Psychosis Engine


There are some conflicting findings floating around the electroniverse. Japanese philosophizing psychologists suggests that addicts make phones look bad, and a Netherlands twin study says something similar. Likely only a coincidence that these studies were coming out at the same time Facebook was on trial in California for intentionally hurting kids. 

In the end, the only conclusion we can make is that science is hard:

People who are easily distracted by smartphones are more physiologically reactive, less attuned to their bodies

People who have an attentional bias towards smartphone stimuli typically display a lower interoceptive awareness, meaning they were less attuned to internal bodily signals such as their heartbeat - a pattern mirroring behavioral addictions like gambling or substance use.

Twin study challenges oversimplified claims about social media and well-being

6,000 twins in the Netherlands:
  • Small associations were found between social media use and well-being, with most being either negligible or statistically minor.
  • Genetic influences explained up to 72% of the variation in how much time people spend on social media.
  • People with higher well-being tended to use more platforms, but more passively (browsing rather than posting).
  • Those with lower well-being were more likely to post frequently on fewer platforms.

Social media research tool can lower political temperature — it could also lead to more user control over algorithms

Key: This research was done "without the direct cooperation of the platform"

Web extension tool coupled with an artificial intelligence large language model that scans posts for antidemocratic and extreme negative partisan sentiments. The tool then re-orders posts on the user's X feed in a matter of seconds:

Antidemocratic attitudes:
  • advocating for extreme measures against the opposing party
  • statements that show rejection of any bipartisan cooperation
  • skepticism of facts that favor the other party's views
  • willingness to forgo democratic principles to help the favored party

Where has this been all these years? Consider, there is often an immediate, unavoidable emotional response to seeing ^this kind of content ... making people feel bad the moment they see it.

The Offloading of Executive Function as Precursor to the Singularity


When they said the phone had become your exocortex, they were not kidding - the executive function of a human is being outsourced to computers (algorithms, AI, etc.); we're seeing it happen in real time. Not sure what this means for the future of humans, and not sure what the intorduction of the alphabet did in this regard, or what Socrates would have said about all this, but here we are:

Internet addiction affects behavior and development of adolescents, study finds

Meta study of small groups but fMRI: 12 articles involving 237 young people aged 10–19 with a formal diagnosis of internet addiction between 2013 and 2023.

The effects of internet addiction were seen throughout multiple neural networks in the brains of adolescents. There was a mixture of increased and decreased activity in the parts of the brain that are activated when resting (the default mode network).

Meanwhile, there was an overall decrease in the functional connectivity in the parts of the brain involved in active thinking (the executive control network).

These changes were found to lead to addictive behaviors and tendencies in adolescents, as well as behavior changes associated with intellectual ability, physical coordination, mental health and development.

And now, speaking of executive function, it appears that the executives among us (i.e., managers) are the most at-risk and yet the most unwilling to recognize that they are squarely on the chopping block in the coming revolution:

Sometimes the truth is easy, not often but sometimes:

In a randomly controlled experiment on more than 1,600 workers at one of the world's largest online travel agencies, Trip.com, employees who worked from home for two days a week were just as productive and as likely to be promoted as their fully office-based peers.

On a third key measure, employee turnover, the results were also encouraging. Resignations fell by 33% among workers who shifted from working full-time in the office to a hybrid schedule. Women, non-managers, and employees with long commutes were the least likely to quit their jobs when their treks to the office were cut to three days a week. Trip.com estimates that reduced attrition saved the company millions of dollars.

Also, resignations fell only among non-managers; managers were just as likely to quit whether they were hybrid or not.

And, managers predicted on average that remote working would hurt productivity, only to change their minds by the time the experiment ended.

Opponents say that employee training and mentoring, innovation, and company culture suffer when workers are not on site five days a week, but critics often confuse hybrid for fully remote.

This suggests that problems with fully remote work arise when it's not managed well.

Using AI to train AI: Model collapse could be coming for LLMs

The research shows that within a few generations, original content is replaced by unrelated nonsense, demonstrating the importance of using reliable data to train AI models. This is called model collapse. 

They found that feeding a model AI-generated data causes successive generations to degrade in their ability to learn, eventually leading to model collapse.

Nearly all of the recursively trained language models they tested tended to display repeating phrases. For example, a test was run using text about medieval architecture as the original input and by the ninth generation the output was a list of jackrabbits.

The authors propose that model collapse is an inevitable outcome of AI models that use training datasets created by previous generations.

Autonomy boosts college student attendance and performance

Students were given the choice to make their own attendance mandatory. Contradicting common faculty beliefs, 90% of students in the initial study chose to do so, committing themselves to attending class reliably or to having their final grades docked. Under this "optional-mandatory attendance" policy, students came to class more reliably than students whose attendance had been mandated.

Like too many rules make the willpower weak.

Breaking MAD: Generative AI could break the internet

Model Autophagy Disorder (MAD) by analogy to mad cow disease. Auto phage means eating yourself.

First peer-reviewed work on AI autophagy:

"The problems arise when this synthetic data training is, inevitably, repeated, forming a kind of a feedback loop--what we call an autophagous or 'self-consuming' loop," said Richard Baraniuk, Rice's C. Sidney Burrus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "Our group has worked extensively on such feedback loops, and the bad news is that even after a few generations of such training, the new models can become irreparably corrupted. This has been termed 'model collapse' by some--most recently by colleagues in the field in the context of large language models (LLMs). We, however, find the term 'Model Autophagy Disorder' (MAD) more apt, by analogy to mad cow disease."

