They were able to scan virtually any Internet-connected Kia vehicle’s license plate and within seconds gain the ability to track that car’s location, unlock the car, honk its horn, or start its ignition at will.

Post Script: The Kia-hacking research group first began to assemble in late 2022 when they accidentally triggered rental scooters across their collge campus to honk and flash their lights for 15 minutes. At that point, the group “became super interested in trying more ways to make more things honk.

Banksy's 'Valentine's day mascara' mural freezer removed

The mural shows a 1950s housewife with a swollen eye apparently pushing a man into an abandoned chest freezer, but the chest freezer was real, while the rest was painted on the wall. Then the freezer was stolen. So now the refrigerator is a work of art, in part, and art history is being re-written by the day. This was done for Valentine's Day, 2023.

Islington Council said its graffiti removal team is aware of the artwork and won't remove it.

I'm not even sure how to say this without it coming out wrong, but like you know your society is fucked up when the people are so wholeheartedly supporting illegal activity:

Crowds have gathered to see the mural, with one local saying they were "proud" their street had been chosen.

"It feels like a personal message to us residents, we just feel so proud," said Wanja Sellers, who lives along the street from the mural.

I am left wondering if there is no such thing as public art anymore? Public anything? What happens when there's no more public assets (public art, public music, public space, public parks, public restrooms, public water fountains, public benches, public transit, public public)? People start making their own, illegally, and the rest of the people start supporting it. Please rewind to the movie Death Wish, when hoodlums used a spraycan to terrorize, vandalize, rape and murder a middle class architect and his family living on the Upper West Side of New York City in 1974. Graffiti, and the spraycan specifically, was the ultimate symbol of societal dysfunction, collapse even. It was the mark of the beast, the trumpet of the apocalypse. Today, well things are much different. (Then again, Angela Davis's afro was scary as hell to a lot of Americans and now it's a Halloween costume.)

Post Script: 
The council believes the cherry tree in the foreground of the artwork is around 40-50 years old and is in declining health, with decay and fungi damage. It says it has been maintaining and pruning the tree for some time - both for safety, and to help prolong its lifespan - and will continue working to keep the tree alive. A resident says "It's spring now, and this tree should be bursting forth with leaves, but Banksy must have cycled past and thought how miserable it looks."


Examining why egg yolk was used in Old Masters' oil paints

The work involved creating two types of oil-based paints, both with yolk added. One mixture consisted of nothing but yolk and oil. The other had yolk, oil and pigments to add coloring. The team also created similar paints without using egg yolk. The group then used the paints to create paintings that could be used for testing purposes. Such tests included taking measurements of moisture amounts and movement, oxidation, time to dry and heat capacity.

AI photos show people with secondary breast cancer their lost future

I'm sure there's a history for this, but I'm not familiar with it. People have been aware of their own impending death for a long time, not just because of advances in cancer diagnoses (the guy with the "black spot" in Treasure Island anyone?). And artists have been making shit up forever, it's kind of what they do. All that being said, wow this is bonkers -

Using AI and photos taken by renowned photographer Jillian Edelstein, the images make up the Gallery of Hope at London's Saatchi Gallery.

Louise Hudson, from Caldicot, Monmouthshire, is one of those who took part.

Now 58, she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2022 which then spread to her liver. In February an MRI scan showed lesions on her brain and she was told she had a life expectancy of about six months.

Louise's image at the exhibition shows her celebrating her 60th birthday by performing with her amateur dance company Chelsea Ballet, while her husband of 30 years Barry looks on with pride.

The Most Famous Image in the Early History of Computing : History of Information

Just in case this gets lost in the oncominig artificial info wars and subsequent death of the internet, I copy here:

In 1839 weaver Michel-Marie Carquillat, working for the firm of Didier, Petit et Cie, in Lyon, France wove in fine silk a Portrait of Joseph-Marie Jacquard. The image, including caption and Carquillat’s name, taking credit for the weaving, measures 55 x 34 cm.; the full piece of silk including blank margins measures 85 x 66 cm.

This image, of which perhaps only about 20 examples survived, was woven on a Jacquard loom using 24,000 Jacquard cards, each of which had over 1000 hole positions. The process of mis en carte, or converting the image details to punched cards for the Jacquard mechanism, for this exceptionally large and detailed image, would have taken several workers many months, as the woven image convincingly portrays superfine elements such as a translucent curtain over glass window panes.

