Multigenerational Sociological Programming via Acceptance of and Enthusiasm for the Arts and its Propagation Through the Population


Last night I heard Jaron Larnier speculate that had Star Trek been on the air for ten more years, we'd be living in a different world much less akin to the inside of William Gibson's brain. Alas, the campaign below is reminiscent of, actually modeled after, attempts by a much younger America to not only communicate to its people about the possibilities of the new nation, but to support worthwhile enterprise and exploration.

'Greetings from 51 Pegasi b': How NASA made exoplanets into tourist destinations

In 2015, NASA launched an unusual and brilliant exoplanet outreach campaign, offering retro-style posters, virtual guided tours, and even coloring books. The project quickly went viral worldwide. What explains the success of a campaign about a relatively young field of science that — unlike other areas of space research — lacks spectacular imagery?

Ceridwen Dovey, science communicator, writer, filmmaker, and researcher, has just published in the Journal of Science Communication a Practice Insight paper that presents a case study focusing on the Exoplanet Travel Bureau's poster campaign. Dovey describes the productive working relationships between scientists and artists that produced this standout work and shows how, in contexts like this, artists are not merely in service to science but can also inspire research itself and help scientists clarify their own thinking.

First, the available visuals: "We live in an age of extraordinary astronomical imagery — the Hubble telescope's stunning images, for instance — that everybody knows well for their beauty, color and precision," explains Dovey. "But with exoplanet science imagery, at the moment there's really not very much to see — and this is a known challenge for the communication of exoplanetary science to the general public."

"The team at the Exoplanet Travel Bureau chose to use 1930s retro-nostalgic image styles inspired by the lovely posters of National Parks like Yosemite created by the Works Progress Administration. Those campaigns sought in part to provide work after the Depression and to attract tourists to iconic national parks like Yellowstone. These posters aimed to evoke the romance of visiting these places and the kinds of nature encounters that would be possible there," explains Dovey.

Joby Harris and his team decided to create a series of posters imagining exoplanets as if they were just around the corner—your next vacation destination. A playful way to encourage the public to imagine them as real places, drawing on the aesthetics and imagery of the historic series of U.S. national park posters. However, an important issue immediately arose during the discussions between artists and scientists.

Straight Bernays

I'm not sure why people hate Edward Bernays so much. Especially Americans. In America, the economy itself relies on people being brainwashed into spending their money on stuff they don't need. "Disposable income" it's called, and it's the basis for the consumer economy that apparently gives America its edge. Without "engineering the consent" of an entire population, we wouldn't have teflon or wall-to-wall carpet. And we wouldn't all be living the American dream of freedom from tyranny, you know, protection against authoritarian overreach like warrantless wiretapping, or more terrible things like being kidnapped off the street into an unmarked van. We wouldn't all have access to free health care, or cars and cheap gas so we can dissolve the social fabric by driving away from our friends and families, towards better economic opportunities that distort the value of our labor, and exploit our social capital leaving us alone, depressed and financially insecure. I thought we like all those things, yet we don't like Bernays. I thought we like surveillance advertising; it's cute to think that someone cares so much about you they're logging your location every 5 seconds throughout the day and plotting it against all the other people you're co-located with so they can sell you lipstick to make you look better, because I'm sorry to have to say this but you don't look that great right now, and could use some help, and we're here to help. Edward Barnays is here to help. Why are you resisting?

Finally, I'm paraphrasing here, on how to change people's minds:
People hold no allegiance to beliefs. They hold allegiance to other people, authorities who espouse those beliefs. These are two different things. To change one's beliefs, therefore, one must either discredit the authority or create new authorities. Discrediting the beliefs does not work.

'Brain-free' robots that move in sync are powered entirely by air

Brain-free is another way to say it. They also call them "fluidic robots", and also embodied intelligence. 

A major goal in soft robotics is to encode behavior and decision-making directly into the robot's physical structure. 

They devised a single module that can do all three of these things: actuate in response to air pressure like a muscle, sense pressure change, and switch air flow between on and off like a logic gate. 

"This spontaneous coordination requires no predetermined instructions but arises purely from the way the units are coupled to each other and upon their interaction with the environment."

"Encoding decision-making and behavior directly into the robot's physical structure could lead to adaptive, responsive machines that don't need software to 'think.' It is a shift from 'robots with brains' to 'robots that are their own brains.' That makes them faster, more efficient, and potentially better at interacting with unpredictable environments."

