Twitter data reveals global communication network

I'd really like to read this study more in depth, but it's paywalled. So here's the methods: 
  • The scientists used the mentions mechanism in Twitter data to map the flow of information around the world. A mention in Twitter occurs when a user explicitly includes another @username in their tweet. This is a way to directly communicate with another user but is also a way to retransmit or retweet content.
  • The investigators examined Twitter data from December 2013 and divided the world into 8,000 cells, each approximately 100 kilometers wide. 
  • They measured modularity, a value that quantifies distance between communities on a network compared to a random arrangement. They also investigated a quantity known as betweenness centrality, which measures the number of shortest paths through each node.
  • 16 significant global communities. Three large communities exist in the Americas: an English-speaking region, Central and South American countries, and Brazil in its own group. Multiple communities exist in Europe, Asia and Africa.
  • Countries who had a common colonizer have a decreased preference of interaction (and suggests  hierarchical interactions with the colonizing country might inhibit interactions between former colonies).

Geography can become a root cause for inequality when cities are built in a way that fragments social networks

We've known this with the Twitter mountain studies from years ago, but alas:
  • Urban planning directly influences the formation of social networks in a city 
  • Subsequently the socio-economic equality or inequality of its citizens
  • Social relations provide individuals with essential access to resources, information, economic opportunities and other forms of support
  • In towns with more evenly distributed social networks, the economic inequality tended to be much lower 
  • Dataset from Hungary, 2 million individuals from 500 towns via a social media platform used by 40% of the population 
  • "You cannot force people to interact if they don't want to", yet, towns and cities frequently make decisions about the built environment that will have effects on how their inhabitants can meet and interact

Mobility data reveals universal law of visitation in cities

The Sante Fe Institute is good at using scaling laws to determine the number of visitors to any location in a city. They use only these two variables -- how far visitors travel and how often they visit. 

"Imagine you are standing on a busy plaza, say in Boston, and you see people coming and going. This may look pretty random and chaotic, but the law shows that these movements are surprisingly structured and predictable. It basically tells you how many of these people are coming from 1, 2 or 10 kilometers away and how many are visiting once, twice or 10 times a month", says lead author Markus Schläpfer of ETH Zurich's Future Cities Laboratory. "And the best part is that this same regularity holds not only in Boston, but across cities worldwide."

Universally, they found that the number of visitors to any urban location scales as the inverse square of both travel distance from home and the visitation frequency. Like the gravitational pull of a large planet, an attractive city plaza with fine museums and famous shops draws relatively more visitors from more distant locations, though less frequently than those coming from nearby locations, their relative numbers being predictably determined by the inverse square law. A further surprising consequence of this new visitation law is that the same number of people visit the location whether they are coming from, say, 10km away 3 times a week, or from 3km away 10 times a week.

Forget what you think you know about viral marketing, study suggests

Maybe advertising does work:

Even just a bit of advertising or other mass communication — "top-down" information that comes from outside the network — effectively equalizes the influence of everyone across the network [including the hub at the center, and against Malcolm Gladwell's network position priority described in Tipping Point.]

In instances where there is even a small amount of advertising — even when it is just a quarter of a percent as strong as word-of-mouth — there's virtually no difference between the influence of the person at the center of a network and those further out on the string.

Communication technology, study of collective behavior must be 'crisis discipline'

  • Researchers now say that the study of collective behavior must rise to a "crisis discipline," just like medicine, conservation and climate science have done.
  • Social media platforms are driven to maximize engagement and profitability, not to ensure sustainability or accurate information—and the vulnerability of these systems to misinformation and disinformation poses a dire threat to health, peace, global climate and more.
  • No one, not even the platform creators themselves, have much understanding of how their design decisions impact human collective behavior, the authors argue.
  • Good reminder: Historically collective behavior has best been understood as when animals or people exhibit coordinated action without an obvious leader. This includes how fish school to evade predators or when a crowd spontaneously breaks into applause or becomes silent.

