Just here to point out that "I love my dog" is the epitome of politically neutral bumper sticker:

They conducted attitude surveys with paid volunteers ... The offending vehicle featured either no sticker or one of three bumper stickers: "Proud Democrat," "Proud Republican" or the neutral "I love my dog." Drivers were far more likely to honk after being cut off by a vehicle bearing a political bumper sticker, particularly one for the opposing political party.

Hand gestures that illustrate speech boost persuasiveness, study shows

I just like how they used 2000 TED talks as the dataset:

They analyzed 2,184 TED Talks using AI and automated video analysis, isolating more than 200,000 hand gestures into 10-second clips and comparing them against audience engagement metrics such as "likes" on social media, while controlling for factors like gender, occupation, language, video length and more; and they ran randomized experiments in which participants watched videos of sales pitches where speakers delivered identical scripts but varied their hand movements. Viewers then rated the speakers and the products being pitched. ... "Illustrators" might demonstrate the size of a fish while describing it, and "highlighters" might point to an object mentioned (like pointing at a word on the chalkboard?). ... "When people use illustrators, it increases viewers' perception of the speaker's competence. If a person uses their hands to visually illustrate what they're talking about, the audience perceives that this person has more knowledge and can make things easier to understand."

40% of MRI signals do not correspond to actual brain activity

According to the findings, there is no generally valid coupling between the oxygen content measured by MRI and neuronal activity. An increased fMRI signal is associated with reduced brain activity in around 40% of cases. At the same time, they observed decreased fMRI signals in regions with elevated activity. "This contradicts the long-standing assumption that increased brain activity is always accompanied by an increased blood flow to meet higher oxygen demand. Since tens of thousands of fMRI studies worldwide are based on this assumption, our results could lead to opposite interpretations in many of them."

Meta-analysis challenges the link between economic inequality and mental health

How can we explain that so many previous studies concluded that there was a harmful effect? The researchers identified a significant publication bias: studies with small samples reporting a detrimental effect of inequality on health were overrepresented in the literature, while null results more often remained unpublished. ... By correcting for this bias, the research team demonstrated that the estimated effect converges toward zero. Finally, a standardized tool for assessing the quality of existing studies showed that around 80% had methodological weaknesses leading to a high risk of bias.

For decades, this bias test looked inside minds - now its biggest blind spot is coming into focus

The implicit bias test - where you're shown pictures of faces and asked to sort them into categories like good or bad, and where a white person might call a white face "good" faster than a different color face, implying that person is biased against non-white faces. 

Oops.

Their findings, published in Nature Human Behavior, suggest that in some cases the test can mistakenly predict strong biases, when participants are simply cautious and responding slowly to avoid mistakes.

"Using racing diffusion models across 39 topics, we found that response caution explained significantly more variance in D-scores beyond decision ease. Response caution also best predicted explicitly reported biases."

Physicists refute famous 2025 study claiming daylight saving time poses severe health risks

"What the world read as scientific evidence against time change has turned out to be a mathematical illusion." (This is about the 2025 Lara Weed and Jamie M. Zeitzer of Stanford University article linking seasonal time changes to negative health outcomes.)

The original model computes the difference between the rhythm of the biological clock—the circadian rhythm, determined by the time at which body temperature is at its minimum—and the rhythm of Earth's rotation. According to the original authors, this difference represents the "regulatory circadian shifting necessary to stay synchronized with the outer world."

Global health effects were inferred from the annual sum of these daily readjustments. However, when performing this calculation, the authors consistently accumulated the magnitude of the readjustment, regardless of whether it was positive or negative. "The use of absolute readjustments instead of real readjustments is the critical error."

"What the authors did makes little sense; it is as if, while driving, we recorded every small adjustment made by moving the steering wheel back and forth to stay in the lane, but then added them all up in the same direction to report a large value instead of allowing them to compensate for each other. By their logic, maintaining a straight course with small left-and-right adjustments (what actually happens) would be the same as a car drifting further and further in one direction until it ends up facing the wrong way. This alone refutes the study's conclusions."

Consequently, the annual cumulative total of these readjustments was zero, even with the time change.

Plastic trash in bird nests documents the Anthropocene epoch

Plastic waste in bird nests can serve as a time capsule. Researchers of this study collected abandoned common coot nests from central Amsterdam on September 22, 2021, after the breeding season ended, and deconstructed the contents into piles of twigs and near-complete packaging materials. Each artificial item was then carefully examined for manufacturing dates, expiration dates, or any other markings that could reveal its age. The recovered packaging ranged from items like milk and avocados to chocolate packets and fast food wrappers dating back to 1996.

