'Implosion carving' shrinks 3D photonic devices 2,000-fold for visible-light computing

They figured out how to create vacancies at any site across a material and then shrink it to about 1/2,000 of its original volume, making nanostructures with feature sizes with a resolution less than 100 nanometers; because that resolution is smaller than the wavelength of light, the devices can bend light in specific ways that allow them to perform optical computations.

Novel origami pattern turns flat sheets into load-bearing 3D technology

It's a "doubly curved lens box", also called a flat tendon-driven origami metamaterial with stiffness reprogrammability. ... Starting from a desired curved shape (such as a sphere, torus or vase-like surface), the researchers used differential geometry—mathematical theories for origami tiling and developable surfaces—followed by numerical optimization to compute the exact crease pattern needed so that, once folded and locked, the origami shell would match the target geometry. ... They next laser-cut and folded paperboard sheets into these patterns, assembled them into shells, and embedded thin cables ("tendons") through specific points. "By tightening or loosening the tendons, we measured how the stiffness changed and showed that the shells could go from saggy and flexible to rigid and resistant to twisting and bending."

A low-tech solution to the 6G problem—metacrystal panels offer cheap way to guide wireless signals around corners

Higher-frequency channels of 6G communications are more easily blocked by walls, people and other obstacles. Metacrystals are passive, 3D-printed smart panels that can shape wireless signals without electronics, a power supply or active tuning.

Unlike many existing intelligent surfaces, which often perform only one task for one signal direction, the panels can handle several incoming waves at the same time, operate over different frequency bands simultaneously, work in reflection or transmission mode, and even fully absorb unwanted signals.

Rising heat and humidity challenge energy-efficient data center cooling worldwide

They assessed historical and projected temperatures and humidity levels around the world and compared them with the conditions required for "direct air free cooling," wherein naturally cold outside air is brought in to cool a building or equipment.

"We found that periods of time when temperature and humidity exceed recommended operating thresholds for direct air-free cooling are becoming more frequent and lasting longer in many regions"

One of their key findings is that the largest changes are not always seen in average conditions. In several regions, worst-day conditions are intensifying more rapidly than average conditions, indicating that environmental stress is becoming increasingly concentrated in rare but consequential events.

To Brain is Human


It's a great time in the history of humanity to still have a brain. 

Chimeric brain models can help bridge the gap between animal studies and human neurological disorders

Scientists create models by transplanting human brain cells culled from stem cells into the brains of animals such as mice, thereby creating a mix of human and animal brain cells in the same brain. This environment is closer to the complexity of a living human brain than what can be simulated in a petri dish study.

Biological Computer: Human Brain Cells on a Chip

In a development straight out of science fiction, Australian startup Cortical Labs has released what it calls the world’s first code-deployable biological computer. The CL1, which debuted in March, fuses human brain cells on a silicon chip to process information via sub-millisecond electrical feedback loops.

A pulsed laser is projected against the side of the head above the ear. Diametrically opposite the source, a demagnifying tapered fiber bundle is placed in close proximity to the scalp and redirects light to a photomultiplier tube. The PMT operates in photon counting mode, such that the detection of a photon produces an electrical pulse that can be synchronized with the laser emission to produce a photon ToF distribution using a time-correlated single-photon counting module.

Brain-computer interface shows promise for decoding inner speech in real time

It's so good that it picks up the stuff you didn't mean to say out loud ...

The BCI was also able to pick up what some inner speech participants were never instructed to say, such as numbers when the participants were asked to tally the pink circles on the screen.

The team also demonstrated a password-controlled mechanism that would prevent the BCI from decoding inner speech unless temporarily unlocked with a chosen keyword.

It's not like this is a new idea or anything, but the sheer volume of remote controlled living creatures is getting me a little worried about my own control of my own living self. Today it's a cicada, tomrrow ... (I can see remote control eyelids being really important for example).

Light-driven cockroach cyborgs navigate without wires or surgery

'In-insect synthesis': Caterpillar factories produce fluorescent nanocarbons

Caterpillar factories - "Successfully used insects as mini molecule-making factories"; referred to as "in-insect synthesis"

To test their concept, the team fed tobacco cutworm caterpillars a diet containing a belt-shaped molecular nanocarbon known as [6]MCPP. Two days later, analysis of the caterpillar poo revealed a new molecule, [6]MCPP-oxylene, which is [6]MCPP that has incorporated an oxygen atom. This subtle change caused the molecule to become fluorescent.