Bioluminescent tool captures neural activity without external lasers

The team described a bioluminescence tool it recently developed, called the Ca2+ BioLuminescence Activity Monitor - or "CaBLAM," for short.

"You can make that process calcium-sensitive so you can get proteins that will shift back a different amount or different color of light, depending on whether or not calcium is present, with a bright signal."

Brain computer interface enables rapid communication for two people with paralysis

This was always the way it was going to happen - they aren't choosing one letter at a time with an eye-tracker, they're imagining typing with their fingers, and the corresponding motor cortex spits signals recorded by the brain implant: 

"BrainGate" - Microelectrode sensors are placed in the motor cortex, a part of the brain that controls movement. Next, a QWERTY keyboard is displayed in front of the participant, with each letter mapped onto fingers and finger positions—up, down, or curled. As the participant intuitively attempts these finger movements, the electrodes sense the brain's electrical activity, then send a signal to a computer system that can translate the neural activity into letters. This output is then processed through a final predictive language model to ensure a cohesive, accurate communication result.

Edward Bernays


I've always wanted to read Bernays. I first heard of him on WBAI 99.5FM, a public radio station in New York City and under Pacifica, during their fundraiser, where they would play a documentary about the mass manipulation of populations, and offer to give it to you for free if you donated some money to the station. At that time, Bernays sounded like the most diabolical person ever. Today, we're in an age of digital mass manipulation, with non-human algorithms and predatory platforms, and so I thought maybe it's time I read the Bernays, from the source, and so I did. 

Now I realize that he was not a diabolical mastermind who manipulated every person on the planet for greed and power. He was trying to help the people talk to their government and to their corporate overlords. Granted, he did work for entities like Phillip Morris, and granted, audacious plots like the Carbon Footprint propagandized by British Petroleum were crafted in his spirit. And then there's the quote from the back of the book jacket of his second book Propaganda (copied below), which is nothing short of the most ominous and conspiratorial provocation ever. But in his own books, he's saying he does all this because he wants to see people understand each other. He doesn't only want the business he works for to make more money, he wants the customers they serve to be more satisfied at the same time. He doesn't just want a government to come up with some new laws, he wants those laws to actually be just what the people need, no more and no less. "The goal of all public relations is good will" (Public Relations, Bernays, 1952, p5). 

Maybe there's another piece to all this, some criticism written 20 years after he dies, that shows how I was so easily misled, and how he was in fact the sinister mental criminal the WBAI documentary presented him as. Maybe; but I'm not there yet. So for now, here it is.

Crystallizing Public Opinion
Edward Bernays, 1923 

This is his first book.

Something about "the danger of interference by the public in the conduct of the industry"; but his tone overall is one of cooperation, consideration, conscientiousness, etc., and for the public good just as much as the interests of industry, government, etc. p21

On Paul Revere vs Longfellow, and Perception vs Reality - based on a story in a "New York newspaper", about public relations (which was a new concept at the time by the way). Two other people rode with Paul Revere that night. "There were three waiting to see the signal hung in the tower of the Old North Church. Everyone of them mounted and spurred just as Mr. Longfellow described Paul Revere. They all got the signal. They all rode and waked the farmers, spreading the warning. Afterward, one of them was an officer in Washington's army, another became governor of one of the States. Not one in twenty thousand Americans ever heard the names of the other two, and there is hardly a person in America who does not know all about Revere. Did Revere make history or did Longfellow?" p22-23

On Influencing Public Opinion - or even on correcting misinformation, as the advice sounds very familiar. "It is seldom effective to call names or to attempt to discredit the beliefs themselves. The council on public relations, after examination of the sources of established beliefs, must either discredit the old authorities or create new authorities by making articulate a mass opinion against the old belief or in favor of a new one." And because he says the beliefs of individuals come from authorities, like the President of the United States, the president of the local school board, or the director of a finance committee; authorities are where the belief comes from, and people have allegiance to them; the allegiance is to other people, not to ideas or beliefs, but it appears as allegiance to belief. And therefore, you can't discredit the belief but the authority where it comes from. p30

In a chapter titled "The Interaction of Public Opinion with the Forces That Help Make It", he talks about the back-and-forth of the public opinion and public will on other systems, which then influence them back, etc., and he says, "Give the people what they want" is only half sound. What they want and what they get are fused by some mysterious alchemy. The press, the lecturer, the screen and the public lead and are led by each other." p38

He mentions often "the crowd" and "crowd-mind" and Everett Dean Martin's the Behavior of Crowds.