Is It Data

 
Surely every branch of science is special, and important, but some are more prone to credibility problems than others. Nutrition is one of them. Drug-based preventative health interventions are another. One suffers from almost totally unreliable survey reporting about what people eat, i.e., dirty data. The other suffers from a money problem, where money and power can make the data do whatever it wants, i.e., corruption. This is not to say that some branches of science are worthless, or absolutely untrustworthy, only that some need a stronger dose of skepticism than others. 

Researchers propose novel model to screen misreporting in dietary surveys

They found that 48% of food intake records in NHANES and 54% in NDNS had unrealistically low levels of energy intake [calories].

"This new model suggests that we should throw out large amounts of data, and nutritionists using dietary instruments may be unwilling to do that. However, continuing on just publishing erroneous data because it is too painful to acknowledge it's flawed, probably isn't the best way forward for nutrition science. I think as we go forward into the future many widely held beliefs that have been based on these problematical methods will need to be revised."

Experts challenge aspirin guidelines based on their undue reliance on a flawed trial

The American Heart Association (AHA)/American College of Cardiology (ACC) guidelines restricted aspirin to patients under 70, and more recently, the United States Preventive Services Task Force restricted aspirin use to patients under 60.

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine, and other distinguished collaborators, believe that both the AHA/ACC Task Force and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force were unduly influenced by the uninformative, not null, results of the Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) trial. Specifically, this trial did not provide reliable evidence that aspirin showed no benefit in the age groups they enrolled.

What a gut fungus reveals about symbiosis and allergy

The finding suggests that preclinical studies until now have overlooked a major influencer of mouse physiology:

In 2019, a team led by National Institutes of Health found that "wildling" lab mice raised with gut microbes like those of wild mice do a better job of modeling human immune responses than traditional lab mice. The lab, which participated in that study, found significantly higher levels of fungal DNA in the gut of these mice—magnitudes greater than previously observed in lab mice.

The team looked for evidence of the fungus in fecal samples and other material provided by pest-control companies in New York City and Los Angeles, and acquired samples from multiple research institutions that use or sell lab mice. Ultimately, they determined that K. pintolopesii is very common in wild mice, but also often present in lab mouse colonies without researchers knowing about its presence.

Science Doesn't Work For Free


This post is about how science works, and how it doesn't. 

Science is hard work, and requires lots of money, most of which comes from public funds and school tuitions. But some of it comes from people-like entities called corporations. Sometimes it's hard to tell what money goes where and from who, and we want to know because those who fund science are ultimately creating our reality.

Infiltrating academia is the most surreptitious, subversive, insidious (and let's face it - effective) way to control the minds of a population, every big industry (Big Agra, Big Rubber, Big Cheese, Big PFAS?) will spend more money manipulating reality by way of academic scientific pursuits than making their own products and services. 

This first article is from the Barabasi labs and uses network science, so the way they do their study is interesting:

Study reveals complex dynamics of philanthropic funding for US science

The IRS in recent years has made the tax form that nonprofits must file disclosing their revenue, expenditures, and other organizational information machine readable. Researchers then analyzed more than 3.6 million tax records filed by approximately 685,000 universities and research institutions between 2010 and 2019. 

"Some philanthropists make it very explicit that they give to their local communities. The Gates Foundation's biggest donation was to the University of Washington; they favor things in Seattle much more than they declared."

The authors also found that the amount of philanthropic dollars institutions receive is highly correlated to the degree of support provided by the National Science Foundation.

Additionally, private donors and nonprofits tend to support the same organizations over time, the analysis showed. with an 80% chance that a donor who gave to an organization two years in a row would support it the following year; for funding relationships that had lasted seven years, the probability is 90%.

Such a tool could enhance the public's understanding of the impact of philanthropy on science and help researchers gain access and awareness of the philanthropic options that could advance their work.

Next - Science depends on a written record of experiments and results. Maintaining the record of science, i.e., scientific journals, is done almost exclusively by the private industry. Sometimes, both the scientsits and the publishers have an incentive to NOT realize they're doing something wrong (Upton Sinclair: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it").

Here's a story about how bad science happens, and what it can do to the rest of us. This is about retractions:

University of Minnesota retracts pioneering studies in stem cells, Alzheimer's disease

Dr. Karen Ashe and colleagues gained global attention in 2006 when they found amyloid beta star 56 as a molecular target in the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Colleagues at other institutions struggled to replicate their findings, which prompted others to look closer at the images of cellular or molecular activity in mice on which their findings were based.

