Vision, Accuracy, and the Right Brain


In a TED talk I can't seem to forget, Iain McGilchrist, in RSA fashion, animates the two sides of ourselves. These are the two sides of our brains, the two hemispheres. I don't think I need to explain the Left Brain - Right Brain distinction on account of its general popularity. I will only say that this is not an absolute thing; it's a heuristic for understanding how our complicated heads run all that bugged out code up there.

The part of McGilchrist's talk I can't forget lies in his premonition that humans have been heading in the Left direction since as far back as we can remember, but it may soon be time for the pendulum to turn the other direction. It's hard to believe. We can't have megacities without the Left Brain. No spaceships, no biodomes, no nanofabricated body modifications.

Or can we? If you read about contemporary advances in artificial intelligence, you might be thinking that it's quite possible.

Much of the new things happening in this field (which are actually old ideas running on new hardware) are based on a pretty revolutionary paradigm.  I'm referring here to deep learning neural nets and more generally the idea of machine learning. This semantically refers to an approach to computing that uses a kind of brute force instead of a superintelligent program. It's kind of like a Wisdom of the Crowds thing plus computers; instead of one thousand guesses, there's 100 trillion guesses. (I say 'a kind of brute force' because in other instances, some would could the traditional method a brute force of computation.)

So the answer they come up with isn't exact, it's approximate. But when you have to query petabytes of data, you can no longer expect an exact answer.

Check out for example this new thing where scientists Frankenstein a neural net and a cell phone together to makeshift a microscope as powerful as one in a high grade laboratory. We no longer need to see every micropixel to get a clear picture of what we're looking at. Instead we teach an algorithm to see, and it does something that in theory is similar to what our brain does when we see. We make stuff up, we fill in the dots, we approximate. (In actuality, the algorithm is taught not how to see, but how to learn to see.)

We live in this post-truth world, right? Facts don't matter; belief matters. Being right is not as important as convincing people that you're right. That's a tangent. But we do live in a world of Big Data, so big we really don't know what to do with it all. We simply can't make computers powerful enough to handle all of it. But we have this new approach that can scale-up. It approximates, which is not what we're used to, but it does reach the scale of Big Data.

Have we reached this inflection point where our technology is starting to act more like our brain (the whole brain, not just the left side)? Is there where we find out, after hundreds of years (after the Enlightenment / Scientific Revolution) that absolute certainty is not the ultimate goal in all knowledge-gathering endeavors? Just speculating here, but it sure seems like we're headed for a future that looks more like a wet biological mess than a crystallized spreadsheet.

Fake It til You Make It

It sounds like what they're saying here is that people don't want science, they want bad science. I should rephrase - money doesn't want good science, but people do. Social science in particular, is in a bit of a pickle these days (see the replication crisis).

This also sounds a lot like the word of the year for 2016, post-truth, related to 'truthiness' and referencing a world where emotional reaction has more traction that cold hard facts. This is something we've always known, albeit at times in our cultural unconscious. We make things that fight this, I'm sure people like Bejamin Franklin, newspaper editor, had something to say about it. But our defenses have been lacking, and could use a rethink.

Smaldino cites an experiment by the American psychologist Daryl Bem, who purported to show that undergraduates could predict the future and published the result in a prestigious journal.

"What he found was the equivalent of flipping a bunch of pennies, nickels, and quarters, asking students to guess heads or tails each time, and then reporting that psychic abilities exist for pennies, but not nickels and quarters, because the students were right 53% of the time for the pennies, rather than the expected 50%. It’s insane,” said Smaldino. “Bem used exactly the same standards of evidence that all social psychologists were using to evaluate their findings. And if those standards allowed this ridiculous a hypothesis to make the cut, imagine what else was getting through.”

The Uncanny Valley
The uncanny valley is a hypothesis in the field of human aesthetics which holds that when human features look and move almost, but not exactly, like natural human beings, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers.

The "valley" refers to the dip in a graph of the comfort level of humans as subjects move toward a healthy, natural human likeness described in a function of a subject's aesthetic acceptability.

There is nothing more intriguing than the repulsive: A car-crash, a rotting corpse, a deformed human - of the mental proclivity, particularly. The Uncanny Valley, however, is in another class of revulsion. It rides that fine line, the liminal zone of quasi- quantum- existence, the seat of all things aesthetic, where the tension between beauty and ugly is in not-exactly equilibrium-enough to stay that way, vacillating about its target. Am I irresistibly enthralled, or alarmingly frightened? None, and both; a flickering Necker cube of decision.

Perhaps the power with which the Uncanny Valley toggles our hedonic switch comes from our tendency, or is it our need, to seek ourselves in things that seem like us, in order that we might create ourselves, in our own image. We give animals emotions, we imagine dialogue between the sun and the wind; but most of all, we see ourselves in others. And that is how we make our selves.

Were it not for others, we would not be able to know ourselves. Something about sympathetic mirror neurons, collemulation, or mimetic desire. Catch-up on the mirrorbox. And the source is in the eyes, the windows to see through. But the story is worse than this. Were it not for those windows, we would not be able to create ourselves.

Look into the eyes of a robot, not just any robot, but one that falls just-so into the Valley. What do you really see?

You see yourself in those eyes, because you are human, and that is what we do. But you are afraid. One day, it may be you. All of you. And then what?

Do you want to be the robot, or are you afraid? You can't decide. It is against your program, rather, it has yet to be written. When something of such human-ness exposes itself to you, opening its reservoir of self-ness, you cannot resist. How does it look, the world through those eyes? Is it you? Could it be?

Never? We'll see.

In 1970 the Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori published a short paper in the journal Energy where he conjured the term bukimi no tani, or "uncanny valley".

Conclusion: Certainty and Uncertainty
The human desire for the intellectual mastery of one’s environment is a strong one. Intellectual certainty provides psychical shelter in the struggle for existence. However it came to  be, it signifies a defensive position against the assault of hostile forces, and the lack of such  certainty is equivalent to lack of cover in the episodes of that never-ending war of the human and  organic world for the sake of which the strongest and most impregnable bastions of science were  erected.