Enhanced weathering could transform US agriculture for atmospheric CO₂ removal

Enhanced weathering - adding crushed basalt to soils using existing agricultural infrastructure; the basalt reacts with CO2, taking it out of the air; it also could improve air quality by interacting with the soil nitrogen cycling processes to reduce the formation of ozone and fine particulate matter.

Ocean-surface warming has more than quadrupled since the late-1980s, study shows

Ocean temperatures were rising at about 0.06 degrees Celsius per decade in the late 1980s, but are now increasing at 0.27 degrees Celsius per decade, a quadrupling.

Global ocean temperatures hit record highs for 450 days straight in 2023 and early 2024. Some of this warmth came from El Niño, a natural warming event in the Pacific.

When scientists compared it to a similar El Niño in 2015–16, they found that the rest of the record warmth is explained by the sea surface warming up faster in the past 10 years than in earlier decades; 44% of the record warmth was attributable to the oceans absorbing heat at an accelerating rate.

Scientists highlight alarming rise in marine heat waves worldwide

One group of researchers found that the number of such heat waves in 2023–2024 was 240% higher than any other year in recorded history.

Extreme ocean heat does not mean climate change is accelerating

The Artist Within


The first tremblings of terror come from a computer program that can write a legal brief, and then argue in real time against a trained human lawyer. But that's obvious. Diagnosing cancer by looking at an x-ray? Pssh. Saw that coming. 

The way technology co-evolves with our species is by getting in the middle of the more creative processes, because that's insidious, which means we don't notice, and so we can't stop it.

The advance of creative pursuit is circuitous, it's unmeasurable, and subject to unannounced yet dramatic shifts in paradigmatic underpinnings. In fact, nobody is even arguing that it's a kind of progress. Your benchmarks, your metrics - they have no power here. A state board of medical examiners will tell you how good this year's crop of doctors perform on their exams etc. There is no national artist database counting the overall social effects of Banksy's automated self-destructive artwork, or Kehinde Wiley's painting of Barack Obama. Because that's not how that works. 

When you let the robot into the house - the temple that is your body and the mind that controls it - it does things there. And because this isn't a real place, it's hard for us to keep track of what's happening. 

These things start small, and they don't seem like a big deal, because who cares if a robot is making art, or even suggestions for making art. I mean it's not like it's making executive orders from the Presidential Office, right? And the willingness to use an automated industrial process to reproduce imagery, let's say via Japanese woodcuts or Andy Warhol's prints, vs "requiring" that a human, perhaps a shaman, maybe just an "artist", to make each image from their own hands, what did that do to us as a species? Did that change us more than allowing in-vitro fertilization for reproduction? Or birth control pills? I doubt it. Then again, maybe they're related (for example by changing the way we value and rely on "real" humans among us). 

We can't answer these questions very well, but we can probably agree that this is where shit gets weird:

Graph-based AI model finds hidden links between science and art to suggest novel materials

They analyze a collection of 1,000 scientific papers about biological materials and turn them into a knowledge map in the form of a graph, using "category theory". The graph revealed how different pieces of information are connected and was able to find groups of related ideas and key points that link many concepts together.

Researchers can use this framework to answer complex questions, find gaps in current knowledge, suggest new designs for materials, and predict how materials might behave, and link concepts that had never been connected before.

The AI model found unexpected similarities between biological materials and "Symphony No. 9," suggesting that both follow patterns of complexity.

In another experiment, the graph-based AI model recommended creating a new biological material inspired by the abstract patterns found in Wassily Kandinsky's painting, "Composition VII." The AI suggested a new mycelium-based composite material. "The result of this material combines an innovative set of concepts that include a balance of chaos and order, adjustable property, porosity, mechanical strength, and complex patterned chemical functionality."

This weblog is typically avoiding all things health-related, and because that's a mess that can swallow you whole, but this is from the Santa Fe Institute. Along with the Complexity Hub in Vienna, and sometimes the RIKEN Institute in Japan, the Santa Fe Institute is the premier institution in the world for those interested in the other side of the cutting edge of science, where the rules haven't been written yet, and all the departments kind sound like each other:

From SFI's new outpost in Ireland: They examined Mediterranean, high-fiber, plant-based, high-protein, ketogenic, and Western diets, to underscore the detrimental effects of the Western diet, characterized by high fat and sugar intake, compared to the benefits of diets rich in plant-based and high-fiber foods. By contrast, it finds that a Mediterranean diet, high in fruits, vegetables, is effective in managing conditions such as cardiovascular disease, IBD, and type 2 diabetes.