Verfaillie and colleagues corrected the Nature paper in 2007, which contained an image of cellular activity in mice that appeared identical to an image in a different paper that supposedly came from different mice. The U then launched an investigation over complaints of image duplications or manipulations in more of Verfaillie's papers.

It eventually cleared her of misconduct, but blamed her for inadequate training and oversight and claimed that a junior researcher had falsified data in a similar study published in the journal Blood.

The journal Nature stated that the paper contained "excessive manipulation, including splicing, duplication and the use of an eraser tool" to edit the images.

(This is almost 20 years later, and after lots of people invested lots of money in chasing this result.)

Less sensational, or perhaps more sensational, is this absolute bomb - dropped on all of us who've been obediently following the one-drink-a-day advice for about one generation since it first came out.

The worldwide public health community has been scratching its head over this since it emerged from the data, many years ago. People who drink once a day seem to live longer than people who drink none. Therefore, one drink a day must be good for you! Hmmm. Turns out the only people in a large population who we can get to serve as a "normal healthy person who doesn't ever drink" is a person who's suffering from former substance abuse, and abstaining from alcohol not for any other reason than the fact that it's going to ruin their life. And those people have a built-in health burden that makes them a bad reference point for a "normal healthy person", and then makes all the rest of us look less healthy when compared to them.  It's called the Former Drinker Paradox, or a number of other names, and it's likely going to be the canonical case study in public health research courses for decades to come.

Study debunks link between moderate drinking and longer life

Reminder - "lower quality" studies, with older participants, no distinction between former drinkers and lifelong abstainers, linked moderate drinking to greater longevity. So moderate drinkers were compared with "abstainer" and "occasional drinker" groups that included some older adults who had quit or cut down on drinking because they'd developed any number of health conditions. "That makes people who continue to drink look much healthier by comparison."

"If you look at the weakest studies," Stockwell said, "that's where you see health benefits."

A bioinformatics professor at Brigham Young University in the United States told AFP that he had been asked to peer review the study in March.

After realizing it was "100 percent plagiarism" of his own study - but with the text seemingly rephrased by an AI program - he rejected the paper.

He said he was "shocked" to find the plagiarized work had simply been published elsewhere, in a new Wiley journal called Proteomics.

More than 13,000 papers were retracted last year, by far the most in history, according to the US-based group Retraction Watch. The paper in question in this writeup, however, has not yet been retracted.
Note: usually I try to add the academic paper here at the bottom, and which is usually taken from the bottom of the writeup, but in this case I think there is no paper, and the bottom of the writeup points to ... the journal that reprinted the obviously fake paper. Proteomics. Remember the name. But also remember that the science aggregator website (phys.org) probably uses some level of automation (remember when we used to call AI simply "automation"?) to place the article information at the bottom of the writeup, explaining how this happened here. This is the future. 

Paper mills: The 'cartel-like' companies behind fraudulent scientific journals

Paper Mills - By paying around €180 to €5,000 (approximately US$197–$5,472), a person can have their name listed as the author of research paper, without having to painstakingly do research and write the results.

And this is how:
  • plagiarize other published articles
  • contain false and stolen data
  • include engineered and duplicated images
  • rewrite scientific articles using generative artificial intelligence 
  • translate published articles from other languages into English
  • sell authorship slots before an article is accepted, guaranteed to publish
  • offer fake peer review services to convince potential buyers
  • bribing rogue journal editors with as  much as $20,000 [link]
  • unusual collaboration patterns: An article on the activity of ground beetles attacking crops in Kazakhstan, for example, is written by authors who are neither affiliated with institutions in Kazakhstan nor experts in insects or agriculture. The authors' backgrounds are suspiciously heterogeneous, ranging from anesthesia, dentistry, to biomedical engineering. 
Journals rarely state outright that a retraction is due to paper mill fraud, so Retraction Watch data as of May 2024 only recorded 7,275 retractions of articles related to the paper mill out of a total of 44,000 retractions recorded. In fact, it is estimated that up to 400,000 paper mill articles have infiltrated scientific literature over the past two decades.

Even the survey participants themselves can't resist!

Survey participants are turning to AI, putting academic research results into question

"AI use has probably caused scholars and researchers and editors to pay increased scrutiny to the quality of their data."

The authors surveyed about 800 participants on Prolific (like Mechanical Turk) to learn how they engage with LLMs. All had taken surveys on Prolific at least once; 40% had taken seven surveys or more in the last 24 hours. 

The authors also noted that these responses included more "dehumanizing" language when describing Black Americans, Democrats, and Republicans. In contrast, LLMs consistently used more neutral, abstract language, suggesting that they may approach race, politics, and other sensitive topics with more detachment.

