Empathic Catfish Avatars

An AI painter that creates portraits based on the traits of human subjects

Embodied Conversation Agents (ECA) - First it talks to you, and then it paints your portrait based on who you are, because it knows who you are, better than you do.

They call it their "empathetic ECA avatar" and I call it an intelligentity. Eventually it will be called a semibot, for half computer, half human. OKCupid will buy the rights, and the next time you think you're getting catfished, it might actually be you catfishing yourself via one of these.

I'm imagining a future where we need a self-insurance policy to protect ourselves from other instantiations of ourselves who might try to sabotage us for their own benefit. If you think this sounds a bit much, then you need to read Ted Chiang's "Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom" (2019).

Sending Mixed Signals


Deep-learning system detects human presence by harvesting RF signals

The presence of humans in a room or in other indoor environments can alter the propagation of RF signals in several ways. By pre-processing RF channel measurements, the researchers were able to create 'images' summarizing the signals, which could in turn be analyzed to detect the presence of humans in a given environment. 
They then trained a CNN on a large amount of data containing both magnitude and phase information, two key properties of RF signals. Over time, the deep learning algorithm learned to distinguish when an environment is populated by humans and when it is free from them by analyzing what is known as channel state information (CSI). 
"Exploiting the ubiquity of ambient RF signals such as WiFi, Bluetooth or cellular signals for situational awareness information provides added value to existing RF infrastructure," Chen said. "Occupancy detection, for example, is an application where RF sensing can be a low-cost and infrastructure-free alternative or complement to existing approaches."

Alpha Takes All


This isn't a post about the adversarial neural network that was programmed to play a video game against itself until it took the Grandmaster Championship from the world's best (human) players. It's about a person who beat the computers, and took out a huge portion of the stock market in the process.

Come back with me for a moment, to the year 2010: Smart phones are just now in everybody's hand, the word "application" is just about to be replaced by the word "app," and an algorithm is still just an anagram of the word logarithm.

Wall Street, on the other hand, is just about to get rocked by an event called the Flash Crash of 2010. The market lost and then regained trillions of dollars in 30 minutes, due to a bunch of trading algorithms getting stuck in each other's code like a pack of leashed-up dogs trying to sniff each other's butts. It was described as one of the most turbulent periods in the history of financial markets, and for quite a bit after, nobody knew what the heck happened.

It was also one of the first alarms to be rung about the dangers of artificial intelligence.
"No place for a human" is how the stock market was now described after the takeover by high frequency trading algorithms.

That comment means something different all of the sudden, in light of the Boeing 737 Max's MCAS failure that killed almost 350 people in 2019.

But taking it back to the stock market, the story got a nice twist this year when we were reminded about the Hound of Hounslow. He's a human, but he doesn't exactly belong in the stockmarket either. By 2015, this self-taught quant was held on multiple counts of doing bad things to the stock market, and by 2020, he was given his (lenient) sentence.

Why wasn't he put in jail for life for causing a trillion-dollar market maelstrom? For one thing, he's helping authorities catch other HFT-wielding market manipulators.

The leniency also comes from the fact that he's running an Asperger cortex, and he saw the stock market as a video game, and like AlphaStar, he learned how to play that game really well, and how to "beat" his opponents.  He noticed that the other trading algorithms were doing strange things, and getting entrained into each other's code. He thought he could tap into that groupthink and orchestrate the whole lot, and he did, triggering a cascade of buy/sells that crashed the market.

Manual Override Autocrash


We are already at their service.
We are already neglecting Asimov's Laws.
We don't see it yet because it's automatic updates and automatic screen rotation. When it's automatic plane-flying, or rather automatic plane-crashing, some might see it. Once it's automatically running your entire life, with no consideration to you the end user as an individual, with no consideration to a manual override, it will be too endemic, too pervasive, and too powerful for you to do anything.

The pilot's manual choices should always override software.

Outrunning the Herd




No surprise here - children are more susceptible than adults to influence by robots, even if they're obviously not people.

I'll paraphrase - a bunch of kids were put in a room with a bunch of robots and asked to do dumb sh** that they wouldn't or shouldn't be doing. They could be influenced to do said things as long as the robots made it seem ok.

We used to call this peer pressure. Now we refer to a well-known scientific experiemnt called the Asch paradigm, and it is a standard for measuring conformity. If enough people believe something to be true, it starts to become "true," whether it's true or not. This is how society works. So this idea of succumbing to peer pressure isn't new or unknown, but the effect on kids vs adults, and that it's instigated by a  humanoid, is new, or at least a reminder of how susceptible we are to the influence of others, especially at a young age.

Our allegiance to non-humans shouldn't be too crazy to consider. In case you don't remember your childhood, or don't have kids of your own, let me remind you that for an entire decade in America, a 6-ft tall, purple fuzzy dinosaur told kids what to do. And before that, I do recall letting 16-bit video games take control of my life  for a good 5 years. Kids are not too picky about who they take authority from. If they did, puppet shows might not exist. Lacking a mature brain to generate their own purpose in life, they put a premium on the opinions, beliefs and especially the commands of others. The Bicameral Mind work of Julian Jaynes might also have something to add to this.

Next, I'm not sure how much this is related in the study-authors' work, but I have to bring up Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions, because one of these dimensions (individualism vs collectivism) measures the degree of conformity to be found in a particular population. Some cultures value conformity more than others, for example by forcing everyone to have the same haircut, and so this peer pressure effect may be even more pronounced in other parts of the world. This kid-influencing robot study was conducted in the UK, where there is a wider variety of haircuts.