He refers to Instincts of Herd by Trotter to explain the behaviors of the group vs the individual.

On Dull News Days - he is referencing an article by the editors of the New York Tribune, April 19, 1922, "What Else Happened That Day", which is about the news on the day Austria declared war on Serbia, and which started World War One. First Bernays says when there is no big news, real editing is needed to select the real news from the semi-news. Then he says, "What you read on dull news days is what fixes your opinion of your country and of your compatriots. It is from the non-sensational news that you see the world and assess, rightly or wrongly, the true value of persons and events." And so Bernays is saying it is in this way, small yet unending, that our ideas are shaped. Not the big, single incidents; the ones you notice. It's the million little things, and so small you don't notice. Little by little you build your ideas, your beliefs. p51

Here citing Lippmann's "Public Opinion", there are 3 ways to "obtain cohesive force" of the public:
1. Patronage and Pork - a member of one community will promise reciprocal support to the member from another community
2. Government by Terror and Obedience - [no explanation is given]
3. Governments based on such highly developed systems of information, analysis and self-consciousness that the 'knowledge of national circumstances and reasons of state' is evident to all men. ... [T]he degree to which the material for a common consciousness exists determines how far cooperation will depend upon force, or upon the milder alternative to force, which is patronage and privilege. p56-57

On the Interlapping Group Formations in Society - let us examine for a moment the personnel of the Horseshoe at the Metropolitan Opera House. It is comprised of people who are rich, but this economic classification is only one, for the men and women who assemble there are presumably music lovers. But also ... art lovers ... sportsmen ... merchants and bankers ... philosophers ... motorists and amateur farmers. p63

And a silk firm trying to reach the public, targets women, propagandizing silk as fashion, as art, as the natural history of the silk worm ... p64

Citing Martin's "The Behavior of Crowds", "a debate will draw a larger crowd than a lecture." p68

The first picture I wanted to use seemed very obviously artificially generated, so I chose this one instead. I didn't look at the words printed at the bottom, until I did, and then I decided to just leave it for everyone to see. This is how hard it's become to find an actual original photo from that day.

This is his second book.

On the back jacket, "Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country." This sounds so ominous and conspiratorial, but not how he seemed to portray it? And so I might have to argue that even Bernays himself is saying that true power is part of the iterative creative force of a population acting on its governing bodies which then act back on the population which then act in response back on the governing bodies, ad infinitum; and so nobody rules anything, nobody ultimate controls anything.

His first book seems to be making the case for a public opinion expert, or public relations expert. Here, he's making the case for propaganda, which is the instrument of the public relations expert. 

The New Propagandists, a list: The President of the United States and the members of his Cabinet; the Senators and Representatives in Congress; the Governors of our forty-eight states; the presidents of the chambers of commerce in our hundred largest cities, the chairmen of the boards of directors of our hundred or more largest industrial corporations, the presidents of many of the labor unions affiliated in the American Federation of Labor, the national president of each of the national professional and fraternal organizations, the president of each of the racial or language societies in the country, the hundred leading newspaper and magazine editors, the fifty most popular authors, the presidents of the fifty leading charitable organizations, the twenty leading theatrical or cinema producers, the hundred recognized leaders of fashion, the most popular and influential clergymen in the hundred leadings cities, the presidents of our colleges and universities and the foremost members of their faculties, the most powerful financiers in Wall Street, the most noted amateurs of sport, and so on. p12

"Invisible government" and "mass psychology" - these are some mid-20th c. and early 21st c. buzzwords; were they buzzwords in 1920 when he wrote this?

He talks about the new industrial economy and says the new business is not to make more stuff, because we got that with the industrial revolution, "To make customers is the new problem" and his greater context here is inter-industry and inter-commodity competition. p30

Ultimately he seems to see it as a cooperation, and a "bringing order from chaos"

He also says beliefs you agree with are education, and beliefs you disagree with are propaganda, but that propaganda is its own thing, and a good propagandist can use it to influence public opinion to the benefit of both.

This is his last book. Much of it is taken from previously published material, either his own earlier books, or news, journals, etc., articles written by him and others. I get somewhat of a feeling that he's being defensive of propaganda; this is written in 1952, where the whole world knows what it means, and what it can do. At his first book, circa 1920, the world, and the concept of 'propaganda' were both much different. 