Participants who were newer to Prolific or identified as male, Black, Republican, or college-educated, were more likely to say they'd used AI writing assistance.

Societal inflection point: To see how human-crafted answers differ from AI-generated ones, the authors looked at data from three studies fielded on gold-standard samples before the public release of ChatGPT in November 2022.

Doing the Hard Stuff


When you wonder how science works:

Lego-pushing bumblebees reveal insect collaboration dynamics

In the study, pairs of bumblebees were trained in two different cooperative tasks. Bees learned to simultaneously push a Lego block in the middle of an arena, or to simultaneously push a door at the end of a transparent double tunnel to gain access to rewarding nectar.

Bumblebees' behaviors suggest their efforts towards solving the cooperative tasks were influenced by the presence, absence, and movement direction of their partner. When their partner was delayed, bees tended to take longer than controls to initiate pushing and were more likely to push only when their partner pushed with them.

In short, bees trained on cooperative tasks seemed to wait for their partner. The bumblebees in the control group, which had been trained alone, did not show similar behavior.

Cat collaboration demonstrates what it takes to trust robots

Cat Royale is a unique collaboration between Computer Scientists from the University of Nottingham and artists at Blast Theory who worked together to create a multispecies world centered around a be-spoke enclosure in which three cats and a robot arm coexist for six hours a day during a twelve-day installation as part of an artist-led project. The installation was launched in 2023 at the World Science Festival in Brisbane, Australia and has been touring since, it has just won a Webby award for its creative experience.

The robot arm offering activities to make the cats happier, these included dragging a "mouse" toy along the floor, raising a feather "bird" into the air, and even offering them treats to eat.

"It explores the question of what it takes to trust a robot to look after our loved ones and potentially ourselves."

Enquiring Minds


Science does weird things sometimes, especially when you're not really sure what it does. Like, does science figure things out, or does it make things more confusing? Does it prove things right, or does it prove things wrong? Does it discover, or does it forget? Man I'm already confused.

Hard to believe, years later: "Research on this question is still in its infancy," explains Stoyan.

Real science, good science, takes time. And it takes time because it needs people to correct each other, over and over, until we all agree that we're all right. 

As for this one, I am not statistician, but even I can see why this was a dumb study:

Stoyan and Chiu used the same geostatistical data as Worobey and colleagues. These are the residential addresses of the first 155 coronavirus cases. These addresses were entered as points on a map. In the Science article, this dot pattern is compared with dot patterns generated by simulation, finding significant differences. However, since these artificial dot patterns are incorrectly chosen, the test used must always reject the hypothesis that a location other than the market is the epicenter.

In other words, Worobey and colleagues have excluded locations other than the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market from the outset. However, other locations in the vicinity of the market could also be possible candidates: A large railway station and a huge shopping complex with hotels and restaurants.

Study examines aerodynamic performance of nylon shuttlecocks

Shuttlecocks, also known as birdies or birds, are traditionally made from duck feathers, but nylon shuttlecocks have become more widely used because of their superior durability. Their flight behavior, however, is far different from that of traditional feather birdies.

In Physics of Fluids, a trio of scientists in India explored the aerodynamic performance of nylon shuttlecocks at various flight speeds. Through computational analyses based on two-way fluid-structure interactions, the team coupled equations governing air flow with equations determining skirt deformation of a shuttlecock in flight.

The study's computational results confirm experimental measurements, explaining the phenomenology of why a duck feather shuttlecock does not deform as much as a nylon shuttlecock - and why the flight of each at high speed is quite different.

Interstellar signal linked to aliens was actually just a truck

Facts vs Fandom:
After a meteor entered Earth's atmosphere over the Western Pacific in January 2014, the event was linked to ground vibrations recorded at a seismic station in Papua New Guinea's Manus Island. In 2023, materials at the bottom of the ocean near where the meteor fragments were thought to have fallen were identified as of "extraterrestrial technological" (alien) origin.

Sound waves thought to be from a 2014 meteor fireball north of Papua New Guinea were almost certainly vibrations from a truck rumbling along a nearby road.

Materials follow the 'Rule of Four,' but scientists don't know why yet

"Rare example of a scientific paper describing a negative result"; it happens.

The two collections of materials science databases include over 80,000 electronic structures of experimental as well as predicted materials; scientists noticed that around 60 percent of structures in both databases have primitive unit cells made out of a multiple of 4 atoms. The scientists named this recurrence the "Rule of Four" and started looking for an explanation.

"The first question we asked was whether the software used to 'primitivize' the unit cell had done it correctly, and the answer was yes."

