The State of the Art in the Arts and Design


These images are two different iterations of a prompt which have been abbreviated to "The Inside of a Pet Store", coming from Stable Diffusion 1.5 and archived on Lexica [link]

Can we just appreciate this for a second. It's supposed to be the inside of a pet store, but honestly your guess is as good as mine. Take a good look at what's going on here. Take a look around, but not too hard, except what's in all the packages; don't zoom in on the packages. Also pay no attention to the quasi-Shiba Inu cut-out floating in the upper right, but do note how it's positioned in the picture exactly how the original doge meme would have been placed. This image is a meta-cultural artifact.

This also reminds me of how every once in a while a pinterest logo will show up in a random picture, because after google bought pinterest and then reverse engineered all image search results to point to their own soft-paywalled repository (paid for by your personal data), so the weight of images scraped off the internet that also had a pinterest logo was so high, it just randomly appears in any image. These are the things, the quirks, the behaviors, the criticisms, that we should be holding in our minds as we interface with the ghost in the machine. Yet all we seem to be doing is perpetuating ghost stories.

On Language, Prediction and Power


Big Bonus on the Words Front, Dan Jurafsky professor of computer science and linguistics:

Vehicle stop study illuminates importance of officer's first words

A law enforcement officer's first 45 words during a vehicle stop with a Black driver can often indicate how the stop will end. "There's a clear linguistic signature to escalated vehicle stops. Simply put, the officer starts off with a command rather than a reason in escalated stops."

They analyzed audio recordings and transcripts from police-worn body cameras from 577 vehicle stops that occurred over the course of a month in a medium-sized, racially diverse city in the U.S. 

The study found that the stops ending in escalation were almost three times more likely to begin with the officer issuing a command to the driver and 2 1/2 times less likely to provide a reason for the stop.

"We found that stops that end escalated, often start escalated," Rho said.

But wait (great work here by the way, ambitious study) -- 

During the second study, researchers played the audio from the traffic stops in the first study to a nationally representative sample of 188 Black male U.S. citizens ranging in age, region, education, and political ideology. 

Black male participants predicted that 84% of stops that involved an officer giving orders with no reasons would escalate, and worried about force being used in more than 80% of the stops that involved orders and no reasons as compared to only 47% of stops that involved reasons with no orders.

"The most common way for the average citizen to encounter law enforcement is through vehicle stops," Rho said.

Neuromimetics


Nobody uses the word neuromimetic, but that's what it is. 

Instead, we're calling these new computer chips neuromorphic, which you would think means that their design is shaped (morphed) like the brain. Except that's not what it means -- instead neuromorphic computer chips ----behave---- like the brain. I would call that mimetic. 

This post is a collection of news articles about the next generation in computing -- no, not GPUs, I know we're just getting familiar with those, but the next thing is already here. This next, next thing coming is a TPU (tensor processing unit), and it's got something to do with the memory being on the chip, so you don't need to go across the bus to an external memory. Sorry, not a computer scientist here, just trying to get the basic idea.

These new chips can create a new type of architecture that's really good at really large datasets, which we happen to have (digital content on track to equal half Earth's mass by 2245).

These chips act more like synapses, hence the term neuromorphic. I'll be drifting in and out of this topic specifically, since some of these are just regular old GPU-based neural networks, which as you would guess by their names, are a kind of neuromorphic hardware in themselves. Also, cerebral organoids. Less mimetic. They're made of actual brain tissue, but we can't talk about brain-like things without talking about those.

I get confused when someone talks about "artificial" neural network, because I thought the whole thing was an artificial brain to begin with. But alas --

"This low energy consumption is made possible by inter-neuronal communication by means of very simple electrical impulses, so-called spikes. The information is thereby encoded not only by the number of spikes, but also by their time-varying patterns. "You can think of it like Morse code. The pauses between the signals also transmit information," Maass explains.

'Edge of chaos' opens pathway to artificial intelligence discoveries

An artificial network of nanowires can be tuned to respond in a brain-like way when electrically stimulated. Keeping the network of nanowires in a brain-like state "at the edge of chaos", it performed tasks at an optimal level. Electrical signals put through this network automatically find the best route for transmitting information. And this architecture allows the network to 'remember' previous pathways through the system.

This, they say, suggests the underlying nature of neural intelligence is physical, and their discovery opens an exciting avenue for the development of artificial intelligence.

Team presents brain-inspired, highly scalable neuromorphic hardware

Neuromorphic hardware has attracted a great deal of attention because of its artificial intelligence functions, but consuming ultra-low power of less than 20 watts by mimicking the human brain. To make neuromorphic hardware work, a neuron that generates a spike when integrating a certain signal, and a synapse remembering the connection between two neurons are necessary, just like the biological brain. However, since neurons and synapses constructed on digital or analog circuits occupy a large space, there is a limit in terms of hardware efficiency and costs. Since the human brain consists of about 1011 neurons and 1014 synapses, it is necessary to improve the hardware cost in order to apply it to mobile and IoT devices.