"The goal of all public relations is good will" p5 

On Publicity vs Public Relations - "Publicity is a one-way street; public relations, a two-way street. The modern public relations man owes his being to the destruction of the laissez-faire in the early twentieth century; he owes it to the muckrakers of the period, the Square Deal, the New Freedom, and the New Deal." p5

Propaganda - "The term 'propaganda' was introduced when Pope Gregory XIII established a Committee for the Propagation of the Faith to found seminars and print catechisms and other religious works in foreign countries. Subsequently, Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) founded the College of Propaganda to educate priests. In 1650 Pope Clement VII instituted the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith to spread Catholicism the world over." p20

Public Opinion - the phrase is first used in the Enlightenment, which is after revolutions gave rights to public speech, freedom of presses, etc., and all as a result of literacy in the population. ... Rousseau's term volonte generale, or the "general will", and the German Volksgeist, or "spirit of the people", and Jeremy Bentham's "tribunal of public opinion" p22

PT Barnum would write letters to the editor of a newspaper, under pseudonyms, and both for and against PT Barnum. (This sounds like the Black Lives Matter movement circa 2018, and follows Bernays earlier advice that 'a debate is better than a lecture'; recall there were protests on both sides of the issue held at the same place and same time and started by the same organization but masquerading as two opposing organizations.) p38

During the period 1800-1865, slavery was the primary topic; he lists all the ways literature, magazines, etc. influenced public opinion, and that is where we see the first real reference to 'public relations', used by a rector in New York City, 1842 p46

Publicity vs Public Relations - it was called publicity, but in 1908, AT&T head used the word in the heading of the annual report. p70

Freud was the uncle of Bernays.

The Committee on Public Information of WWI (imagine that)

[Relevant in Post-COVID 2025] Following the Great Depression, "Corporations and leaders had lost prestige simultaneously. From a market standpoint, the public was keenly sensitive, because of its feeling of insecurity, to everything about a corporation that it did not understand. ... sales of products fell off for the most improbably and unlikely reasons: false rumors, ... No possible subject that could be a matter of disagreement between groups of the public was too trivial to cause a wave of public disapproval or a falling off in buying. p92

The Institute for Propaganda Analysis, started by the Boston merchant Edward A. Filene, 1937, and published Propaganda Analysis, a monthly newsletter "to help intelligent citizens detect and analyze propaganda"

Classifications: 
  • the name-calling device
  • glittering generalities
  • transfer in terms of approved symbols and sanctions
  • testimonial
  • plain folks' device
  • card-stacking
  • bandwagon

A major distinction he makes is the one-way vs two-way streets; the one-way approach to public relations is what most people call sales. p122

The genius of radon watches - they were indispensable to soldiers on the front lines because they couldn't use lights to see their watches, so the radon watch was put on soldiers, and the soldiers were sold to the people, at a time when watches were still considered feminine. p129-130

"Engineering of Consent" is a chapter title, and pretty ominous sounding if you ask me.

He recommends all Public Relations Councils have a library of people and organizations, like the directory of newspapers, or the Congressional Directory...p162

He lists some of his processes
  • Research - survey people, write them letters
  • Appeal to Desire - aka "psychological raw materials", self preservation, ambition, pride, hunger, love of family and children, patriotism, imitativeness, the desire to be a leader, love of play
  • Symbols - Horses are the symbol for both Marlboro and Budweiser (jesus yes they are)
  • Do not think of tactics in segmented approaches; the problem is not to get articles into a newspaper or radio time or arrange for a motion-picture newsreel; it is rather to set in motion a broad activity, the success of which depends on interlocking all phases and elements of the proposed strategy, implemented by tactics that are tuned to the moment of maximum effectiveness
  • "He must prepare copy written in simple language and sixteen-word sentences" p167

He recommends each business make notes on all things public about the business, government legislation, even newspaper clippings to see how they are viewed by the public 
"House Organs" - in-house company magazines ... don't mention strikes or labor issues in general, despite being of utmost interest to the readership (employees) p210
[But this is my opinion, it just occurs immediately when reading this] A business producing a "house organ" that continually educates its employees on its business, its economics, its hiring practices, seems it would have no choice over time but to accumulate bias, until it's no longer trusted, and thus can no longer serve its purpose of educating employees (because they don't trust it to read it). A separate entity would have to publish it, yet paid for by the company, and no company would do that on its own, at least not without being required by law?