How higher-order interactions can remodel the landscape of complex systems

Higher-order interactions can lead to deeper "basins of attraction," which are collections of starting points that end up at the same state as the system moves forward in time. If the system were a pendulum, the lowest point is an attractor, and every possible starting point is in the basin of attraction because they all eventually converge there. 

If the system were a brain working through a complicated math problem, then the thought processes that lead to a solution—hopefully the correct one—are in the basin of attraction. A deeper basin means that the solutions are more stable—that is, starting points get to the bottom faster or more quickly recover from small perturbations.

But even though the basins get deeper, they become narrower. What starting points do end up in the basin get there faster, but overall, fewer starting points lead to the bottom.

Aging societies more vulnerable to collapse, suggests analysis

This new study shows that pre-modern states faced a steeply increasing risk of collapse within the first two centuries after they formed.

"This approach is commonly used to study the risk of death in aging humans, but nobody had the idea to look at societies this way." 

In humans, the risk of dying doubles approximately every six to seven years after infancy. As that exponential process compounds with great age, few people survive more than 100 years. The authors show that it works differently for states. Their risk of termination rises steeply over the first two centuries but then levels off, allowing a few to persist much longer than usual.

They found a similar pattern all over the world from European pre-modern societies to early civilizations in the Americas to Chinese dynasties. (Gulps in American)

RIKEN calling in:
Chaotic dynamics in the brain may enable probabilistic thinking

Even when watching a blank screen with no sound, neurons in the cortex fluctuate spontaneously. Some experiments suggest that this spontaneous activity corresponds to the brain ruminating over imagined possible scenarios—perhaps based on sensory inputs the brain has been presented with in the past, and that this activity follows chaotic dynamics.

The pair fed a computational neural network, driven by chaotic dynamics, with sensory inputs about an object's location.

"One neuron would fire for the object being in the north, another for it being in the northeast, and so on." At any one moment, because of the chaos, the firing neuron can change irregularly. But when averaged over time, the frequency of neurons firing mapped to the correct probability for the object's location.

"In our model, the ultimate probabilistic distribution is robust and gives nearly optimal results, despite the chaos."

Exploring the evolution of social norms with a supercomputer

RIKEN meets the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology; you're in some sh** now:

Thye've created an arena of natural selection (artificial selection) for social norms, so they fight it out and see who wins. This is hard because the norms added to the model, the more complex the interactions. But that's ok, because they used RIKEN's Fugaku, one of the fastest supercomputers worldwide.

They analyzed the reputation dynamics among all 2,080 norms of a natural complexity class, the so-called "third-order norms."

The research shows that cooperative norms are difficult to sustain if the population consists of a single well-mixed community. However, if the population is subdivided into several smaller communities, cooperative norms evolve more easily.

The most successful norm in the simulations is particularly simple. It views cooperation as universally positive and defection as generally negative—except when defection is used as a means to discipline other defectors.

It suggests that the structure of a population significantly influences which social norms prevail and how durable cooperation is.

Is this why some people see the cheap LED lights flicker and some don't?
Scientists discover speed of visual perception ranges widely in humans

There is considerable variation among people in their temporal resolution, meaning some people effectively see more "images per second" than others.

To quantify this, the scientists used the "critical flicker fusion threshold," a measure for the maximum frequency at which an individual can perceive a flickering light source.

Some participants in the experiment indicated they saw the light as completely still when it was in fact flashing about 35 times per second, while others were still able to perceive the flashing at rates of over 60 times per second.

This Ecuadorian forest thrived amid deforestation after being granted legal rights

Rights of Nature Movement - In 2008, Ecuador became the first country to change its constitution to state that nature has the same rights as people. The change was led by Ecuador's Indigenous movement, and marked one of the first major steps in what has become known as the 'rights of nature' movement – a movement centred on a legal framework that recognises the inherent right of the natural world to the same protections as people and corporations.

The rights of nature movement "is a move to transform natural entities from objects to subjects, in courts and in front of the law", says Jacqueline Gallant from New York University's School of Law's Earth Rights Advocacy Clinic. "But in a much broader sense, it's been a movement to reanimate and recentre nature as a subject of intrinsic worth," Gallant explains. This is in contrast, she says, to the Western view of nature as "an inanimate backdrop against which the drama of human activity unfolds".