The Jacquard loom did no computation, and for that reason it was not a digital device in the way we think of digital today. However the method by which Jacquard stored information in punched cards by either punching a hole in s standardized space in a card or not punching a whole in that space is analogous to a zero or one or an on and off switch.
  • The Jacquard method was used by Charles Babbage
  • It confirmed the potential of using punched cards for the input, programming, output and storage of information in the design and conception of the first general-purpose programmable computer the Analytical Engine.
  • It also challenged existing notions that machines were incapable of subtlety, and blurred the clear lines between industrial production and the arts.

  • More than once this woven image was mistaken for an engraved image.

  • The image was the subject of the book by James Essinger entitled, Jacquard's Web. How a Hand Loom led to the Birth of the Information Age (2004).

The Hacker Crackdown


I got this book because the author, Bruce Sterling, is a science fiction writer, so I thought he would have an interesting point of view on the topic of computers and criminals. Soon it became apparent that the book is required reading for anyone who uses a computer. It's also a captivating genesis story of the Electronic Frontier Foundation

Once people realized this, their instinctive dread of the telephone as an eerie, unnatural device swiftly vanished. A "telephone call" was not a "call" from a "telephone" itself, but a call from another human being, someone you would generally know and recognize. The real point was not what the machine could do for you (or to you), but what you yourself, a person and citizen, could do through the machine. (p7)

The E911 Document and the Trial of Craig Neidorf aka Knight Lightening
Neidorf had deliberately and recklessly distributed a dangerous weapon. ... Neidorf had put people's lives in danger. In pretrial maneuverings, Cook had established that the E911 Document was too hot to appear in the public proceedings of the Neidorf trial. The jury itself would not be allowed to ever see the Document, lest it slip into the official court records and thus into the hands of the general public and, thus, somehow, to malicious hackers who might lethally abuse it.  Hiding the E911 Document from the jury may have been a clever legal maneuver, but it had a severe flaw.

There were, in point of fact, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people already in possession of the Document, just as Phrack had published it. It's true nature was already obvious to a wide section of the interested public (all of whom, by the way, were at least theoretically , party to a gigantic wire-fraud conspiracy.) Most everyone in the electronic community who had a modem and any interest in the Neirdorf case --already-- had a copy of the Document. It had already been available in Phrack for over a year. Becoming the Artificial Unconscious

The first step to becoming a computer is to think like a computer. The next step to becoming a computer is to materialize those thoughts, perhaps in the form of pictures. 

The Surrealists did this with our collective unconscious. At a time in history when humans were becoming "modern", they took the dark mess of confusion that was our subconscious and made it visible. They used automatic artmaking, dream recall, and mind games like Exquisite Corpse to hack through our subconscious and bring back precious material to help us understand ourselves and what we were becoming.

Today, we are again becoming new kinds of human. Our minds are merging with the computer algorithms we have created, so they in turn create us, in a never-ending feedback loop of evolution. 

Art has lots of purposes, but I like to think the most important purpose of all is to teach us how to be human. And today, being human has a lot do with being a computer. This is what computer-brains look like on the inside:

They're also calling it social media performance art. But I think artists have been doing this for quite a while, under the name generative digital art, or algorithmic art. I just wonder what the Surrealists would say if they could see this stuff.

Melbourne artist and coder Sam Hains created Zero Likes, an AI trained to respond only to those lost and lonely images that miss out on attention.

First of all, the MIT Press has a journal called Leonardo. Next, here is a nice explanation of the artistic process by neuroscience researchers, written in the online science magazine Medical Express.

"Ultimately, we sought to explain the role of implicit learning processes in artistic cognition, or how the competition between different brain networks can lead to a more effective artistic intuition."

And they found that "weaker" prefrontal circuits, which are related to executive functions, can actually lead to more effective artistic cognition. The researchers refer to this phenomenon as the Andras effect.

"For example, if a photographer can tune down her control functions and access to long-term memories, she can perceive a 'different world'; a world without expectations or past memories," Nemeth said. "We can call this intuitive photography."

