Artificial Artists


Note: This piece of news got overshadowed pretty quickly; the open-sourced, LAION-powered Stable Diffusion was release mid-August. The WikiArt dataset (see mention below) has 40,000 images, whereas the LAION has somewhere between 400 million and 5 billion (sorry I just can't tell anymore because I see both numbers in a bunch of different places). 

A model to generate artistic images based on text descriptions

Dynamic memory generative adversarial network (DM-GAN) can automatically generate unique artistic images based on text descriptions.

"Due to the lack of datasets with paired text description and artistic images, it is hard to directly train an algorithm which can create art based on text input," the researchers explained in their paper.

"To address this issue, we split our task into three steps."

First use the DM-GAN model to generate a realistic image that represents a text description.
Subsequently use neural network ResNet to classify the image produced by the DM-GAN into one of the genre categories outlined by the WikiArt dataset, which contains more than 40,000 artistic paintings produced by 195 artists. Then use deep style transfer, and done.

Your brain is better at busting deepfakes than you are

When looking at participants' brain activity, the University of Sydney researchers found deepfakes could be identified 54% of the time. However, when participants were asked to verbally identify the deepfakes, they could only do this 37% of the time.

"That tells us the brain can spot the difference between deepfakes and authentic images."

(Interpretation: In the future you will need an EEG just to communicate with your own brain.)

Whatever Happened To Good Old Fashioned Robots


Twisted soft robots navigate mazes without human or computer guidance

The soft robots are made of liquid crystal elastomers in the shape of a twisted ribbon, resembling translucent rotini. 

When you place the ribbon on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit), which is hotter than the ambient air, the portion of the ribbon touching the surface contracts, while the portion of the ribbon exposed to the air does not. This induces a rolling motion in the ribbon. And the warmer the surface, the faster it rolls.

"It's much like the robotic vacuums that many people use in their homes," Yin says. "Except the soft robot we've created draws energy from its environment and operates without any computer programming."

Robotic lightning bugs take flight

Electroluminescent soft artificial muscles for flying, insect-scale robots that communicate with each other. 

These researchers previously demonstrated a new fabrication technique to build soft actuators, or artificial muscles, that flap the wings of the robot. and are made by alternating ultrathin layers of elastomer and carbon nanotube electrode in a stack and then rolling it into a squishy cylinder. When a voltage is applied to that cylinder, the electrodes squeeze the elastomer, and the mechanical strain flaps the wing. Electroluminescent zinc sulfate particles into the elastomeric artificial muscles.

Robotic arms connected directly to brain of partially paralyzed man allows him to feed himself

A person with very limited upper body mobility, who hasn't been able to use his fingers in about 30 years, has just fed himself dessert using his mind and some smart robotic hands.

The new paper outlines an innovative model for shared control that enables a human to maneuver a pair of robotic prostheses with minimal mental input. "This shared control approach is intended to leverage the intrinsic capabilities of the brain machine interface and the robotic system, creating a 'best of both worlds' environment where the user can personalize the behavior of a smart prosthesis,"

Extra 'eye' movements are the key to better self-driving cars

When tested with shifted images that mimicked naturally altered visual input that would occur when the eyes move, performance dropped drastically to chance level. Classification improved significantly after training the network with shifted images, as long as the direction and size of the eye movements that resulted in the shift were also included. Adding the eye movements and their corresponding motor commands to the network model allowed the system to better cope with visual noise in the images. New method for making tissue transparent could speed the study of many diseases

A new tissue-clearing method for rendering large biological samples transparent. 

For studies of large body parts or even entire animals.

Tissue-clearing methods until now have used either organic solvents or water-based solvents which require burdensome, labor-intensive procedures, often using hazardous chemicals. The new methods uses a sequential combination of organic solvents and water-based detergents, and makes use of water-based hydrogels to protect those molecules within the tissue that need to be preserved.

"In many cases, you can just put the whole thing in a jar and keep it in a shaker on your benchtop until it's done."

Can recognize its owner by face. Which means it can recognize an intruder by its non-owner face. Also this: multiple cameras placed strategically over its body surface.