Let's also take a look back at how Neal Stephenson was playing with this idea more than 20 years ago in a novel about an artificially intelligent book that was designed to teach children, and obviously to influence their worldview and hence their behavior.

And while we're at it, let's remember what has already taken place in America in regards to advertising to children. (I don't know enough about this to link something relevant; but I'm pretty sure there are at least some rules on how, when, and what can be advertised to kids, and it has something to do with McDonald's and breakfast cereal.)

Finally, the inverse of this study says that adults are not swayed so easily as children by a group of robots, and that we should take this as  a cool warning about such dangers in the future. But we can't deny that today, adults are already manipulated by robots*.

I can't say it better than the tech guru Jaron Lanier - social media is a behavior modification platform. We may not obey robots with the servitude of a child, but most of us tend to be influenced by our friends, and even friends of our friends, and so on.

*When I say "robots" in this context of social media, I'm talking about algorithms embodied by avatars that pretend to be actual human people, or the many shades of intelligentities that lie in between.

Would you look at that, just as we talk about how kids are in danger of being manipulated by robots, we get the first hints of how that might not be such a bad idea for adults. When you have an a**hole robot staring you down while you do your job, you do a better job. Go figure. I think we knew this already, with the whole cardboard cut-out cop reducing store thefts.

It doesn't matter if a thing is a robot or a can opener. We can't tell the difference. Forget the Uncanny Valley, if we assign agency to washing machines and our own mobile phones, what makes you think a crappy-looking robot isn't good enough to trick us? We are social creatures, our brain a social tool, and as such, everything is a person, and every act a social interaction. The way you handle your toothbrush has a wisp of sociality to it. Now make your toothbrush talk and have eyes, and try not to let it influence you. We can't.

When Robots Become Human


That's it folks - robots are already too human. Maybe it's not a bad problem to have. Wait, or is it that we are now too much like robots (you see that guy crossing the street without taking his eyes of his phone?).

Couple things I'd like to keep track of here. Amazon's digital assistant is now modeling proper behavior for kids in the form of (rewarding) please's and thank you's. She's too real, and if kids interact with a thing (still pushing the term intelligentity) that's a lot like a person, and yet treating it like a servant by barking orders or calling it mean names, then in 20 years we'll have a society of jerks running around.

I must admit, at the outset I was disappointed to see some friends of mine talk to Siri with complete and utter disrespect, calling her the most vile names in the book, and snapping orders at her like a sub-human degenerate dirtbag.

I was also disappointed to see the headlines after the civil servant robot in Washington DC fell ("jumped") into the fountain - they joked about it committing suicide, as if suicide was something we joke about. Apparently as long as it's a robot doing it, suicide is a joke. I get it; if it's not alive, then how can it kill itself.

But the problem here is that it no longer matters if the thing is "alive" or not. What matters is if it -seems- like a human. We feel bad when robots stuggle. Maybe you remember the Boston Dynamics fail videos? They elicit empathy in us.

We are about as social as a social creature can get. Everything we do is part of an intricate, complex, social web of meaning. And everything we do is recorded by those around us as a model of how to interact with others. When you throw your video game controller at the TV as an adult, your kid sees that and thinks that's how you're supposed to treat your stuff, including the people in your life. This may be microscopic, but it adds up. If we all treat very human-like robots like sub-humans, then we end up with a society of kids who grow up learning to treat each other like crap.

You want your kid to be a misogynist? Just treat your wife like crap. You want your kid to be a jerk in general? Just talk to Siri and Alexa and the ATM machine etc like they're sub-human and you'll give them a shining example of how to do it. You want a young person who feels bad about themselves and is considering suicide to think that life is a joke? Make fun of things that "committ suicide." And the more human these things are, the stronger the effect.

Robots have already become like humans. That was the point from the beginning. We see faces in trees for ****'s sake; we want our robots to be made in our own image. But if we're going to -make- them like humans, then we need to -treat- them like humans.

Final question then - can we still talk trash about the weather? "Ew, it's gross out here," she says on a humid day. Maybe that's not a nice thing to say to the weather; maybe the weather has feelings too? Let's start with the robots and wait for geoengineering to make a robot out of our weather.

Zero Mind


DeepDream is still the greatest thing to come out of artificial intelligence neural nets.

Today is a twofer. Not only has it occured to us that AI needs ethics training, but it turns out that in order to do some things, it needs no training from us at all.

First of all, I don't know about you, but I need Human Subjects Research (HSR) training before I can conduct experiments involving humans. Regardless, the AI region of the Google empire now has a way to question and guide the ethical implications of its human-like thinking machines. (Wait a minute, doesn't that name belong to IBM?)

This is probably a good thing, since they already control the stock market (high frequency trading), and your social life (no explanation necessary). I just hope they have a diverse staff there on the ethics panel, because well, does anyone remember the Google gorilla fail?

How about the one where hundreds of bots were released on twitter in a competition to see who could make the most convincing human-analog, but then some of the algorithms were so good that some people started to flirt with them, and the creators really had to ask themselves when or how they should break it to the poor souls? Those were the early days of experimenting on people via the digital world (2011).

In fact, the head of those experiments, Tim Hwang was very recently named director of the Ethics and Governance of AI Fund, which does research on ethics and AI.

Having covered that, it comes out simultaneously that Google's same DeepMind (the one that did DeepDream and AlphaGo) has now taken unsupervised learning to the final frontier. Instead of teaching the program what to do or even how to learn, they let the thing figure out for itself how to play the game of Go, and it still beats the human. Done. They call it AlphaGo Zero, because it starts with nothing.
