Same Same

This isn't about misinformation or memetic propagation; it's about multiple discovery, which I would rather call simultaneous discovery -- Calculus and the telephone come to mind. 

Incidentally, the publication of the research is a story all by itself. Only when Feuerriegel and his team submitted an initial version of the paper to Nature Human Behaviour did they become aware that a research group led by Jay Van Bavel from New York University had also submitted a paper -- in the same week, on the same topic, based on the same dataset from Upworthy.com, and with almost identical results.

This whole description is poorly sourced but well written: The concept of multiple discovery (also known as simultaneous invention) is the hypothesis that most scientific discoveries and inventions are made independently and more or less simultaneously by multiple scientists and inventors. The concept of multiple discovery opposes a traditional view—the "heroic theory" of invention and discovery. Multiple discovery is analogous to convergent evolution in biological evolution.

Robert K. Merton defined such "multiples" as instances in which similar discoveries are made by scientists working independently of each other.

Collective Computing and Manipulating Possibility Space


I'm watching a presentation by David Krakauer at the Santa Fe Institute. They do complexity theory, and he gives a good lecture

These pictures are screenshots of his presentation. I'm keeping them here for my own notes, because I thought there was some pretty deep stuff in here. 


First -- noise is essential to the system, because, as written here, it allows for the exploration of all possible states. How else are you going to optimize?? Noise delineates the operation-space.


Next, he gives us a picture of what I would refer to as a Lévy flight, but which simply be called "foraging behavior"; it's where you take a semi-random approach to exploring your environment, whether it's a field of blackberries or the information-space of artistic production. Artists do this throughout their career, where they spend a lot of time exploring -places, ideas, themes and then an abrupt and explosive execution of work that seems to crystallize out of all their recent experience. So the exploratory Lévy flight graph is paired with a more tightly integrated graph, the execution graph.  


Then he tells us that neurons are doing the same thing when we think, and especially when we make decisions. 


But this is where shit got crazy for me. Not only do our brains do this, but we as organisms in the larger superorganism of society are doing it also. 


He's saying that society is a circuitboard, where each of our relationships with each other creates a network of information flows, complete with bottlenecks and critical junctures, and evolving in real-time as it tries to optimize the flow of information. He is visualizing, and schematizing, the noosphere in action. 


And then the needle drops, and you remember why you like watching people like David Krakauer and places like the Sante Fe Institute: He calls these relationships "social circuits" and says we can predict the individual behaviors in the group: duration of a fight, who will fight who, who needs to be removed from the group for the fight to stop...

As we develop more sophisticated sensor networks, we will accumulate more and more data on bigger and bigger groups, and learn how to integrate that data into more complex network graphs like these.

And then we'll be able to predict adoption or rejection of social movements, of occupying military forces, of environmental regulations...

The private sector will have a half-assed understanding, yet sell it to all of us via third party business consultants who eat hype-flakes for breakfast, and we'll buy it all and use it and let it take over our lives, disrupt our hormones and dissolve our social fabric, even though it doesn't work (think AI today), while  governments will be years ahead, using it to gently manipulate its population into maintaining a society that disproportionately redistributes its resources to the already rich and powerful. The only way to respond is to get familiar in advance, and so thanks to people like this, we are. That is, if we're paying attention at all.

Mimetic Security 101


I ran network address through this bias-checking site, and we're all good. Just kidding; it's too popular and I can't get in.

Fake News is really called misinformation, for those who are keeping track of these things. And people are pulling out all the stops trying to get a hold on it. And by 'pulling out all the stops' I mean 'making algorithms do that sh**'.

Data scientist Zach Estela trained a neural network to scan a webpage and determine the type of news it promulgates. He forms the code for his News Bias Classifier using a couple projects already in the business of sniffing out these different information types. One is called OpenSources, and it's curated by humans whose purpose is to squash the Dubiosity Monster that is our current infostream. They read articles and tag them.

And check out their methods; Network Address (.blogspot) is a bit disheartened to see this particular method:
Step 1: Title/Domain Analysis.
If “.wordpress” “.com.co” appear in the title -- or any slight variation on a well known website-- this is usually a sign there is a problem.

But the Art teacher in me likes this:
Step 5: Aesthetic Analysis.
Like the style-guide, many fake and questionable news sites utilize very bad design. Are screens are cluttered and they use heavy-handed photo-shopping or born digital images?

Next source used for this fake news detector is a semantic analysis tool called Media Bias Fact Check dedicated to educating the public on media bias and deceptive news practices.

I was drawn to some of their terminology, well, the meta-terminology they use to check news/information sources on the web:

Loaded Language (Words): (also known as loaded terms or emotive language) is wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes. Such wording is also known as high-inference language or language persuasive techniques.
Purr Words:  words used to describe something that is favored or loved.
Snarl Words: words used when describing something that a person is against or hates.

Microbial Collective Memory and the Future of Human Sociothermodynamics

I guess the easiest way to describe this is “distributed memory?” I’ll cut directly from the article:

“When an entire population is observed, rather than individual cells, the bacteria appear to develop a kind of collective memory. In populations exposed to a warning event, survival rates upon a second exposure two hours after the warning are higher than in populations not previously exposed. Using computational modelling, the scientists explained this phenomenon in terms of a combination of two factors. Firstly, salt stress causes a delay in cell division, leading to synchronization of cell cycles; secondly, survival probability depends on the individual bacterial cell's position in the cell cycle at the time of the second exposure. As a result of the cell cycle synchronization, the sensitivity of the population changes over time. Previously exposed populations may be more tolerant to future stress events, but they may sometimes even be more sensitive than populations with no previous exposure.”

So what this is saying is that the population has a memory. Not the individual cells, but the population as a whole. In other words, a collective memory, distributed, remembers what happened last time, and behaves accordingly. Behaves? Cells don’t behave, or at least we don’t normally say things like that. But alas, cells – plural – behave.

In the trendy field of sociothermodynamics, people are treated not even like cells but like molecules bouncing around. This idea of a collective memory changes the way we may think about these “molecules.” It seems kind of silly, we know humans have memory – individual memories inside our brains and a form of collective memory in the form of … cultural products, i.e., art, architecture, writing, etc.? – and we have theories about collective memory and the Noosphere, via Carl Jung and Tielhard de Chardin. But there’s no real metrics behind this stuff, it’s all theory. For now. Combining models of sociothermodynamics with the kind of work presented above may shed new light on human behavior, we’ll see.
