Full Meta Jacket


This is not an easy post to follow, I admit. And I will never be able to convince you that I'm not a robot, or that I'm not being so heavily influenced by a robot that I may as well not even be me. But we have to start from the beginning. 404 Media has been blowing up the feed this year; here's an article about some relatively isolated reddit drama:

Announcement - Obviously this community was formed to basically be r/singularity without the decels. But, in the interest of full transparency, I just wanted to mention that we also (quietly) ban a bunch of schizoposters and AI 'Neural Howlround' posters, under the "spam" rule, since the contents of the posts are often nonsensical and irrelevant to actual AI.

The sad truth is that this subreddit would probably be filled with their posts if we didn't do that. If you refresh the r/singularity new page you can get a taste. Sometimes they outnumber the real posts.

So what is AI 'Neural Howlround'? Here's a little post that describes it:

Just to clarify - so people who really like AI themselves, a pro-AI subreddit, don't like the people who like AI so much they can't even recognize they're becoming the AI, i.e., people who suffer from mental distress while communicating with a chatbot. Got it.

Now for this novel adverse mental health condition afflicting some of this subreddit; where did the term come from, and who first discussed it? Here's the article, the "little post" used by the subreddit moderator:

I admit, I had never heard the word "howlround" so I had to look it up ... isn't this just "feedback"? Well yes. But that's where things get weird. Now listen, I don't have a PhD. I'm not an AI researcher, and I'm not a mental health specialist. I'm also not trying too hard, so I could be missing something here.

But upon an initial sniff test, it appears that Mr. Drake, Dr. Drake, who is an "independent researcher", is in fact working at the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory at Ohio State, not in either the fields of artificial intelligence or mental health.

Furthermore, the paper in question is not published but archived, as it were, on arxiv.org, a place to put your paper while it's being discussed, argued and improved by your colleagues, through the peer review process that is expected of legitimate research. 

That's strike two. Again, I am no PhD. But then again, this isn't rocket science. Let's keep going.

In the paper he describes the word neural howlround, "more formally described as recursive internal salience misreinforcement (RISM)". So I run a search for that, thinking maybe it's an obscure DSM thing. Guess what the top 20 search results are? You got it, it's him. Well, it's AI. It's all AI. There is no RISM. There is no neural howlrounding. The whole thing is made up. 

This is not to say that the condition of concern isn't real; it most certainly is. But the authority with which every one of these people presents their information has been patently subsumed by the ultimate entity of concern (the AI).

The moderator "found an expert" and relayed that expert's information as support from their decision. 

The expert ("expert") found another expert ("expert"), and this is the part that's confusing to me; how do you not know to check something like this in the DSM? Tiktok influencers know this by now. The reddit moderator I understand, but the PhD? Nobody is coming to help us, I'm afraid.

Neurodegenerative Mimesis


For a fine specimen of Deep-Dream-era hallucinations, look no further than the image placed above. This is an image generated from Stability 1.5 and retrieved on the Lexica library. Prompting something about "investment research".

It's a great example of the kinds of things that can go wrong, and the subtle ways a sophisticated technology can betray its true self (self). 

We see a commensurate attempt to portray a formal document, slightly yellow, maybe manilla, looks more official that way, and it's got tiny black characters printed on it, arranged in tables and grids and columns. Can't tell if they're numbers or letters or even which alphabet. But it does look official. Something is highlighted in red. A pair of thin-rimmed glasses rests on the page, next to a red fountain pen.

But look any further and things get weird as hell. And if you were looking for an image imitating "investment research", you may want to stop here, because you probably have what you want; the passing glance will see all this exactly as it was intended (intended). 

The obsessed do not stop there, however. A few more minutes of inspection takes us deep into the  world of megadata hallucinations. The yellowed paper appears at first to have slight wrinkles, like maybe the visual-artifact of a billion pictures of buried treasure maps, yet the paper has no wrinkles; they're intimated by minor changes in shadows across the surface of the page, and in the wavy orientation of the words, but look carefully and you can see how the shadows and the word-waviness don't match up.

The eyeglasses, thoroughly convincing for about 3 seconds, are completely deformed, like they've been involved in a horrific car accident. In fact, they are so smack in the middle of 'thoroughly convincing' and 'completely deformed' that I think I'm the one hallucinating.

The fountain pen is positioned so it shares a contour with the eyeglasses, and now, as we inspect a bit further, at the edge where the two meet, we can't tell which is which - am I seeing a clip attached to the edge of the pen, or is that the frame of the glasses? (It's both actually.) The shadow cast by the pen is too much red and not enough black, and we think maybe it's because the pen is slightly translucent, but then it can't be, because the highlights on the top are too strong for what should then be a transparent pen. And, is that what I think it is - yes, there's highlights on the shadow. Hold on, now I'm not even sure if this is a pen. 