To solve the problem, the research team mimicked the behavior of biological neurons and synapses with a single transistor, and co-integrated them onto an 8-inch wafer. The manufactured neuromorphic transistors have the same structure as the transistors for memory and logic that are currently mass-produced. In addition, the neuromorphic transistors proved for the first time that they can be implemented with a "Janus structure' that functions as both neuron and synapse, just like coins have heads and tails.

Reappraisal of Moore's law through chip density

"DRAM chips as model organisms for the study of technological evolution."

Kevin Kelly has entered the chat. When I hear people talking about computer chips as evolving organisms, I think about What Technology Wants, the 2010 book by Kevin Kelly, where he says that technology is a lifeform that evolves, and also one which manipulates us for its own evolution. 

But the real reason we're posting this article:

The next growth spurt in transistor miniaturization and computing capability is now overdue, they say.

They're saying that Moore's Law is about to jump again, and the DRAM chips, which aren't too much different from neuromorphic architectures, are about to help us make that jump.

Artificial brain networks simulated with new quantum materials

By combining new supercomputing materials with specialized oxides, the researchers successfully demonstrated the backbone of networks of circuits and devices that mirror the connectivity of neurons and synapses in biologically based neural networks.

"Neuromorphic computing is inspired by the emergent processes of the millions of neurons, axons and dendrites that are connected all over our body in an extremely complex nervous system." -UC president and physicist Robert Dynes

The researchers' innovation was based on joining two types of quantum substances—superconducting materials based on copper oxide and metal insulator transition materials that are based on nickel oxide. They created basic "loop devices" that could be precisely controlled at the nano-scale with helium and hydrogen, reflecting the way neurons and synapses are connected. Adding more of these devices that link and exchange information with each other, the simulations showed that eventually they would allow the creation of an array of networked devices that display emergent properties like an animal's brain.

GPUs open the potential to forecast urban weather for drones and air taxis

This paper is interesting; it talks about microscale airflow patterns in cities with high buildings. But I thought it would be a good idea to just repaste this explanation right here, for people who haven't noticed --

CPUs excel at performing multiple tasks, including control, logic, and device-management operations, but their ability to perform fast arithmetic calculations is limited. GPUs are the opposite. Originally designed to render 3D video games, GPUs are capable of fewer tasks than CPUs, but they are specially designed to perform mathematical calculations very rapidly.

And just wait, because TPUs are right on their heels.

Intel launches its next-generation neuromorphic processor—so, what’s that again?

Unlike a normal processor, there's no external RAM. Instead, each neuron has a small cache of memory dedicated to its use. This includes the weights it assigns to the inputs from different neurons, a cache of recent activity, and a list of all the other neurons that spikes are sent to.

Other changes are very specific to spiking neural networks. The original processor's spikes, as mentioned above, only carried a single bit of information. In Loihi 2, a spike is an integer, allowing it to carry far more information and to influence how the recipient neuron sends spikes. (This is a case where Loihi 2 might be somewhat less like the neurons it's mimicking in order to perform calculations better.)

Hiddenite: A new AI processor for reduced computational power consumption based on a cutting-edge neural network theory

Hiddenite: hidden neural network inference tensor engine.

It's an "accelerator chip" that "does neural networks better" by being better at pruned neural networks, which are also called "hidden neural networks", and by reducing memory needs, which is a big deal in the age of big data. 

And how often do we get to see RNGs in practical application in the news -- "The Hiddenite architecture (Fig. 2) offers three-fold benefits to reduce external memory access and achieve high energy efficiency. The first is that it offers the on-chip weight generation for re-generating weights by using a random number generator. This eliminates the need to access the external memory and store the weights."

They're also four-dimensional (4D) parallel processors. 

I don't see the words neuromorphic or TPU in here, but I imagine it's not too distantly related.

Facebook demands academics disable ad-targeting data tool

Academics, journalists and First Amendment lawyers are rallying behind New York University researchers in a showdown with Facebook over its demand that they halt the collection of data showing who is being micro-targeted by political ads on the world's dominant social media platform.

The researchers say the disputed tool is vital to understanding how Facebook has been used as a conduit for disinformation and manipulation.

"Ad Observer"....special plug-in for Chrome and Firefox browsers used by 6,500 volunteers across the United States...lets researchers see which ads are shown to each volunteer...the tool violates Facebook rules prohibiting automated bulk collection of data from the Facebook website

Experian - Credit agency told to stop sharing data without consent

The two-year investigation was prompted by a complaint from the campaign group Privacy International.

It found that Experian and two other credit reference agencies - Equifax and TransUnion - did a significant amount of "invisible" processing of data, meaning that people did not know it was happening.