AI discovers that not every fingerprint is unique

Just a general lesson on how things work, and that when your job depends on you not understanding something or not accepting something as true, you don't:

Guo, who had no prior knowledge of forensics, found a public U.S. government database of some 60,000 fingerprints and fed them in pairs into an artificial intelligence-based system known as a deep contrastive network. Sometimes the pairs belonged to the same person (but different fingers), and sometimes they belonged to different people.

Over time, the AI system, which the team designed by modifying a state-of-the-art framework, got better at telling when seemingly unique fingerprints belonged to the same person and when they didn't. The accuracy for a single pair reached 77%. When multiple pairs were presented, the accuracy shot significantly higher, potentially increasing current forensic efficiency by more than tenfold.

Once the team verified their results, they quickly sent the findings to a well-established forensics journal, only to receive a rejection a few months later. The anonymous expert reviewer and editor concluded that "It is well known that every fingerprint is unique," and therefore, it would not be possible to detect similarities even if the fingerprints came from the same person.

Desperate TikTok lobbying effort backfires on Capitol Hill

So many good quotes in here; crazy story, reminds me of the Roku TOS lockout story also from today: 

US congressional offices have told the BBC they are being deluged with calls from TikTok users about legislation that could see the popular app banned.

Callers range from teenagers to the elderly, and most are "really confused and are calling because 'TikTok told me to'", one Republican staffer revealed.

A Democratic staffer said the most aggressive and threatening calls their office received came from adult women.

So far, TikTok's big mobilization appears to be backfiring.

Lawmakers and their staff say that the lobbying campaign has actually worsened the concerns they have about the app and its parent company ByteDance, and strengthened their resolve to pass the legislation.

TikTok confirmed to the BBC it had sent a notification urging TikTokers to "call your representative now" to urge them to vote against the measure. Users said that the app gave them a direct link for calling the representatives for their districts.

"American phones were geolocated and TikTok users were locked out of the platform until they called their members of Congress. ByteDance weaponized the app against America, and that is exactly why the Congressman supports this measure."

Microsoft's small language model outperforms larger models on standardized math tests

AI's new power of persuasion: Study shows LLMs can exploit personal information to change your mind

In a pre-registered study, the researchers recruited 820 people to participate in a controlled trial in which each participant was randomly assigned a topic and one of four treatment conditions: debating a human with or without personal information about the participant, or debating an AI chatbot (OpenAI's GPT-4) with or without personal information about the participant.

The results showed that participants who debated GPT-4 with access to their personal information had 81.7% higher odds of increased agreement with their opponents compared to participants who debated humans. Without personalization, GPT-4 still outperformed humans, but the effect was far lower.

This work examines the mechanisms used by tardigrades to enter and exit from suspended animation when faced by environmental stress, and provides additional evidence that tardigrade proteins eventually could be used to make life-saving treatments available to people where refrigeration is not possible—and enhance storage of cell-based therapies, such as stem cells.

By growing animal cells in rice grains, scientists dish up hybrid food

Rice grains are porous and have organized structures, providing a solid scaffold to house animal-derived cells in the nooks and crannies. Certain molecules found in rice can also nourish and promote the growth of these cells, making rice an ideal platform.

The team first coated rice with fish gelatin, a safe and edible ingredient that helps cells latch onto the rice better. Cow muscle and fat stem cells were then seeded into the rice and left to culture in the petri dish for nine to 11 days. The harvested final product is a cell-cultured beef rice with main ingredients that meet food safety requirements and have a low risk of triggering food allergies.

Montana man used animal tissue and testicles to breed 'giant' sheep for sale to hunting preserves

Court documents describe a yearslong conspiracy, beginning in 2013, in which Schubarth and at least five other people sought to create “giant sheep hybrids” by cross-breeding different species. Their goal was to garner high prices from hunting preserves where people shoot captive trophy game animals for a fee.

Using biological tissue obtained from a hunter who killed a wild sheep in Kyrgyzstan belonging to the world’s largest species of the animals — Marco Polo argali sheep — Schubarth procured cloned embryos of the animal from a lab, according to court documents.

The embryos were later implanted in a ewe, resulting in a pure Marco Polo argali sheep that Schubert named “Montana Mountain King,” the documents show. Semen from Montana Mountain King was used to artificially impregnate other ewes to create a larger and more valuable species of sheep, including one offspring that he reached an agreement to sell to two people in Texas for $10,000, according to the documents.