Cities like Paris may be optimal urban form for reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Scientists meld Twitter and satellite views to understand epic impact

  • Unique look at two enormous global projects that are part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, in part to understand if early concerns about environmental damage emerged, and if public sentiment turned critical
  • Examined satellite images of the vast areas the projects covered to see how forests, grassland, bodies of water and other land types changed
  • Nighttime light imagery as a way of gauging economic changes (more lights means more economic development)
  • Carefully chosen keywords and hashtags on Twitter to understand communication before, during and after the construction projects
  • "Our analysis shows that both projects have led to a substantial loss of natural land but gains in artificial land," said Yingjie Li, a Ph.D. candidate at MSU-CSIS who is the paper's lead author. "Despite this, we found that, overall, public sentiment toward the projects was largely positive and improved over time, which contradicts the prevalent pessimism by the Belt and Road Project critics."
  • People in more developed areas of Kenya and Pakistan were more positive about the sweeping changes than people in less-developed regions

Question though -- how did they make sure that the Twitter data was from people and not robots? I'm looking at you, human flesh engine. And I'm looking at any post on Reddit's World News that has the word China in the title, and how it has dozens of comments instead of thousands, because it's been smashed by robots and the moderators can't help but cull the real comments along with the fake. Case in point -- the comment section for a recent article about the closing of Macau due to covid numbers (circa July 2022), despite over 50 comments, had not one single instance of the words "China", or even "Macau" or "gambling" or "gaming", because the whole conversation on the sub had been manipulated by the Chinese human flesh engine to avoid any discourse about China itself. 

Looking at the paper itself, we see only reference to "0.4 million unique users" but no mention to whether they tried to discriminate between real users and fake ones. Also, there is no mention of fake accounts in the "Study limitations".

Socioeconomic networks and built environments of cities contribute to lower rates of psychological depression

Luís Bettencourt's work that shows how the infrastructure networks of cities — and how people move about such networks — can lead to rapid increases in social interaction and entails higher rates of innovation and wealth production.

One main finding is that, on average, people have more contacts across a greater variety of functions when they live in larger cities. Understanding that social isolation is a significant risk factor for depression, it made sense that more socialization through these varied networks could be protective against depression.

Deep learning helps to predict traffic crashes before they happen

Typically, these types of risk maps are captured at much lower resolutions that hover around hundreds of meters, which means glossing over crucial details since the roads become blurred together. These maps, though, are 5x5 meter grid cells, and the higher resolution brings newfound clarity: The scientists found that a highway road, for example, has a higher risk than nearby residential roads, and ramps merging and exiting the highway have an even higher risk than other roads.

Previous attempts to predict crash risk have been largely "historical," as an area would only be considered high-risk if there was a previous nearby crash.

To evaluate the model, the scientists used crashes and data from 2017 and 2018, and tested its performance at predicting crashes in 2019 and 2020. Many locations were identified as high-risk, even though they had no recorded crashes, and also experienced crashes during the follow-up years.

Their data: density, speed, and direction of traffic, and satellite imagery that describes road structures, such as the number of lanes, whether there's a shoulder, or if there's a large number of pedestrians

Physicists unify sociological theories that explain social stability

"Based on homophilic one-to-one interactions, the computer simulation produced a society that almost magically self-organized towards more stability."

Immigration patterns are reflected in Facebook data on popular foods and drinks

Fucking genius:
Researchers have developed a novel strategy for using Facebook data to measure cultural similarity between countries, revealing associations between immigration patterns and people's food and drink interests. ... The method employs data on the top 50 food and drink preferences for any given country as captured by the Facebook Advertising Platform. ... For instance, the top 50 foods and drinks from Mexico are more popular in the U.S. than the top 50 U.S. foods and drinks are in Mexico, reflecting a greater degree of immigration from Mexico to the U.S. than vice versa.
But also, there's cultural evolutionary science in them data, because it isn't just food and drinks that are moving disproportionately between the countries. The metabolism of the anthroposphere.

Using graph neural networks to measure the spatial homogeneity of road networks

  • 11,790 urban road networks in 30 cities worldwide, including cities from either developed countries or developing countries
  • "Traditional road network metrics based on simple measures only provide a coarse characterization of urban road networks."
  • They specifically trained the graph neural networks to learn the structure patterns of the road networks in the observed regions, so that they could then predict the structure of the network in the hidden region.
  • (Intercity and intracity homogeneity across all the cities is what they're looking for.)
  • The graph neural networks developed by this team of researchers could ultimately be used in different countries worldwide to measure the similarities between cities, evaluate urban policies and summarize urban activities. 