The report found that the agencies had access to the data of almost every adult in the UK, which was then "screened, traded, profiled, enriched, or enhanced to provide direct marketing services".

This processing resulted in "products that were used by commercial organisations, political parties and charities to find new customers and build profiles about people", the investigation stated.

"The data broking sector is a complex eco-system where information appears to be traded widely without consideration for transparency, giving millions of adults in the UK little of no choice or control over their personal data," said Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham.

Not So Fast


Human cultural evolution found to be just as slow as biological evolution

I can't read the paper for paywall, so I'm copying Bob Yirka's review at phys.org:
To compare the rate at which human culture changes to rates of biological evolution, the researchers assigned variables to characteristics of several cultural artifacts—whether or not guitars were the major instrument in the average song, for example, or how car features such as size and power change over time, or the way references are tagged in scientific papers. Similar metrics for measuring the speed of evolutionary change have already been identified and measured by multiple scientific studies. The researchers chose to use some of the most well-known, such as the study of finches on the Galapagos Islands and moths changing color during the early industrial period in England in response to soot-covered tree bark.
The comparative analysis involved applying the Haldanes metric—it showed that human culture changed at very nearly the same pace as biological evolution. The researchers even suggest that cultural artifacts in a given society could be viewed as similar to organisms living in a given environment. Artifacts such as scientific papers, they note, when carried into society at large, either survive and become a part of the culture, or they die—just like natural selection. They acknowledge that there are instances in both cultural and biological evolution that change very quickly, such as smartphones or finch beaks, but overall, the rates come out nearly evenly.
I put this here to remind us that Kevin Kelly was saying the same thing in his 2010 book What Technology Wants, which said that Technology (as a cultural artifact) is an extension of the Tree of Life, and shares many similarities with a living organism under the pressures of natural selection.

Public acceptance of climate change affected by word usage

Public acceptance of climate change's reality may have been influenced by the rate at which words moved from scientific journals into the mainstream, according to anthropologist Michael O'Brien, dean of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Missouri. A recent study of word usage in popular literature by O'Brien and his colleagues documented how the usage of certain words related to climate change has risen and fallen over the past two centuries. Understanding how word usage affects public acceptance of science could lead to better science communication and a more informed public.

"Journalists must explain scientific terms in ways people can understand and thereby ease the movement of those terms into general speech. That can be a slow process. Several words related to climate change diffused into the popular vocabulary over a 30-50 year timeline."

O'Brien's study found that, by 2008, several important terms in the discussion of climate change had entered popular literature from technical obscurity in the early 1900s. These terms included: Biodiversity – the degree of variation in life forms within a given area Holocene – the current era of the Earth's history, which started at the end of the last ice age Paleoclimate –the prehistoric climate, often deduced from ice cores, tree rings and pollen trapped in sediments Phenology – the study of how climate and other environmental factors influence the timing of events in organisms' life cycles. Not every term was adopted at the same rate or achieved the same degree of popularity. Biodiversity, for example, came into popular use quickly in only a few years in the late 80s and early 90s. Other terms, like Holocene or phenology  have taken decades and are still relatively uncommon.

On Value and the Palimpsest

What we see is actually another overlay on the palimpsest of a personal history of art-viewing. When the work, coming through the eyes, presently, combined with the palimpsest coming from the memory, produces a new sensation, glowingly harmonious, or alarmingly disjointing, then, a work ascertains value.

Then, it is an achievement.

And when enough individuals experience this and communicate it through a network until it fixes itself in the cultural matrix, it becomes another layer itself of the palimpsest, adding more standards and complexities to the criteria of any future work.

On Snobbery

“Are we justified in attributing so much importance to verifying “originals” and distinguishing them from duplicates that are much like them and for many practical purposes fulfill the same functions? I believe we are. Just as it is in the interest of the human potential to extend the knowledge of the truth beyond the limits already attained, there is merit in pursuing aesthetic achievement to its peaks. We know from much evidence that art comes at all levels, from the poorest to the highest, and that therefore we need to distinguish all these levels from one another by their objective characteristics. Precisely because all works of art are basically duplicates of one another in that they are all engaged in the same task, it is possible and necessary to compare their levels of excellence. Those distinctions, however, are not readily apparent to everybody. A cheap popular song, novel, or picture may provide a full aesthetic experience within the narrow horizon of poorly prepared recipients, and it takes the persistent best efforts of the best experts to come ever closer to the recognition of the highest achievements.

Random: what we call the ‘artworld’ is just ‘good things worthy of duplication’.


On Snobbery/the remix

When young generations have admired this not-then-known forgery, if the aesthetic value has not changed, we say – “What harm has it done?” But, what is the purpose of art? Simply to entertain the senses?