In 2019, Schubarth paid $400 to a hunting guide for testicles from a trophy-sized Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep killed in Montana. Schubarth extracted semen from bighorn sheep testicles and used it to breed large bighorn sheep and sheep crossbred with the argali species, the documents show.

Never Go Full Robot


Evaluating truthfulness of fake news through online searches increases chances of believing misinformation

Searching to evaluate the truthfulness of false news articles actually increases the probability of believing misinformation.

Data voids are areas of the information ecosystem that are dominated by low quality information. They  be playing a consequential role in the online search process, sometimes leading to the appearance of non-credible information at the top of search results.

But we're not here for the results, we're here for the methods:

In order to study how people use the internet to search for the truthfulness of news, these scientists recruited their participants through Qualtrics and Amazon's Mechanical Turk, "tools frequently used in running behavioral science studies".

So let's make this point now, that these half-robot, semibot, half-automated services, which apparently support some of our behavioral science research, are getting closer to full-robot because the users (the workers, the mechanical turkers) are using AI to help them do their work, and so we may see some of our behavioral science research get lower in quality over time. And you thought there was a reproducability crisis in behavioral science before!

The CO₂ in human breath is essentially "carbon neutral. As part of the respiration process, we consume fuels like sugars and fats, converting them into water and the carbon dioxide we then breathe out, so our exhalation contributes no more to climate change than we mitigate through growing crops.

Uncertainty abounds in seeding the sky to fight climate change, says study

We don't know what it will do, but we will do it anyway 

Recent studies have shown that the use of solid materials such as alumina, calcite, or even diamond particles could more effectively cool the climate while simultaneously reducing these side effects. However, there is limited understanding of how solid material injection affects the stratospheric ozone layer. 

The new research found that although alumina injection may have an advantage over sulfur dioxide in terms of reduced local stratospheric heating, there are "significant uncertainties" in estimating such injections' impact on the ozone layer.

The scenarios they tested would inject about 5 megatons of alumina particles into the stratosphere per year, which would compensate for about a quarter of the present-day radiative forcing caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The researchers estimate that the global mean ozone loss from these scenarios could range from negligible to as much as 9%, which is about twice the historical peak of ozone loss from chlorofluorocarbons in the 1990s.

Most clean power purchasing strategies do little to cut emissions

Today's most common procurement strategy - known as volumetric or annual matching - proved to be almost entirely ineffective in reducing long-term emissions in the U.S., and because companies can claim full decarbonization by simply calculating their total annual energy consumption and procuring enough clean energy to match that yearly consumption, regardless of when it is actually produced.

Instead, the temporal matching approach the researchers studied consistently succeeded in driving down system-wide emissions because it addresses the temporal mismatch between clean energy production and consumption. By requiring companies to procure their clean energy at the same time as they consume energy, the approach drives investments beyond wind and solar to include energy storage and firm clean energy technologies.

Homeowners insurance could go up more than 55% due to severe weather, inflation, Allstate warns

Allstate is warning customers their homeowners insurance premiums could be hiked more than 55% after the insurer asked the state to approve a series of rate hikes. (They ask for 36.9% but get approved for about 7.0%.)

“Our payments to help New Jersey residents recover from accidents and disasters have increased significantly in recent years and we need to adjust rates to reflect the cost of providing the protection our customers depend on,” Allstate told NJ Advance Media on Thursday.

In the letter to consumers, it said the increase is needed because of inflation and because of costs “due to our catastrophic exposure (severe weather) in the state.”

Research shows how air pollution has offset expected increases in rainfall

The expected increase in rain has been largely offset by the drying effect of aerosols.

"Prior to our study, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had concluded that the evidence was mixed and inconclusive for changes in U.S. precipitation due to global warming," said Bill Collins, associate laboratory director for the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at Berkeley Lab and co-lead author on the study. "We have now provided conclusive evidence for higher rainfall and also helped explain why past studies assessed by the IPCC reached conflicting conclusions."

Over the long term, aerosols cool the planet, which causes a drying effect. But they also have a faster, more local response. That fast impact depends on the season, with aerosols generally reducing rainfall in the winter and spring, and amplifying it in summer and fall over much of the United States.

Scientists create new idea on how to hack a warming planet: drying the upper atmosphere

They're calling it the Last-Ditch Toolbox:

Inject ice high up in the air so water vapor in the upper atmosphere would get a bit drier and that could counteract a small amount of the human-caused warmth.