Remote Control I Work From Home


It's not like this is a new idea or anything, but the sheer volume of remote controlled living creatures is getting me a little worried about my own control of my own living self. Today it's a cicada, tomrrow ... (I can see remote control eyelids being really important for example).

'In-insect synthesis': Caterpillar factories produce fluorescent nanocarbons

Caterpillar factories - "Successfully used insects as mini molecule-making factories"; referred to as "in-insect synthesis"

To test their concept, the team fed tobacco cutworm caterpillars a diet containing a belt-shaped molecular nanocarbon known as [6]MCPP. Two days later, analysis of the caterpillar poo revealed a new molecule, [6]MCPP-oxylene, which is [6]MCPP that has incorporated an oxygen atom. This subtle change caused the molecule to become fluorescent.

Believe Me It Works


Placebo is magic. It's what makes 4 pills stronger than 2 pills of the same overall dose. It's what makes an injection stronger than a pill of the same thing. It's what makes "trust me I'm a doctor" work better than "sorry this is my first time doing this". It sure seems like something that has no business being in the field of medicine, or in scientific journals, or your local hospital, but it is, and because it has to be, because it's real. I mean, it's fake, but it's real, because it works. And that's because we, as humans, are weird as hell. And being susceptible to false beliefs is actually a survival trait. (But is there such thing as a false belief?)

Meditation retreat rapidly reprograms body and mind, brain monitoring reveals

Open Label Placebo - participants knowingly take part in healing activities presented as placebos with no active medical ingredient, but which can still produce real benefits through the power of expectation, social connection and shared practices.

20 healthy adults attended a 7-day residential program featuring daily lecture sessions, approximately 33 hours of guided meditation and group healing practices. Before and after the retreat, participants had their brains scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and had blood testing. 

The researchers observed several major changes after the retreat:
  • Brain network changes: Meditation during the retreat reduced activity in parts of the brain associated with mental chatter, making brain function more efficient overall.
  • Enhanced neuroplasticity: When applied to laboratory-grown neurons, blood plasma from post-retreat participants made brain cells grow longer branches and form new connections.
  • Metabolic shifts: Cells treated with post-retreat plasma showed an increase in glycolytic (sugar-burning) metabolism, indicating a more flexible and adaptive metabolic state.
  • Natural pain relief: Blood levels of endogenous opioids—the body's natural painkillers—increased after the retreat, indicating that the body's natural pain-relief systems were activated.
  • Immune activation: Meditation increased inflammatory and anti-inflammatory immune signals simultaneously, suggesting a complex, adaptive immune response rather than a simple suppression or activation.
  • Gene and molecular signaling changes: Small RNA and gene activity in blood shifted after the retreat, particularly in pathways related to brain function.
  • Limitations - this was done with all healthy participants

How To Control A Population in Six Easy Steps


We have really got this thing figured out. And by we, I mean not you:

Coding differences in Medicare Advantage plans led to $33 billion in excess revenue to insurers

The analysis found that because of coding differences, the average Medicare Advantage risk score in 2021 was 0.19 higher than the average Traditional Medicare risk score and Medicare Advantage plans received an estimated $33 billion in additional revenue, with $13.9 billion, or 42% of the total, going to UnitedHealth Group. 

MA plans are paid more for sicker members and less for healthier members, providing an incentive for MA plans to report as many diagnoses as legitimately possible.

The researchers found that the average MA risk score was 18.5% higher than the average TM risk score. 

Differential coding resulted in an estimated $33 billion in additional payments to MA plans in 2021, a $1,863 increase in revenue per UnitedHealth member, and substantially greater than the industry average of $1,220. 

Data came from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Chronic Conditions Data Warehouse from 2015 to 2020 and the Master Beneficiary Summary Files from 2015 to 2021. The core analytic sample included 697 contracts that were active in 2021.

A lot of nerve here on my part as I'm not a scientist - but this isn't done right. It's the social factor of how you can't control the wind turbine combined with the sound, not the sound alone - and the same thing happens with smells, especially with smells, all the time. (See Mass Psychogenic Illness). And I'm a bit surprised because this is in a humanities journal, so you would have thought they were aware of these phenomena.