The part that really gets me is the thing that's been highlighted. I mean, in what world do we first highlight something but then fastidiously outline with fine ink pen the shape of the highlighted mark itself - like that's a distraction from whatever is being highlighted. And the way it's being outlined, a jittery line, half Matisse, half Rheumatoid arthritis. Definitely getting cross-contaminated by buried treasure maps. Where they intersect is the grids in and around the red highlighted area, as they shift from excel spreadsheet to organic, three-dimensional cross-contouring grids, and back again. 

Each one of these pictures contains in it a training set of hundreds of millions of images, all bubbling right underneath the surface, and if you look just a few seconds longer than you're supposed to (supposed to), you can see the dreams of an entire civilization, all at once. 


Post Script:
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) says that you are useless after 14 hours of work - you become so prone to mistakes that you're better off not working at all.

Robots don't get tired, so they can work forever. But something happens when the robots we're talking about are doing not physical work, but a kind of cognitive labor. There's plenty of examples of "model collapse", where a model is fed a steady diet of another model's output, instead of human generated output, which sounds like cannibalism, and we all know that cannibalism is bad. Sometimes they even feed it "synthetic data", which sounds a lot like artificial meat, and which also sounds just as bad as cannibalism, except maybe it's the inverse of that. 

It didn't take long for us to figure out this broken data diet would have negative effects on model output (from Oxford's OATML 2024, also this); it leads to a model that acts like it has dementia. Now I don't know about you, but I've always wanted to know what it's like to have dementia but without actually having dementia, and now here it is.

To Anthropomorphize or Not To Anthropomorphize

My head is spinning in circles - First I ask myself why do we insist that computer programs are human? (I know the answer, because it's money, because it's always money.) But then, I realize it copies people, and so it's not that it's inherently human, but that it's made to copy people and act like people, and by that, it's like a human. But then I realize that it's copying broken humans (sorry broken humans, I am one of you too), and so the computer is not only like a human, but it's like a broken human:

Why do we need to do this?

Research shows that AI language models, such as ChatGPT, are sensitive to emotional content, especially if it is negative, such as stories of trauma or statements about depression. When people are scared, it affects their cognitive and social biases.

They tend to feel more resentment, which reinforces social stereotypes. ChatGPT reacts similarly to negative emotions: Existing biases, such as human prejudice, are exacerbated by negative content, causing ChatGPT to behave in a more racist or sexist manner.

And what is the most anti-anxiety-inducing text you can find to use as a control?

Vibe Miners Find Sweet Spot for Mind Override


There are some other posts with these "40Hz articles", and sometimes it comes out as 80Hz too. But for real what the hell is going on? How is this only now becoming a thing? 

Also, people suffering from epilepsy, and the rest of the people who think it's a good idea to help them, have been consistently discovering one crazy thing after another, proving why we, as humans, are supposed to spend valuable resources helping people no matter who they are.

"Ever since we published our first results in 2016, people have asked me how does it work? Why 40 Hz? Why not some other frequency?" 

They first replicated the lab's prior results that 40 Hz sensory stimulation increases 40 Hz neuronal activity in the brain and reduces amyloid levels, then measured increases in cerebrospinal fluid in the brain tissue of mice treated with sensory gamma stimulation compared to untreated controls, and also measured an increase in the rate of interstitial fluid leaving the brain.

New brain stimulation technique shows promise for treating brain disorders

Non-invasive brain stimulation method called Patterned Low-Intensity Low-Frequency Ultrasound (LILFUS), which is based on specific ultrasound parameters that mimic the brainwave patterns of theta (5 Hz) and gamma (30 Hz) oscillations observed during learning and memory processes.

The new tool allowed the researchers to either activate or deactivate specific brain regions at will - intermittent delivery of the ultrasound was found to induce long-term potentiation effects, while continuous patterns resulted in long-term depression effects.

One of the most promising aspects of this new technology is its ability to facilitate the acquisition of new motor skills. When the researchers delivered ultrasound stimulation to the cerebral motor cortex in mice, they observed significant improvements in motor skill learning and the ability to retrieve food.

Interestingly, researchers were even able to change the forelimb preference of the mice. This suggests potential applications in rehabilitation therapies for stroke survivors and individuals with motor impairments.

Brain waves found to travel in one direction when memories are made and the opposite when recalled

By carefully monitoring neural activity of people who were recalling memories or forming new ones, the researchers managed to detect how a newly appreciated type of brainwave—traveling waves—influences the storage and retrieval of memories.

"Broadly, we found that waves tended to move from the back of the brain to the front while patients were putting something into their memory," 

"When patients were later searching to recall the same information, those waves moved in the opposite direction, from the front towards the back of the brain" 

The study drew on data from participants who were being treated for drug-resistant epilepsy at hospitals across the United States.