Also, and I know they didn't mean it, but the news outlet here (TechXplore) says "CyberDog is very similar in appearance to Boston Dynamics' Spot..." and there's a reason for that, which we all know. It's a good thing we're doing such a good job of stopping 12-year olds from pirating $50 video games, because we wouldn't want them to grow up and become entire countries (China) that steal $50 million dollars in research and development.

Photosynthesizing algae injected into the blood vessels of tadpoles supply oxygen to their brains

German scientists have developed another method that allows tadpoles to "breathe" by introducing algae into their bloodstream to supply oxygen.

"The algae actually produced so much oxygen that they could bring the nerve cells back to life, if you will," says senior author Hans Straka of Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. "For many people, it sounds like science fiction, but after all, it's just the right combination of biological schemes and biological principles."

No Man's Sky

Synthetic Biological Engineering and Plant Nanobionics:
Engineers create light-emitting plants that can be charged repeatedly

Using specialized nanoparticles embedded in plant leaves, MIT engineers have created a light-emitting plant that can be charged by an LED. After 10 seconds of charging, plants glow brightly for several minutes, and they can be recharged repeatedly.

Their first generation of light-emitting plants contained nanoparticles that carry luciferase and luciferin, which work together to give fireflies their glow. In the case of glowing plants, a light capacitor can be used to store light in the form of photons, then gradually release it over time using phosphor, a material that can absorb either visible or ultraviolet light and then slowly release it as a phosphorescent glow. The researchers used a compound called strontium aluminate, which can be formed into nanoparticles, as their phosphor. Before embedding them in plants, the researchers coated the particles in silica, which protects the plant from damage.

Infused through pores on the surface of the leaves, the particles accumulate in a spongy layer called the mesophyll, where they form a thin film that absorbs photons either from sunlight or an LED. They also showed that they could illuminate the leaves of a plant called the Thailand elephant ear, which can be more than a foot wide—a size that could make the plants useful as an outdoor lighting source.

Scientists show how an enigmatic bacterium from the Gobi desert harvests solar energy

The new organism belongs to a rare bacterial genus called Gemmatimonas phototrophica, and it contained bacteriochlorophyll, a pigment related to chlorophylls found in plants. Analysis of its genome by a collaboration of European and British scientists suggested that this novel bacterium conducts an ancient form of photosynthesis.

New technique improves directed evolution of microorganisms

They're using Inducible Directed Evolution (IDE), which sounds like a better way of programming a virus to make genetic changes to a bacteria, or whatever you like. Just another step on the ladder of artificial evolution.

Artificial Intuition - It's What Computers Crave


AKA The Pendulum of the Anthropocene

Ten years ago I recall myself meta-presenting to my high school class Iain McGilchrist on the TED stage, via RSA Animate. He wrote a book called The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, about the left brain right brain dichotomy and about how the history of humans since the Enlightenment is a story of the shift from right-brained religious order to left-brained scientific discovery.

But I being an art teacher, and they being young people who had no reason to believe that the entire history of humankind is any indication of human futures, I speculated aloud, for their sake -- are we really destined to continue on this trajectory forever? What if the pendulum were to swing in the other direction? Could there be a world where the Right brain of feelings and emotions are more important than facts and data?

I didn't think what I was speculating could actually be true. My job was to ask the craziest questions imaginable, in the hopes of stretching the most malleable material on Earth -- the minds of young people. I myself could never imagine a world where the right brain became the dominant force. But I always held back my own biases, because one thing I was certain about was that the world these kids would grow up in would be very different from the world I grew up in, and they only way to prepare them was to forget everything I knew, and say nothing else but "what if".

And then it happened. Facts became optional. Computers became creative. Only 500 years after its appearance, Reason has begun to lose its appeal, and its utility.

On the Brains of Machines


This picture is kind of like an infrared camera but for algorithms.

It's a heat map for the eyeballs of a computer; what is it looking at, what are its clues?

In this case, it's looking at the water, not at the ship, in order to identify the image as a ship. (We're also assigning agency to this thing, in case anyone's keeping track.)

Neural nets are a big deal these days, but they come with a new problem. We don't know what they're doing, because the thing that makes them so special is that they figure out their own algorithm. (Agency again.) Computer programmers are not writing the programs; the networks write the programs using trial and error. Machine Learning is another name for this idea of iterative development.