The Era of Mind Control Opens Wide

Open-label placebo appears to reduce premenstrual symptoms

Open-label placebos (OLPs)—placebos that are provided with full transparency—have been shown to have positive effects on various complaints, including irritable bowel syndrome, chronic low back pain, and menopausal hot flashes.

Researchers in Switzerland set out to examine whether these OLPs could have a positive impact on premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms.

150 women aged 18 to 45 years old who had PMS or premenstrual dysphoric disorder, between August 2018 and December 2020, were randomly allocated into three groups to 1. receive treatment as usual, 2. receive OLPs with no further explanation than that they were receiving placebos, or 3. receive OLPs in pill form with an explanation of what they were and why OLPs could potentially ease PMS symptoms.

  • Treatment as usual reported a 33% reduction symptom intensity
  • Placebo with no explanation reported a 50.4% reduction 
  • Placebos provided twice a day for six weeks with an explanation resulted in a 79.3% reduction
  • (Limitations: they advertised the trial as a study for a side-effect-free intervention for PMS, so they might have attracted participants who were more open to unconventional treatments; also the results were reliant on self-reporting)

Study examines suicide contagion following celebrity deaths, opening avenues for prevention

This researcher normally does infectious disease models [I'll refer to these as SIR models] but made a new model for suicide contagion. The suicides of Robin Williams in 2014, and of Kate Spade, and Anthony Bourdain, in 2018 led to large increases in suicidal thought and behavior. The model saw a thousand-fold increase of the likelihood that a person would begin to ideate suicide following news of Williams' death (measured by calls to the national suicide hotline), and it lasted for two weeks

Are ideas contagious? How the structure of human-interaction networks affects spread of both illness and information

Using a time series of binary node states as input, we show how to jointly identify the network’s structure and the dynamical rules that generated the contagion. Our method is conceptually related to that of Refs. [19, 11, 20], which all reconstruct a network and its dynamical rules from binary time-series. Unlike these previous studies, however, we put few restrictions on the contagion rules, and we generate a complete posterior distribution over parameters and contagion rules instead of point estimates.

We then use this framework to examine the difficulty of network reconstruction as a function of the contagion process’s rules.

We describe network contagions with a neighborhood-based susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) model. [not SIR] [21] 

They use Zachary's karate club, see below.

In the context of social media where the spread of information is often modeled as a complex contagion process, our results imply that we will learn less than would be expected if we simply translate prior reconstructability results for simple contagion processes with empirically determined estimates of R0. For extremely viral trends or information, however, we may be able to recover the effective contact networks with more precision than previously estimated. These results will not only inspire future network reconstruction methods but also guide how well different types of experimental data can hope to inform network reconstruction.

Post Script:  Zachary's Karate Club is a social network of a university karate club studied by Wayne W. Zachary for a period of three years from 1970 to 1972. The network captures 34 members of a karate club, documenting links between pairs of members who interacted outside the club. During the study a conflict arose between the administrator "John A" and instructor "Mr. Hi" (pseudonyms), which led to the split of the club into two. Half of the members formed a new club around Mr. Hi; members from the other part found a new instructor or gave up karate. Based on collected data Zachary correctly assigned all but one member of the club to the groups they actually joined after the split.

Zachary Karate Club Club is an honorific group of scientists who have used Zachary's Karate Club as an example in a scientific presentation.

How Humans Work


Having been human for some time now, there's lots of quirks of human behavior that have been explained, and the world is a less confusing place as a result.

Yet there are some that remain. Such as - when you're driving in traffic and look at a person in another car, but in such a way that there's no way they could see you looking at them, and yet they somehow know, and stare right back at you. Or when you get caught looking at someone and try to avert your eyes, but you can tell you got caught. Or the reverse, just as common. How on earth do we do this? ESP? That's been my only explanation, which is to say, I've got no explanation. Until now:

They succeeded in determining with unprecedented precision the exact moment at which the direction of gaze is detected using an electroencephalogram (EEG) and machine learning.

The brain first perceives the more global visual cues, i.e. the orientation of the head, before focusing on the more local information. Hierarchical organization then allows for integration of eye region and head orientation information.

(And this is why "side eye" is a creepy, uncanny valley thing; it's a mismatch of head direction and eye direction.)

Study links social and non-social synchrony to romantic attractiveness

Some people are super synchronizers, and super synchronizers are consistently rated as more attractive.