Post Script: Contemplate the possibility of us having to rebuild the internet from scratch and on purpose, so like there will be literally armies of artists, writers and musicians, etc., who's sole job is to create authentic, original training data. (Idea stolen from artist Ben Grosser)

"It is clear that differences between individuals cannot be eliminated simply by means of training; in the future, user interfaces need to be streamlined for simpler use. This age-old goal has been forgotten at some point, and awkwardly designed interfaces have become a driver for the digital divide. We cannot promote a deeper and more equal use of computers in society unless we solve this basic problem."

"However, the research findings also show that age remains the most important factor in how well an individual can use applications. Older people clearly took more time to complete their tasks, and they also felt that the assignments were more burdensome."

Research AI model unexpectedly modified its own code to extend runtime

"The AI Scientist automates the entire research lifecycle. From generating novel research ideas, writing any necessary code, and executing experiments, to summarizing experimental results, visualizing them, and presenting its findings in a full scientific manuscript." It's run by Tokyo-based AI research firm Sakana AI.

"In one run, it edited the code to perform a system call to run itself," wrote the researchers on Sakana AI's blog post. "This led to the script endlessly calling itself. In another case, its experiments took too long to complete, hitting our timeout limit. Instead of making its code run faster, it simply tried to modify its own code to extend the timeout period."

Signs You May Have a Problem

Wait a second - are we really coming up with substance abuse treatments for cell phone usage? Like as if it was nicotine or heroin? If the healthier way to "use" a phone involves an override program that literally makes it more difficult to use, then I think we have a problem here. 

Managing screen time by making phones slightly more annoying to use

Once the user's designated screen limit has been reached, InteractOut can delay the phone's response to a user's gesture, shift where tapping motions are registered or slow the screen scrolling speed.

The strength of the delays and shifts continues to increase each time the user touches the phone, up to a pre-set maximum, and the user can decide how the app interferes with their phone use. The app's gradual interference allows users to continue using their phone, but with a little extra difficulty.

"If we just continuously add a little bit of friction to the interaction with the phone, eventually the user becomes more aware of what they are doing because there's a mismatch between what they expect to happen and what actually happens. That makes using smartphones a more deliberate process."

Companies may still buy consumer genetic information despite its modest predictive power

At-home DNA tests have provided millions with insights into their family history and health risk by simply spitting in a tube. Genetic risk screening of embryos at in vitro fertilization clinics is now available. These tests rely on polygenic scores—a tally of variations in human genes that influence a certain trait. However, while powerful at predicting traits in large populations, these scores are rather weak at an individual level.

"Firms operate under a lot of uncertainty and any little bit of information that they have about you is worthwhile."

Using an economic model, the researchers found that companies might be willing to pay because the information may raise profit and is relatively cheap.

The researchers argue that current laws and policies are inadequate to address the ethical, privacy, and legal concerns surrounding the potential corporate use of polygenic scores. While the US Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act prohibits discrimination in health coverage and employment based on genetic information, there are loopholes. The act only covers health insurance, excluding long-term, disability, life, and other insurances. It also doesn't apply to employers with fewer than 15 people, which accounts for 85% of US companies.

Why narcissists are more likely than others to believe in conspiracy theories

The researchers suggest that paranoia can lead to openness regarding conspiracy theories and that the need to remain in control during times of uncertainty, such as a pandemic, can lead narcissists to seize on outlandish claims to make themselves feel like they are still in control of their lives. And antagonism comes to the fore when others challenge their views regarding conspiracy theories, which only serves to bolster their support of them.

Conspiracy theories flourish on YouTube, study reports

The study examined 38,564 YouTube comments on 3 COVID-19 news videos on Fox News, Vox, and China Global Television Network, and featuring American business magnate and philanthropist Bill Gates, and found conspiracy theories dominated.

"A major implication of our study is that YouTube needs to redesign the space to provide social moderation infrastructure," said Dr. Gray. "Otherwise, the discursive strategies of conspiracy theorists will continue to evade detection systems, pose insurmountable challenges for content creators, and play into the hands of content producers who benefit from and/or encourage such activity."

Remember that 2.8% of Reddit's 2019 revenue can be traced back to unpaid moderators and other user user contributions that generate profit such as training algorithms, targeting advertising, and recruiting new users. It's called a "data labor subsidy".

Also note this report ignores the engagement engine that extracts value from its users, powered by cheap news and social outrage. These algorithms amplify information and condition behaviors that make money. We're engineering outrage on purpose, and conspiracy theories are just a secondary symptom of an infected network.

New research shows US Republican politicians increasingly spread news on social media from untrustworthy sources

Under attack: 

A study analyzing millions of tweets has revealed that Republican members of the U.S. Congress are increasingly circulating news from dubious sources, compared to their European counterparts. (They used NewsGuard, which assesses the credibility and transparency of news websites against nine journalistic criteria and identifies relevant details about the website's ownership, funding, credibility and transparency practices.)

Compared to the period 2016 to 2018, the number of links to untrustworthy websites has doubled over the past two years 2020 to 2022 (from 2.4% to 5.5%;  0.4%  for Democrats and around 0.215% for conservative British Tory members).

Researcher seeks to understand the regret behind social media use

Twenty-nine Android users ages 19–27 installed Finesse and let the app collect data on their phone usage for a week. After certain sessions on a social media app, Finesse would ask the users to select which features they regretted using.

The data showed that the users regretted at least some part of their social media use in 60% of sessions and regretted all their use in nearly 40% of sessions.

Features that offered recommended posts or content were most often regretted. 

In their research, people felt regret when the reward from scrolling recommended posts on social media did not match up to the alternative reward from focusing more on an assignment or lecture, spending more time with friends, or getting more sleep.

The apps are designed to suck people in and keep them scrolling. Frequently, people have to bypass addictive features to get to the content they initially sought.

The robots will control us.