There's a lot of people who would like to know what's going on in there, mostly to see how these things are getting their answers, and to make sure that the algorithms don't cheat to get their answers. Some learn bad habits, like detecting "ships" in pictures with water (which means they're good at detecting water, not ships), or by skimming metadata, which means they're good at classifying metadata, not pictures of stuff. These heat maps, and more importantly the forensics-like algorithms that inform them, are very helpful. They let us see inside the brains of the machine.

Speaking of disembodied brains, here's the artificial synapse. It uses a new type of hardware memory system that works more like a brain does, in an array, where they can do their computing business simultaneously. Neuromorphic computing.

And if you want to grow those artificial synapses in a 3-D tissue culture (brains in a dish), call these guys.

Cerebral organoids -- they're more for studying how the brain works than they are about making artificial brains. At least they're not using human brains, right?

Wrong; there are ethical concerns that these organoids might develop consciousness, or have already developed consciousness.

The Shanzhai Sun


"Shanzhai" means "counterfeit goods," which is China's way of saying "Made In China"


Let's start with the story from a few months ago, where China plans to make artificial moons for nighttime illumination. Mirrors in outerspace that redirect sunlight from low earth orbit. Now they're looking pretty good on the nuclear fusion front, i.e., artificial suns.


Granted, you must take every headline about nuclear fusion as fake news, because we are unlikely to see its boundless surplus of power in our lifetime. Depends on who you ask though. At this point, a Chinese reactor is reaching 100 million degrees, which is way more than the Sun itself, but still only enough to maintain such a nuclear meltdown for 10 seconds.


Regardless of "when," folks like the futurist Isaac Arthur do a good job of explaining how this major shift in energy production can be used to transform our world. Megastructures that surround our entire Earth, or spaceships that span the Milky Way, all these things are possible with nuclear fusion as an energy source (some faster than light travel wouldn't help).


Bottom line, this gives a different meaning to the idea of China Fake. Also wondering what the plans look like for Fake Earth and Fake Humans.

Man fools officers with car made of snow, gets fake parking ticket

I'd like to take a minute to relay a true story, so that you can say you know the guy who told you. Many winters ago, we went to visit a friend in Jersey City, one of those unofficial boroughs of NYC. It was a particularly bad winter for snow and Jersey City is a particularly bad city for parking, and we had to drive around and around and around the block. It has snowed let me see, I think a good 6 feet in a few weeks time, with the temperature below freezing for most of the time, and that's not normal at all for the NYC region. Finding a place to park was nearly impossible.

There were people parked on their front lawns, double-parked on the main ave, 45-degree angle parked on the corners, and cars parked on 45-degree angles up the side of snow banks. And then, and I shit you not (why would I lie about this), there was a car parked on top of another car. Yes. The car on the bottom was fully encased, entombed in a frozen sarcophagus of snow, from snowfall upon snowfall and snowplow upon snowplow. The only reason I even knew for sure that it was a car underneath was because you could unmistakabley see the side view mirror peeking out. The car on top, it was a Jeep, rode up a not-so-steep snowramp up the back and sat there, triumphantly, supported by the frozen block underneath it. Maybe this happens all the time in Canada or Buffalo, New York, but for us here, that was a sight to behold.

Solar powered self-mowing lawnmowers are the most mind-numbing thing there is, when you think about it.

Second in line is the fact that we have had to build structures to keep the Alaskan pipeline from sinking into the  earth due to global warming.

Lastly, 'synthetic musk' is the thing in dryer sheets that make you want to make love to dryer sheets.

Diamonds Everything




Not only does the diamond trade control distribution, perpetuating the illusion of rarity to maintain their high price, and yet not only can we grow diamonds in a lab that are identical and superior to natural, geogenic diamonds; but humans themselves can actually become diamonds. Humans themselves can actually become diamonds. 

The "memorial diamond" refers to the use of a deceased person's body to create the carbon base for diamond formation, but there is nothing that says you can't do it while you're still alive.

