, you might think, that a thing would be designed without a user in mind, since all things are designed for the purpose of being used (talking industrial design here, but this extends to all user interface designs, like websites, or even the control panel of an Apache helicopter).

But there are tons of things we interact with today that were absolutely not designed with us in mind. In fact, you might even say they weren't designed at all, unless you like to give agency to a conglomeration of dozens of interests, angles and entities crossing out each other's ideas until settling on the least messed up version of a thing that still checks all the boxes of all the people...except for the one box that says "good user interface design".

I remember hearing from an old family friend who worked at one of the Bell Labs in the 1980's about how they had people come to teach them about user interface, although he didn't call it that. He recalls learning for the first time why telephones were shaped the way they were, or even that they were shaped that way on purpose at all.

That was the era when we had cognitive psychologist George Miller pushing the 3-4 chunking as the best way to write phone numbers, because we remember things best in groups of 3-4, and why phone numbers on billboards in England look like a mess to the American brain.

Today, we could care less about the user. The user is a consumer; we don't use things, we only purchase them. What we do after they've been purchased, well, the manufacturer-designer could care less about that part. The way a product's user interface is designed is less about easing the user's experience than it is about manipulating the consumer's behavior via shiny surfaces and new colors. (Or via the intentionally unintelligible math that's posted on the post-pandemic phenomenon of Mega-sized toilet paper, which has completely supplanted standard-sized toilet paper, yet not only has less sheets for more money but is bigger than both the average hand and the average toilet paper roll holder.) 

Scott Comfort Plus Mega Toilet Paper - Notice the intentionally unintelligible math used to stimulate the risk-reward part of your brain, with the adverse effect that you get excited enough by the idea that you're about to win, that you shut off the actual math part of your brain. For example, how are you measuring the "rolls" here -- by weight, by sheet, or by square footage? Because something makes me suspicious that the textured paper makes them look bigger than they are. And is there a national standard for the metrics of a "standard" roll of toilet paper? Because what if they just change the standard size, and compare the new mega rolls to a new standard size they just made up, comparing apples to oranges. The math is unintelligible, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, since apparently we just want to play games with our brain while we shop, just ask JCPenny.

Sometimes we get good news on the user interface front, or at least some good scientific inquiry. Good news would be hearing about car designers actually integrating these findings into their work.  For as long as we have hands and fingers, we will need buttons and knobs. 

Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds

Designers want a ”clean” interior with minimal switchgear, and the financial department wants to lower the cost. 

Vi Bilägare gathered eleven modern cars from different manufacturers at an airfield och measured the time needed for a driver to perform different simple tasks, such as changing the radio station or adjusting the climate control. At the same time, the car was driven at 110 km/h (68 mph). We also invited an ”old-school” car without a touchscreen, a 17-year-old Volvo V70, for comparison. [And which destroyed the competition.]

One important aspect of this test is that the drivers had time to get to know the cars and their infotainment systems before the test started.

Results:
  • The driver in the worst-performing car needs four times longer to perform simple tasks than in the best-performing car.
  • The easiest car to understand and operate, by a large margin, is the 2005 Volvo V70. The four tasks is handled within ten seconds flat, during which the car is driven 306 meters at 110 km/h.
  • At the other end of the scale, Chinese electric car MG Marvel R performs far worse. The driver needs 44.6 seconds before all the tasks are completed, during which the car has travelled 1,372 meters – more than four times the distance compared to the old Volvo.
  • BMW iX and Seat Leon perform better, but both are still too complicated. The driver needs almost a kilometer to perform the tasks. Lots can happen in traffic during that time.

  • This all happens automatically, in a fraction of a second, and is a multi-million dollar industry
  • Personally-identifying information is not included, but campaigners argue that the volume of the data is still a violation of privacy 
  • Figures do NOT include numbers from Facebook and Amazon, only Google
  • US web users' habits are shared in advert sales processes 107 trillion times per year
  • European users' data is shared 71 billion times per year