The ability to synchronize stems from fundamental sensorimotor abilities and that this adaptability might be perceived as beneficial in romantic contexts. ("Romantic Contexts")

Synchronized physiological states between two people can facilitate the regulation of bodily systems, ultimately enabling more fulfilling interactions between them.

The researchers first carried out an initial online experiment involving 144 participants. These participants were asked to watch short videos in which a male and a female actor interacted with each other, exhibiting either a low or high physiological and behavioral synchrony.

After watching this video, they were asked to rate the attractiveness of the male and female actors. The researchers found that greater synchrony between the actors in the videos increased the attractiveness ratings provided by the study participants. 

In a follow up experiment, some participants were asked to interact with potential partners in a speed dating experiment, and complete a tapping task designed to measure their synchronization, while using a wearable device called the Empatica E4 wristband which measured the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, the secretion of sweat and changes in electrodermal activity.

Parasomnia: What happens inside a sleepwalker's brain?

Parasomnia - sleepwalking

Those who experience parasomnias during non-REM sleep sometimes report having dream-like experiences and sometimes appear completely unconscious (i.e., on automatic pilot).

They provoke a parasomnia episode in the lab, where on the first night the patient sleeps normally, but on the second night is kept awake and only allowed to sleep the next morning, when they are exposed to a loud sound upon entering the deep-sleep stage. In some cases, this results in a parasomnia episode. 

In 56% of episodes, patients reported that they had been dreaming during the episode. "It was often about an impending misfortune or danger. Some reported that they thought the ceiling was going to come down. One patient thought they'd lost their baby and was searching through the bedsheets, and stood up in bed to try to save ladybugs from gliding down the wall and dying," Siclari explains.

"In 19% of the cases, the patients weren't experiencing anything and simply awoke to find themselves doing things, almost like a trance."

"Interestingly, patients almost never mention the sound that initiated the parasomnia episode, but rather some other type of impending danger. The louder we go with the sound volume, the higher the chance that we provoke an episode."

Study shows babies learn to imitate others because they themselves are imitated by caregivers

Social bonding gets people on the same wavelength, neural synchronization study suggests

176 three-person groups of human participants wore caps with fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) electrodes while they communicated with strangers in a face-to-face triangle. (But it sounds like they communicated via text message, although they were sitting across from each other.)

This writeup is so concise I have to copy the whole thing:

Each group democratically selected a leader, so each group of three ultimately included one leader and two followers. After strategizing together, groups played two economic games designed to test their willingness to make sacrifices to benefit their group (or harm other groups).

Experimenters assigned some triads to go through a bonding session, where they were grouped according to color preferences, given uniforms, and led through an introductory chat session to build familiarity.

Bonded groups spoke more freely and bounced between speakers more frequently and rapidly, relative to groups that didn't experience this bonding session. This bonding effect was stronger between leaders and followers than between two followers.

Neural activity in two brain regions linked to social interaction, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) and the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ), aligned between leaders and followers if they had bonded.

The authors state that this neural synchronization suggests that leaders may be anticipating followers' mental states during group decision-making, though they acknowledge that their findings are restricted to East Asian Chinese individuals communicating via text (without non-verbal cues), whose culture emphasizes group cohesion and commitment towards group leaders.

Cooperative interactive tasks between individuals with weak social ties result in more synchronized brain activity compared to individuals with strong ties. 

The participants were given a joint tapping task where they had to tap a mouse button in opposite rhythms. They wore earphones and had to anticipate their partner's movements.

Researchers suggest that the lack of familiarity between strangers requires a more involved process for predicting each other's actions or behaviors in a cooperative task. Consequently, this heightened engagement leads to a more efficient transfer of information between closely connected nodes within the neural network.

Understanding the spread of behavior: How long-tie connections accelerate the speed of social contagion

This is all getting pretty scary; I used to think this was something far off, but it sure seems we have both the knowledge and the means to do these things, and I wonder how it's being done already, and highly doubt it's not being done already. Too irresistible. 

Initially, researchers thought highly clustered ties that are close together in networks created the perfect environment for the spread of complex behaviors that require significant social reinforcement. However, long ties, which are created through randomly rewired edges that make them "longer," accelerate the spread of social contagions. 

(So this is not about weak vs strong ties, but short vs long.)

Having a small probability of adoption below the contagion threshold is enough to ensure that random rewiring accelerates the spread of these contagions.

This research suggests those wanting to achieve fast, total spread would benefit from implementing intervention points across network neighborhoods with long-tie connections to other network regions