Earth's gold came from colliding dead stars

"We estimate that the amount of gold produced and ejected during the merger of the two neutron stars may be as large as 10 moon masses - quite a lot of bling!" says lead author Edo Berger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

The team calculates that about one-hundredth of a solar mass of material was ejected by the gamma-ray burst, some of which was gold. By combining the estimated gold produced by a single short GRB with the number of such explosions that have occurred over the age of the universe, all the gold in the cosmos might have come from gamma-ray bursts.

'Diamane': Diamond film possible without the pressure

Perfect sheets of diamond a few atoms thick appear to be possible even without the big squeeze that makes natural gems.

Researchers at Rice University and in Russia have calculated a "phase diagram" for the creation of diamane. The diagram is a road map. It lays out the conditions – temperature, pressure and other factors – that would be necessary to turn stacked sheets of graphene into a flawless diamond lattice.

In the process, the researchers determined diamane could be made completely chemically, with no pressure at all, under some circumstances.

The scientists added a few layers of graphene – one-atom thick sheets of graphite – to a metal support and exposed the topmost layer to hydrogen. To their surprise, the reaction at the surface set off a domino effect that altered the structure of all the graphene layers from graphite-like to diamond-like.

The discovery was unexpected. The original goal of the experiment was to see if adding hydrogen could alter graphene's properties in a way that would make it useable in transistors, the fundamental building block of electronic devices. Instead, the scientists discovered that hydrogen binding resulted in the formation of chemical bonds between graphene and the platinum substrate.

...nitrogen atoms which can occupy two different spin states are injected into a small diamond. Every nitrogen defect is trapped in an optical resonator made of two mirrors. Via glass fibres, photons are coupled to the quantum system consisting of the resonator, the diamond and the nitrogen atom. This way, it is possible to read and manipulate the state of the quantum system without destroying the quantum properties of the spins in the diamond.

What began as research into a method to strengthen metals has led to the discovery of a new technique that uses a pulsing laser to create synthetic nanodiamond films and patterns from graphite, with potential applications from biosensors to computer chips.
"The biggest advantage is that you can selectively deposit nanodiamond on rigid surfaces without the high temperatures and pressures normally needed to produce synthetic diamond," said Gary Cheng, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Purdue University.

The technique works by using a multilayered film that includes a layer of graphite topped with a glass cover sheet. Exposing this layered structure to an ultrafast-pulsing laser instantly converts the graphite to an ionized plasma and creates a downward pressure. Then the graphite plasma quickly solidifies into diamond. The glass sheet confines the plasma to keep it from escaping, allowing it to form a nanodiamond coating.

"These are super-small diamonds and the coating is super-strong, so it could be used for high-temperature sensors," Cheng said.

His proposal, developed in partnership with scientists at the Technological University of Delft in the Netherlands, uses buried coils of copper to create an electrostatic field that attracts smog particles, creating a kind of halo of clean air above it. “It’s similar to how static electricity attracts your hair,” Roosegaarde says. “We charge the smog particles and suck them to the ground.”

He has also developed a mobile version which uses the same technology, but housed in a vertical totem-pole structure that sits atop a small temple-like pavilion, akin to those found in Beijing’s parks. It’s here where the real alchemy will happen. “We’re going to turn dust into diamonds,” Roosegaarde says. “We will condense a 1,000 cubic metres of smog down into a millimetre-cube carbon crystal – which we will set like a diamond on a ring.” When you buy a smog ring, he says, you’re effectively donating 1,000 cubic metres of clean air to the city.


“I like the idea that you can take a problem and turn it into something desirable,” Roosegaarde adds. “Of course it’s not a practical solution, but I’m hoping that smog jewellery will get people talking about the problem – and when they see these clear circles of blue sky above the parks, they’ll demand clean air for the whole city.”

The Inward Turn of the Narrative

Initially, the process of internalization of narrative consists in gradually bringing the narrated material down to earth and breathing into it a human soul. -The development of science in the 1600-1700, the telescope and the microscope, brought about a metaphysical insecurity (later Kahler references Gulliver’s Travels in this context)

1700’S

-satire served as an expression of revolt or a vehicle of moralistic intention and conversely [DeFoe’s] didactic intention sometimes served as a pretext for dwelling upon prohibited subjects

-the audience becomes less easily satisfired and a new strategy is required to hold the reader