Surely this cannot be what compels the artist, beyond conscious understanding or control, to create.

No, art does more than this. It is a pairing of the hemispheres, a mapping of non-observable ideas and emotions onto a consensually “recognizable” (cognitively recognizable) structure. That structure, however, is not Music, or Art, or even the subsets, such as Modern or Expressionist. The structure is the entirety of the artworld, which itself is an interpretation of the world-in-total, as that which one person or a select group is immersed in.

Ultimately, art, in any form, is both instruction and expression. The performer of the ritual (be it music or art or dance) is expressing both himself (or itself in the case of collective such as an orchestra) and the instruction of the work. And who is held accountable for the instruction, then? Even today, many artists will deflect credit for the authorship of their work. The art creates itself through the artist.

The unconscious action of the artist, as their ephormations iterate within a population, are held in-check by some other force.

For art to be of service, and thus of value, and for the population to receive proper instruction in the face of continually changing and complexifying environment, there must be some criteria by which the bad examples fall out, or are filtered out. Without this filter, society would fail to adapt, and art would find itself useless and consequently extinct from the human experience.

It is really no wonder, by this explanation heretofore, why we must remove the forgery from the museum wall. In a painting, the instructions are embedded into the expression – inextricably. For a piece of written music, the instruction is removed, or disembodied from the expression, so it is not the same. By “appreciating” an aesthetically powerful work of art that is known to have been whittled down by the algorithm of artificial selection, artists and critics and institutions and patrons, etc., there is something about the forged painting that is giving corrupt instructions (via the mismatched expression). And a pure expression it isn’t, for it is more an interpretation of a painting or a painter – someone else’s recursion, not yours – it is already once more removed. So young generations may enjoy and be moved by the aesthetic beauty, but as a whole, the interaction (between art and person) is not taking place as intended.

And note, it is not the artist who intends the interaction to be one way or another, but art itself, or the society, or the artworld that selects it. The youth, then, in this case, is being corrupted. It is the job of snobbery to police the proper transmission of artistic instruction. For those who do it well, snobs are only doing their duty.

Culture Fail?

I was afforded the experience last night to watch Ancient Aliens (the History Channel documentary) with some friends. After many attempts to conjure Carl Sagan’s Baloney Detection Kit, I was faced with a stark reality: It’s not a person’s belief in aliens that should frighten us, it is the consistent, thought-disarming default solution to complex phenomena. Aliens in the [memetic*] sense has been re-calibrated by the Internet as a kind of dead-end, dysfunctional thought syndrome that is still prevalent in many, many people in The West.

Now don’t get me wrong, I like Aliens. I like to dream about what they look like, where they come from, how they get here, and what they want out of life. Stranger in a Strange Land is on my bookshelf, no doubt, albeit right next to Asimov’s The Universe. I also love H.G. Wells’ galvanizing memesis of “little green men” (though he did not actually describe them as such), but am more endeared with its hysterical effect, and meta-effect in the dispute over the extent of the hysteria, on population when presented by Orson Welles via radio broadcast in 1938; disregard, or not, the confusing Wells/Welles coincidence herein.

So, for the record, I come in peace.

Check the history of the word “aliens”, in the extra-terrestrial sense; the word’s inception is quite recent. I will fuzz-it-up here, for the sake of effect, as well as for mnemonic purposes, and place this inception date of the word (but more importantly the concept) in the public psyche, as concurrent with our entrance into the atomic age, the modern era, the postwar world – the second half of the 1900’s. It would be interesting to see what correlates here join with the fall of the influence of Christianity in Western society.

Though it should be argued that a primary “goal” of religion is to guide us in the ways of things we yet understand (not in understanding, of course, but in coping with not-understanding), it also provides answers; that is, it helps to satisfy the awakening of the rational mind of our more animal-inclined selves. “Aliens” (in the conventional sense, not the internet-meme sense) delivers us an equitable service. For a world where the “legitimacy” of Religion* comes under increasing scrutiny, it seems natural that something like Aliens would appear in the popular culture. 

*I use quotes here because  the authenticity of religion is ultimately non-rational in nature, and thus impervious to scrutiny and hence delegitimization.

Respective to the Christian narrative, they [aliens] are more significant in a new world of space travel and aeronautics and unprecedented organization at super-national levels (which queries for the presence of even higher levels of organization, below God, perhaps, but above the Axis powers, for example). "Aliens" also functions as an unintentional reservoir for the misplaced confusion and unresolved conflict of religiously skeptical yet patriotic American citizens exposed to the "if you're not Christian then you must be Communist" idea of their Coldwar culture.

And so, finally, it is funny how the possible supplanting of Religion by Aliens, comes via undeniable consequences of Science on society (via advances in aeronautics, space exploration and communications technology), and yet those who believe can only do so in denial themselves of the basic tenets of science.