"Beyond road networks, the homogeneity theories of street views, land use, and other infrastructure networks could also be established. There is much more opportunity to find more deep insights into complex urban systems."

Just Lévy Things

Lévy patterns are one of the craziest things there is; proof that free will is an illusion, and one of those typically invisible patterns that can be used to predict our behavior (and to mimic our behavior, for those of us making artificial humans).

It happens all over the place, from the way animals forage, to the way our eyes move across a computer screen. It's one of those universal laws that happens in biology and in physics too (called Brownian walk, or Brownian motion). But you might remember it more easily by calling it simply "foraging behavior", a mixture of small random movements with less frequent larger movements.

It's no secret that we do this; our eyes get mapped when we look at websites to figure out how to make us click-buy uncontrollably. Hidden cameras in retail shops do the same thing. Pedestrian traffic, vehicle traffic, pandemics even, you name it. 

What we don't know is the full "why" of Lévy walks. Why use such a chaotic approach; wouldn't a more rational approach get better results? Researchers at RIKEN made a simulation that found Lévy patterns popping up spontaneously at critical moments such as the edge between Exploitation vs Exploration -- for example when an animal has to decide whether to exploit areas that are already known to be beneficial, versus exploring for new areas.

You know exploit/explore, it's how you decide where to eat dinner -- on those nights when Old Trusty just isn't cutting it, then it's time to explore. But at the same time, you can't "explore" every night, or going out to eat would be exhausting, and less rewarding in general. So the next time you're at that critical juncture, just let the chaos take over. Or, soon enough, let the Lévy algorithm do it for you.

Investigating dynamics of democratic elections using physics theory

Sometimes, physics theories and models can be used to study seemingly unrelated phenomena, such as social behaviors or social dynamics.

 

While human beings are not exactly similar to individual physical particles, theories or techniques that physicists use to analyze "behavioral patterns" in atoms or electrons may aid the general understanding of large-scale social behaviors, as long as these behaviors do not depend on small-scale details.

 

Based on this idea, some researchers use physics theories to investigate social behaviors that take place during democratic elections, for example.

 

The very idea of a quantifiable social network was unknown to the average person prior to the year 2000. (Check out Barabasi's Links for a reminder of what the world was like at that time.) Now, the idea is clear as day, with the trademark "nodes-and-links" emblazoned into the retina of any 21st century citizen. We all understand what a social network is, and being that a social network is the marriage of sociology and network science, we can all understand these models and their implications.

 

Below is a list of articles related to sociothermodynamics, although I tend to use this term as a synonym for predictive analytics as well, so there are other articles about using all kinds of big data (like semantic analysis) to make sense out of the sloppy sociobiological mess that we spread all over the planet. And speaking of spreading all over, the last article uses biological data from slime molds to describe human social behavior.

 

 

The physics that drives periodic economic downturns

There exist universal mechanisms that give rise to laws governing the growth of economics.

 

The way spilled milk spreads across the floor can explain why economic downturns regularly occur, as a natural feature of physics, rooted in the time-dependent movement of spreading over an area. Growth of the innumerable spreading phenomena over time follows the shape of an "S curve" otherwise known as the sigmoid function.

 

A bottle of milk spilled on the floor will have a small initial footprint, followed by a rapid finger-shaped expansion across the kitchen's tiles, followed by a final phase of slow creep.

 

This same history of slow, fast, slow can be seen in chemical reactions, population growth, the adoption of new technology and even the spreading of new ideas.

Secularism and tolerance of minority groups predicts future prosperity of countries

Changes in culture generally come before any improvements in wealth, education and democracy, rather than the other way around.

 

Promoting democracy, whether through economic exchange or regime change, will only succeed if combined with promoting openness and tolerance of minority groups.

 

(In the 20th Century) places which had the greatest improvement also tended to have pre-existing secular and tolerant cultures.

 

 

Study of 62 countries finds people react similarly to everyday situations

Facebook users change their language before an emergency hospital visit - study

Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Stony Brook University's Computer Science Department compared patients' Facebook posts to their medical records, which showed that a shift to more formal language and/or descriptions of physical pain, among other changes, reliably preceded hospital visits.

 

 

Wikipedia visits to disease outbreak pages show impact of news media on public attention

During the 2016 Zika outbreak, news exposure appears to have had a far bigger impact than local disease risk on the number of times people visited Zika-related Wikipedia pages in the U.S.