I'm also thinking now about how the chemical promiscuity of olfactory receptors makes mindful, environmental odor exploration (paying attention to smells) a great means to exercise your artistic mind.

The Navy says the sixth sense is the way to win wars.

Promising “new insights into intuitive decisionmaking,” the futuristic Office of Naval Research is putting together a new program to turn what it actually calls a “sixth sense” into a military advantage. “Evidence is accumulating that this capability, known as intuition or intuitive decision making,” the scientists say in a new proposal, “enables the rapid detection of patterns in ambiguous, uncertain and time restricted information contexts.” Mastering with intuition, the Navy says, should help troops with “Cyberwarfare, Unmanned System Operators, Information Analysts, Small Unit Leaders and other domains.”

The Navy doesn’t want to reserve the power of intuition for seasoned sailors. By commissioning greater study into how it works, the Office of Naval Research wants to “train non-experts to be more effective decision makers.” First, it has to create a “computational model” of how intuition works, followed by “training techniques & technologies that enhance intuitive decision making performance.”

The Navy isn’t the only one intrigued by neurology’s prospects for warfare. Years ago, Darpa sponsored a program called Neurotechnology for Intelligence Analysts, which sought to break down the cognitive silos between textual data, imagery, audio and other sensory information. And last year, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency sought to get the entire body involved in analyzing satellite data.

“Analytical decisions are sequential, methodical, and time consuming,” says Cmdr. Joseph Cohn, another Office of Naval Research official. “Intuitive decisions rely on a more holistic approach and take place very quickly — on the order of 100s milliseconds.” In other words, if you master intuition, it’ll be hard for an enemy to act faster than you.

The U.S. military is working on computers than can scan your mind and adapt to what you're thinking.

Since 2000, Darpa, the Pentagon's blue-sky research arm, has spearheaded a far-flung, nearly $70 million effort to build prototype cockpits, missile control stations and infantry trainers that can sense what's occupying their operators' attention, and adjust how they present information, accordingly. Similar technologies are being employed to help intelligence analysts find targets easier by tapping their unconscious reactions. It's all part of a broader Darpa effort to radically boost the performance of American troops.

The computer learns how to use you, instead of the reverse: If a person's getting too much visual information, send him a text alert. If that person is reading too much at once, present some of the data visually -- in a chart or map.

"We began with the idea that there was too much information out there these days for anyone to comprehend," says Schmorrow. "So how can we present it in a way that people will remember? [By 2007] Darpa's involvement in Augmented Cognition program has mostly wound down. But the other military services -- as well as academic and corporate labs -- have picked up on the agency's efforts.

Neurotechnology for Intelligence Analysts: Even the best parsers of satellite imagery often miss the terrorist hideouts or missile silos hidden in the pictures taken from orbit. In tests, the Darpa project is improving these intelligence officers' accuracy as much as 600 percent. The secret is tapping into their unconscious minds.

...the military’s professional interpreters of satellite data want a more efficient way of reading the intelligence they get from overhead. Fingers on keyboards are so passe. It’s time to combine exercise and surveillance.

...something’s lost by static keyboard tapping. And that something could be an enemy target, or a missile deployment or an impending natural disaster. “Our thought processes are intimately related to the parts of our body we use to accomplish a task,” the agency contends in a new plea for small businesses to change the dynamic. “Many analysts describe a reduced ability to envision themselves ‘in the image’ when they are working on workstations with digital imagery compared to searching using films.”

While keeping an analyst’s eyes focused on the screen, the “novel methods” NGA wants would, theoretically, allow an analyst to “walk” through an image on a trackpad beneath her feet.

[To compare the majesty of the human brain to our well-worshipped computers]..

Markram estimates that in order to accurately simulate the trillion synapses in the human brain, you’d need to be able to process about 500 petabytes of data (peta being a million billion, or 10 to the fifteenth power). That’s about 200 times more information than is stored on all of Google’s servers. (Given current technology, a machine capable of such power would be the size of several football fields.) Energy consumption is another huge problem. The human brain requires about 25 watts of electricity to operate. Markram estimates that simulating the brain on a supercomputer with existing microchips would generate an annual electrical bill of about $3 billion. But if computing speeds continue to develop at their current exponential pace, and energy efficiency improves, Markram believes that he’ll be able to model a complete human brain on a single machine in ten years or less.
