New theory explores how workers interact with technology in the modern workplace

This is about a new theory of workplace communication; the traditional version is called Social Exchange Theory, and it says we engage with people who are rewarding, and avoid people who are costly. Your co-worker might know a lot about a certain subject, but they talk your ear off.

The new theory is called Socio-Technical Exchange, and it says we develop "machine heuristics" - "When they felt expertise was important, people often preferred a human coworker, finding coworkers more efficient and knowledgeable. However, with simple or embarrassing questions, a machine was deemed a superior collaborator."

Teaching AI models the broad strokes to sketch more like humans do

Their method, called "SketchAgent," uses a multimodal language model—AI systems that train on text and images to develop a "sketching language" in which a sketch is translated into a numbered sequence of strokes on a grid. The system was given an example of how things like a house would be drawn, with each stroke labeled according to what it represented — such as the seventh stroke being a rectangle labeled as a "front door" — to help the model generalize to new concepts.

Study argues online clicks and scrolls are 'thin labor' powering AI

Every time a user solves a reCAPTCHA or browses a social media feed, they provide the training data necessary for AI systems to function. Currently, tech giants extract this value without offering users any bargaining power or fair terms of engagement.

"We must decide if we are merely horses leaving digital manure behind or if we are the essential workers who build the intelligence of the future"

They advocate for the use of data unions, data strikes, and enhanced portability rights to give users a way to negotiate with massive platforms. By treating data as labor, the authors provide a framework for the public to exert collective power against the extractive practices of surveillance capitalism.

When we act together to withhold or redirect our data, we transform from passive sources of information into a collective force that can reshape the digital economy to serve everyone, not just a few billionaires."

Leading AI chatbots show dementia-like cognitive decline in tests, raising questions about their future in medicine

Something about anthropomorphism - saying they have dementia, like saying they hallucinate, is assigning human-like qualities to a robot:

Researchers assessed the cognitive abilities of the leading, publicly available LLMs — OpenAI's ChatGPT versions 4 and 4o, Anthropic's Claude 3.5 "Sonnet", and Google's Gemini versions 1 and 1.5 — using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, widely used to detect cognitive impairment and early signs of dementia, usually in older adults. 

ChatGPT 4o achieved the highest score (26 out of 30), followed by ChatGPT 4 and Claude (25), with Gemini 1.0 scoring lowest (16).

The uniform failure of all large language models in tasks requiring visual abstraction and executive function highlights a significant area of weakness that could impede their use in clinical settings.

"Not only are neurologists unlikely to be replaced by large language models any time soon, but our findings suggest that they may soon find themselves treating new, virtual patients - artificial intelligence models presenting with cognitive impairment."

Condé Nast, other news orgs say AI firm stole articles, spit out “hallucinations”

In February 2024, [generative AI company] Cohere announced that it would provide legal protection against intellectual property claims to its paying enterprise customers. This includes "full indemnification for any third party claims that the outputs generated by our models infringe on a third party's intellectual property rights," for Cohere "enterprise customers that comply with our guidelines and do not intentionally attempt to generate infringing content." (Note this is not a ruling like the Reuters case but just the beginning of the lawsuit.)

New study identifies differences between human and AI-generated text

Just the stats ma'am: 

They show how LLMs write by prompting them with extracts of writing from various genres, such as TV scripts and academic articles. 

LLMs used present participle clauses at two to five times the rate of human text, as demonstrated in this sentence written by GPT-4o: "Bryan, leaning on his agility, dances around the ring, evading Show's heavy blows."

They also used nominalizations at 1.5 to two times the rate of humans, and GPT-4o uses the agentless passive voice at half the rate as humans. This suggests that LLMs are trained to write in an informationally dense, noun-heavy style, which limits their ability to mimic other writing styles.

The researchers also found that instruction-tuned LLMs have distinctive vocabularies, using some words much more often than humans writing in the same genre. For example, versions of ChatGPT used "camaraderie" and "tapestry" about 150 times more often than humans do, while Llama variants used "unease" 60 to 100 times more often. Both models had strong preferences for "palpable" and "intricate."

Can we just pause for a minute and recognize that we're saying "more often than humans do" as if we knew what universal human speech was like. All this talk about bias in the algorithms, certainly important because it can be amplified, but what about the bias in the base sets? What are the base data we're using to say what a "human" is like?

Also, as a native English speaker, I do recognize that non-natives tend to overuse present participles (like words ending in -ing), which may or may not have anything to do with this and the joke that 'AI is just three [people from underdeveloped communities] in a trenchcoat'. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, go listen to an Excel tutorial for a few minutes. ...

IBM's AI debating system able to compete with expert human debaters

The IBM system, known simply as Project Debater, scans the internet for such arguments and uses them in ways that it has learned are convincing.

Project Debater was asked to convince a panel of viewers that telemedicine was a good idea. Most of those on the panel found that the AI system did indeed change their stance on the topic—a possible indication that AI systems may one day soon play a role in human debates such as those that occur on social media sites.