"We could expect to find that all the materials following this Rule of Four included silicon (which has a coordination number of 4)," says Gazzarini. "But again, they did not."

"The materials that are most abundant in nature should be the most energetically favored, which means the most stable ones, those with negative formation energy. But what we saw with classic computational methods was that there was no correlation between the Rule of Four and negative formation energies."

A machine-learning expert at the University of Wisconsin developed an algorithm to group structures according to their atomic properties and look at formation energies within classes of materials sharing some chemical similarities. But again, this method did not provide a way to distinguish the Rule-of-Four compliant materials from the non-compliant ones.

Similarly, the abundance of multiple of fours does not even correlate with highly symmetric structures but rather with low symmetries and loosely packed arrangements.

In the end, the resulting article in npj Computational Materials is the rare example of a scientific paper describing a negative result: the researchers could only describe the phenomenon and rule out several possible causes, without finding one.

New research confirms plastic production is directly linked to plastic pollution

Every 1% increase in plastic production is associated with a 1% increase in plastic pollution in the environment.

Sometimes you wonder why we even need science. But then you remember that global megacorporations spend lots of money and lots of effort to hide, confuse and redirect attention and scientific investigation away from this stuff:

56 global companies are responsible for more than half of all branded plastic pollution.

The Coca-Cola Company was responsible for 11% of branded waste, followed by PepsiCo (5%), Nestlé (3%), Danone (3%), and Altria/Philip Morris International (2%). The top companies identified produce food, beverage, or tobacco products.

The five-year analysis used #BreakFreeFromPlastic brand audit data from 1,576 audit events across 84 countries. Brand audits are citizen science initiatives in which volunteers conduct waste clean-ups and document the brands found on the pollution collected. Over five years, more than 200,000 volunteers submitted data through Break Free From Plastic or 5 Gyres' TrashBlitz app.

Megadata vs Magadata


The death of open access mega-journals?

"...explosive growth of mega-journals may be accompanied by the fall of some previously prestigious journals."

Many newer mega-journals have begun specializing in discipline-focused journals that are publishing faster and in greater volume than traditional journals can keep up with.

And because getting more citations and publishing more stories in a current year helps lift the impact factor, self-citing journals are skewing the imapct factor of the journal. 

Using an internally-developed AI tool to help identify outlier characteristics that indicate that a journal may no longer meet quality criteria, the Web of Science has removed the impact factor of nearly two dozen journals, including one of the world's largest, the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Many of the journals published by Hindawi and two by MDPI have had their impact factor ratings removed, likely reflecting concerns with the integrity of the publishing process.
  • Hiring "guest editors" who may not be reviewing studies in their field of expertise
  • Quick turnaround times from submitting a paper to publication (200 hundred days in traditional publishing, 30 for Hindawi)
  • Hindawi was purchased by Wiley publishing in 2021 for $300 million and has already had to deal with thousands of retractions after uncovering thousands of fraudulent papers filled with off-subject citations.

Megajournals may perpetuate and accentuate an already dysfunctional system of scientific evaluation and publication,” they write. The pay-for-publication model creates an incentive for authors trying to meet institutions’ quotas for publications, and “megajournals may drain an already strained pool of reviewers from traditional journals.” Ioannidis calls for more research comparing the quality of peer review in megajournals and traditional ones, and he suggests institutions and funders reward researchers for studies that are transparent and rigorous.

Meta things -- they wanted to see if artificial intelligence could write a fabricated research paper and then investigate how best to detect it, so they ran their AI-generated text through a free, online, AI rephrasing tool -- the consensus unanimously flipped to "likely human," suggesting we need better AI detection tools, since these technologies could be used to write entire studies with false data, nonexistent participants and meaningless results.

Pandemic Surprise


Serendipitous backyard experiment shines light on producing polymers

With the COVID shutdown, the scientists at QUT's Soft Matter Materials Group, like the rest of the world, switched to working from home which meant limited time in the university research labs.

Where safe and practicable, the scientists looked for ways to take their work home with them.

This situation inspired the researchers to continue their experiment using sunlight and Dr. Delafresnaye installed the experiment on her outdoor barbecue table and left it in what the research paper calls "Australian sunshine" for four hours.

It's an unprecedented methodology for the production of microspheres, which are used in a wide range of applications including drug delivery, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and paints. Normally they use a laser or LED to start and stop a reaction; this uses sunshine.

Most preprint studies of COVID-19 hold up through peer-review: study

Comparing preprint manuscripts to the eventual published versions of the individual studies, about 90 percent of those 1,606 data points were still in the text after peer review. 

(fyi the National Institutes of Health has promoted preprint manuscripts as a way to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery.)