 

Previous research has explored how public opinion responds to media exposure during an emerging outbreak, but has mostly relied on surveys rather than observational data.

 

The analysis showed that Zika-related Wikipedia page view counts during the outbreak were highly synchronized with mentions of the virus in web and national TV news at both the national and state level.

I almost forgot to mention -- network science is rapidly evolving into a useful tool for understanding our world, and there's a possibility that it can go even further than physics in modeling human dynamics; I saw earlier this year a that network science could do a better job than physics of describing what happens inside the sun. [The link to that study is probably on this weblog somewhere].

 

New research published in Nature Physics uses tools from network science to explain how complex communication networks can efficiently convey large amounts of information to the human brain. Conducted by postdoc Christopher Lynn, graduate students Ari Kahn and Lia Papadopoulos, and professor Danielle S. Bassett, the study found that different types of networks, including those found in works of literature, musical pieces, and social connections, have a similar underlying structure that allows them to share information rapidly and efficiently.

 

The researchers evaluated 40 real-world communication networks to see what features were crucial for communicating information. They looked at works of English literature, including the canon of Shakespeare and Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," along with musical pieces such as Mozart's Sonata No 11 and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." They also studied networks of social relationships, including co-authorship networks in science and Facebook friend connections.

 

After looking at this diverse group of networks, the researchers found that the large-scale structure of a network was essential to that network's ability to convey information. What was surprising was just how similar this structure was across the different networks, whether the network was representing noun transitions in a work of literature or melodic progressions in a piece of music.

 

What makes these networks both information-rich and efficient is a balance between two key network features known as "community" structure and "heterogeneous" structure. Community structure occurs when nodes clump together and form clusters that evoke related concepts. Saying the word "dog" might bring to mind "ball," "Frisbee," or "bone," for example. Such community structure helps make networks more efficient because a person can anticipate what word or idea might come next.

 

But if a person can anticipate what comes next, there won't be much information conveyed because information is directly related to surprise. To provide information, networks have to have a "heterogeneous" mixture of both well-connected and sparsely connected nodes. Take the works of Shakespeare as an example. While "the" and "and" are used 28,944 and 27,317 times, respectively, there are also 12,493 word forms that only occur once. "At a hub like, 'the,' you can't anticipate where you are about to go," says Lynn. "It turns out that these hub nodes are really important for generating surprisal or, equivalently, information."

 

 

Evolution selects for 'loners' that hang back from collective behavior-at least in slime molds

Testing whether loners are random or a predictable quantity, possibly subject to natural or cultural selection:

Evolution could indeed select for loner behavior in slime molds. Loners are both an ecological and an evolutionary insurance plan, a way to diversify a genetic portfolio to ensure the survival of the social, collective behavior:

 

Slime molds, when they are threatened by starvation, the tiny amoebae coalesce into slug-like creatures that then aggregate into a large, swaying tower that grows upward with a burgeoning slimy top—until that top sticks to an unwitting passing insect, the starvation-resistant spores hitchhiking out into the world, while all the individuals making up the base and stalk die.

 

But what caught Tarnita's eye were the slime mold loners, the amoebae that resist the biochemical call to form the tower.

 

Here and there, some scattered cells on the plate just didn't seem to react at all to this aggregation process.

 

They tested the loners to see if they were flawed in some way, but they couldn't find anything wrong with them.

 

It could make sense for some fraction of the slime mold population to remain behind in order to take advantage of any resources that might return in the environment while the rest of the cells are aggregating.

 

30% chose the loner life over collective action.

 

The proportion of solitary cells in the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum is not simply determined by each cell individually tossing a coin. It results instead from interactions between the [organism] and the environment.

 

The decision not to become part of the collective is, in fact, taken collectively. All the cells kind of talk to each other chemically: 'Oh, you're going? I guess I'm staying.' There's communication involved in becoming a loner.

Grindr and Twitter face 'out of control' complaint

As an American, I like to read from the BBC, because it's good for perspective.

Some of the big dogs in Personal Data (aka social media networking platforms) are being accused of an "insane violation" of massive commercial surveillance and unlawfully sharing user data.