High-tech planes could inject ice particles about 11 miles high, just below the stratosphere, where the air slowly rises. Then the ice and cold air rise to where it's coldest and gets the water vapor to turn to ice and fall, dehydrating the stratosphere. Injecting 2 tons a week could conceivably take out about 5% of the overall warming created by carbon.

So far there is no workable injection technique, he said.

Schwarz is not quite sure about what side effects could occur, and that's the problem, other scientists said.

Using one million anonymized measurements from airplanes that flew over 52% of American oil wells and 29% of gas production and delivery system sites over a decade, and found that 3% of the U.S. gas produced goes wasted into the air, compared to the Environmental Protection Agency figures of 1%.

This is likely because more than half of these methane emissions are coming from a tiny number of oil and gas sites, 1% or less,

The overflight data shows the biggest leaks are in the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico. Contrast that with tiny leak rates found in drilling in the Denver region and the Pennsylvania area. Denver leaks are so low because of local strictly enforced regulations and Pennsylvania is more gas-oriented, Sherwin said.

Atmospheric observations in China show rise in emissions of a potent greenhouse gas

The GWP of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is 24,300 times that of CO2, and it's used primarily in high-voltage electrical switchgear in electric power grids. Atmospheric concentrations of SF6 have risen sharply along with global electric power demand.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhalation of aerosols containing Legionella. These bacteria can grow, spread, and aerosolize through building water systems.

A recent dramatic increase in Legionnaires’ disease incidence has been observed globally, with a 9-fold increase in the United States from 2000 to 2018, and with disproportionately higher burden for socioeconomically vulnerable subgroups. 

Our results suggest that declining sulfur dioxide air pollution, which has many well-established health benefits, results in reduced acidity of aerosols emitted from cooling towers, which may prolong the survival duration of Legionella in contaminated droplets.

The reason that it feels much hotter than you'd expect from the increase in ambient temperature alone is that global warming is affecting the interplay between humidity and temperature, he said. In the past, relative humidity typically dropped when the temperature increased, allowing the body to sweat more and thus feel more comfortable. However, with climate change, the relative humidity remains about constant as the temperature increases, which reduces the effectiveness of sweating to cool the body.
So it really does feel hotter - it IS hotter, to the human body - than it used to, even at the same temperature.

Marine cloud brightening (MCB), also known as marine cloud engineering, works by spraying tiny particles, or aerosols, into the atmosphere where they mix with clouds and with the primary aim of increasing the amount of sunlight that clouds can reflect.

Researchers created a "natural experiment" using aerosol injection from the eruption of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. With machine learning and historic satellite and meteorological data, the team created a predictor to show that how the cloud would behave during periods when the volcano was inactive. This predictor enabled them to identify clearly the impacts on the clouds that had been directly caused by the volcanic aerosols.

And fyi: In the U.S., a team from the University of Washington recently carried out its first outdoor aerosol experiment from a decommissioned aircraft carrier in Alameda, California.

Sulfate particles have masked part of global warming by reflecting sunlight. In the last couple of decades, however, this cooling effect has reversed and now contributes to a warming due to extensive measures to improve air quality in many regions worldwide.

When removing emissions of reflecting particles, the particles and their cooling effect disappear in the order of days.

"Continued reductions of particle emissions may lead to an accelerated surface temperature warming already in this decade."

“The city of North Wildwood has been experiencing significant erosion of its berm and dune, especially along the northern sections of the municipality’s oceanfront, since the 1990s,” Army Corps officials wrote in a February update on the project.

According to experts, stronger wave action and more frequent storms will only be fueled further by human-caused global warming — bringing on more erosion.

Critics also say the beach protection strategy of replenishment, also done to bolster shores with sand for beachgoers each summer, has only encouraged more people to build homes and settle on the coast.

Findings from the study have revealed that in 15 out of the 16 applications examined, plastic products actually result in lower GHG emissions compared to their alternatives. The reduction in emissions spans from 10 percent to as high as 90 percent across the product life cycle.

Lower energy intensity during production, the weight efficiency of plastics, and superiority in upstream processes including production and transport all highlight the efficiency of plastic materials in mitigating emissions. Also, plastic packaging plays a crucial role in preserving the quality of food across a wide range of categories, helping prevent food spoilage and the GHG emissions it causes.

"Demand reduction, efficiency optimization, lifetime extension, and reuse/recycling are win-win strategies to reduce emissions effectively. Solely focusing on switching to alternative materials is not."