SEIHAI - The hierarchical AI that won the NeurIPS-2020 MineRL competition

The winning algorithm was called "sample-efficient hierarchical AI" or SEIHAI, and it combines machine learning, human observation, and more traditional computation tasks. The key is to break down the overall task into subtasks, and then finding examples of humans doing the subtasks, and from that, finding the best way to do each subtask. They significantly outperformed their competitors.

Researchers demonstrate first human use of high-bandwidth wireless brain-computer interface

'Deepfaking the mind' could improve brain-computer interfaces for people with disabilities

When I tried to use the EPOC headset many years ago, I was faced with an existential quandry. You're supposed to put on the headset, and control a simple video game with your thoughts. But in order to prepare your headset, you have to teach it the first and most important lesson, which is the difference between having a thought and not having a thought.

Your brain isn't a quiet place, there's electric fields bouncing around all over the place, all the time, and in order to separate the signal from the noise, your headset has to known what is considered non-thought, "default state" activity. What does your brain sound like when it's not giving a command. Once we have that default baseline state, we can detect when you're giving an active, intentional command. Later on, we can start to differentiate commands, but to begin with, we just need to know what a command looks like, and what it doesn't.

To do this on the superscale, we would need to give the headset a whole lot of baseline data, which would require lots of different people to all wear these headsets all day.

Now, it looks like there's a way to make synthetic brainwave data, using generative adversarial networks (GANs), and then feeding it to the program. What used to take 20 minutes now takes 1 minute.

Wireless network controls brain circuits remotely via the internet

Relax, nothing to worry about

A new study shows that researchers can remotely control the brain circuits of numerous animals simultaneously and independently through the internet. 

The wireless ecosystem only requires a mini-computer that can be purchased for under $45, which connects to the internet and communicates with wireless multifunctional brain probes or other types of conventional laboratory equipment using IoT control modules.

"They can remotely perform large-scale neuroscience experiments in animals deployed in multiple countries," said one of the lead authors, Dr. Raza Qazi, a researcher with KAIST and the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Becoming the Artificial Unconscious

The first step to becoming a computer is to think like a computer. The next step to becoming a computer is to materialize those thoughts, perhaps in the form of pictures. 

The Surrealists did this with our collective unconscious. At a time in history when humans were becoming "modern", they took the dark mess of confusion that was our subconscious and made it visible. They used automatic artmaking, dream recall, and mind games like Exquisite Corpse to hack through our subconscious and bring back precious material to help us understand ourselves and what we were becoming.

Today, we are again becoming new kinds of human. Our minds are merging with the computer algorithms we have created, so they in turn create us, in a never-ending feedback loop of evolution. 

Art has lots of purposes, but I like to think the most important purpose of all is to teach us how to be human. And today, being human has a lot do with being a computer. This is what computer-brains look like on the inside:

They're also calling it social media performance art. But I think artists have been doing this for quite a while, under the name generative digital art, or algorithmic art. I just wonder what the Surrealists would say if they could see this stuff.

First of all, the MIT Press has a journal called Leonardo. Next, here is a nice explanation of the artistic process by neuroscience researchers, written in the online science magazine Medical Express.

"Ultimately, we sought to explain the role of implicit learning processes in artistic cognition, or how the competition between different brain networks can lead to a more effective artistic intuition."

And they found that "weaker" prefrontal circuits, which are related to executive functions, can actually lead to more effective artistic cognition. The researchers refer to this phenomenon as the Andras effect.

"For example, if a photographer can tune down her control functions and access to long-term memories, she can perceive a 'different world'; a world without expectations or past memories," Nemeth said. "We can call this intuitive photography."

I'm also thinking now about how the chemical promiscuity of olfactory receptors makes mindful, environmental odor exploration (paying attention to smells) a great means to exercise your artistic mind.

Notes on Cognitive Fiction

Agency Panic
-the panic of attributing consciousness to all kinds of systems, and about the difficulty of locating control at any one level of existence – the difficulty, in other words, in deciding what a person is. (p34, Tabbi referencing Timothy Melley’s agency panic of humanist backlash in contemporary U.S. culture)

We are at a loss to grasp how discursive social structures might impinge on individuals without depriving them of all capacity for autonomous action.

Knowledge, Fact and Contingency
Knowledge is the holding, or accumulation of facts, which in themselves exist, or are constructed anthropically, as an extension/precipitating of agreed-upon units. A fact is a product of prior facts, irreducible, infinite, like fractals. And they require a structure, held up by the beliefs of a society. And so facts are contingent upon the facts that make them up (in infinite recursion) and upon the subjects, the participants, the observers that agree upon their validity, and cement their sturdiness for further knowledge.

Programming vs Selection
Evolution is a process of selection rather than programming and thus the brain, and consciousness as well.

Reading Cognitive Fiction
-Can be thought of as interpreting/criticizing texts either analytically or psychologically

-Can force the question of how to represent thought and construct subjectivity