The complaint says that every time you use one of these applications on your mobile device, the advertisement company -- not the social site you're using like Ashley Madison (jk) but the advertiser behind them -- they get your GPS location, as well as a dozen other device identifiers (such as the fact that you're cheating on your wife).

In Europe, there is a thing that protects web users from "leaking" their personal data every time they access the internet. It's called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and it says that any website that holds in a database user information -- any user information, like usernames and passwords -- they have to disclose that to the user. Even if they're going to use cookies on their site (to track you), they have to disclose that, and they have to be clear about how they're getting your information and what they will do with, like who else they'll give it to (and how much they charge for it jk).

This complaint, however, says that the advertising companies use policies that are straight-incomprehensible. And then they say they are "out of control." Pretty intense accusations.

Again, as an American reading this, I am struck because well, these accusations point to behavior that is totally normal and acceptable in the United States. There is no GDPR here. Advertising companies make money and the websites make money, and we love money, shit. If they do it by exploiting the massive data-collecting and profile-building opportunity that is the internet, then they are entrepreneurs.

Europeans are outraged. Americans however, meh. When the news broke that the NSA was conducting a panoptical surveillance operation on the entire nation's population, and under the direction of and coordinated by the government, folks didn't seem to mind.

If the general commercial industry is doing it too, not a problem. And that's the perspective you get when reading a foreign country's news, you get to turn the camera back on yourself. The country that believes in freedom at all costs and in all ways, they've got nothing to hide, and so they don't worry about these things.

How about the Internet of Things, where your house is like there is no more internet; I am the internet now. Here's a current example from a company that connects your doorbell to the internet. They're getting riffed for sending personal data about the user to third parties with names like Crashalytics, which sounds helpful, and also to "deep-linking platforms" which sounds a bit ominous.

Scientists use phone movement to predict personality types

I know they call it big data, but the flip side to that is the little data, nano data that sounds ludicrous. This is where I remind folks that 20 years from now, we will be able to see 360 degrees into pictures, based in the interference of light patterns and how they affect the things actually in the picture. Or how we will be able to see in a dark room by listening to the absolutely miniscule  interference patterns of sound waves as they bounce around, all taken from decades-old youtube videos. You think that sounds crazy now, but try to imagine what the world will be like when you're torrenting yottabytes from your phone, which will be in your brain. There will be sensors on your hand that will immediately identify the microbiomes of the people you shake hands with, and tell you super-intimate details about who they slept with last night. People will stop shaking hands. They will stop making contact period.

Humans on a Chip


Treating humans like molecules are the main idea behind computational sociothermodynamics, which is the science of predicting human behavior based on thermodynamics models of particles. It's a way to gain insight into a really complex problem, and from a rather unsuspecting place. And we will be seeing a lot more of this in years to come.

Here's a new model that works by measuring how people distribute themselves as a function of the density of the crowd they're in. It's called a Density-Functional Fluctuation Theory of Crowds.

The model was originally designed for predicting the behavior of quantum systems, and it was already tested using fruit flies, because boy does science love fruit flies.

It generates a "frustration function" that measures the probability that someone will move to a new location given a specific density for that crowd. At a concert, for example, people will try to get a good spot, as long as it's not too crowded. When it gets too crowded, they'll move. And when it gets too crowded after that, they riot. Just kidding. (Not really.)

The model can then predict the "mood" of the crowd by how this frustration function evolves over time. In the article where I found this, it was suggested that this model could be used to predict a rowdy crowd before it starts. Or the moment a peaceful protest changes phase from a liquid to a gas, if you know what I mean.

Then again, who cares about a predictive model when we have neck-rec! [neck-recognition technology, an advance beyond face recognition]

This is a drone that detects movements in human faces and necks in order to accurately source heart rates and breathing rates of crowds. (I like to refer to this as physiodata, because that sounds good.)

In other words, the resolution is so fine that it can see and measure the pulse of your jugular vein, and then face-rec your id, of course. And it will do this for an entire crowd, and in less time than it takes you to snap a picture.

The team used a novel topological technique, based on connections between places, to characterize the first-time slums rather than a traditional geometric approach.

"By understanding the fundamental topology — the relationship between places of residence and work to urban infrastructure networks — we can determine parts of cities remain only incipiently connected," said coauthor Luís Bettencourt, director of the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation at the University of Chicago.