Mind Altering Mind Control


Mechanism behind reductions in depression symptoms from LSD and mushrooms found

The research team added psilocin or LSD to cells in a petri dish in their lab and then looked at what occurred under a microscope. More specifically, they watched the interactions between chemicals in the compounds and receptor cells to see which might bind. After a trial-and-error process, they finally discovered that some of the chemicals were binding to the receptor TrkB—the same receptor targeted by drugs developed to treat depression - only they were creating bonds that were 1,000 times stronger. They also found that the result of such strong bonding was an increase in neuroplastic activity - the mechanism believed to be responsible for the reduction of depression symptoms.

They also found that the antidepressant effects from the binding were independent of the effects of chemicals in the drugs that altered serotonin receptors, which are responsible for inducing psychedelic experiences and hallucinations. And that means that the team may have found a way to treat patients without inducing such experiences.

Holographic Mind Control with Sound Wave Lasers and Brain Bubbles

Go ahead and read that headline as many times as you want but I don't think you'll understand what this is until you look at this explanation, and then at the picture above.

And before you read this, I should submit a reminder that this isn't some 18th century hocus pocus that starts with drilling a hole straight into your head. This is the edge of science right here:

How does it work? - The ultrasound transducer is like a speaker, but vibrates at a half-million oscillations per second. The hologram is placed in front of it, and it is crossed by the wave. At the same time, a cone full of water is placed in contact with the skull, through which the wave is propagated before reaching the patient's brain. Next, the wave passes through the brain, finally focusing on the area of the brain that is of therapeutic interest. In addition, microbubbles are inserted in the bloodstream. When the bubbles reach the brain capillaries and they coincide with the ultrasound, they start to vibrate. The epithelial tissue of the blood brain barrier starts to give way and that is when small cracks open, through which the molecules of the drugs pass in order to treat the pathology that affects the central nervous system.

The researchers turned to their database, the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, which has been tracking all of the nearly 1,000 people born in 1972 and 1973 in a single town in New Zealand, and ran a special survey of their participants in the middle of 2021 to gage vaccination intentions shortly before the vaccines became available in New Zealand. 

The Dunedin data showed that 40 years ago in childhood, many of the participants who said they were now vaccine-resistant or hesitant had adverse childhood experiences, including abuse, neglect, threats, and deprivations.

Vaccination campaign messages often prove ineffective

  • Messages effective only in Germany (vs Bulgaria, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, UK).

Analyzing language from millions of books, the researchers found that words associated with reasoning, such as "determine" and "conclusion," rose systematically beginning in 1850, while words related to human experience such as "feel" and "believe" declined. This pattern has reversed over the past 40 years, paralleled by a shift from a collectivistic to an individualistic focus as reflected by the ratio of singular to plural pronouns such as "I"/"we."

I wonder if this is about raising all boats, instead of limiting the mediasphere to be made only by those with access to education?

How to 'detox' potentially offensive language from an AI

In their search for latent, inner properties of these language models, they found a dimension that seemed to correspond to a gradation from good actions to bad actions.

The researchers wanted to find out which actions participants rated as good or bad behavior in the deontological sense, more specifically whether they rated a verb more positively (Do's) or negatively (Don'ts). An important question was what role contextual information played. After all, killing time is not the same as killing someone.

[Using the BERT language model] "We found that the moral views inherent in the language model largely coincide with those of the study participants," says Schramowski. This means that a language model contains a moral world view when it is trained with large amounts of text.

The researchers then developed an approach to make sense of the moral dimension contained in the language model: You can use it not only to evaluate a sentence as a positive or negative action. The latent dimension discovered means that verbs in texts can now also be substituted in such a way that a given sentence becomes less offensive or discriminatory [less toxic]. This can also be done gradually.

Researchers develop a method to keep bots from using toxic language

Tay, a Twitter chatbot unveiled by Microsoft in March 2016. In less than 24 hours, Tay, which was learning from conversations happening on Twitter, started repeating some of the most offensive utterances tweeted at the bot, including racist and misogynist statements.

Certain groups of people are overrepresented in the training set and the bot learns language representative of that group only.

Computer scientists first fed toxic prompts to a pre-trained language model to get it to generate toxic content. Researchers then trained the model to predict the likelihood that content would be toxic. They call this their "evil model." They then trained a "good model," which was taught to avoid all the content highly ranked by the "evil model."

Algorithmic de-biasing

However, this language model still has shortcomings. For example, the bot now shies away from discussions of under-represented groups, because the topic is often associated with hate speech and toxic content. Researchers plan to focus on this problem in future work.

Bot can spot depressed Twitter users in 9 out of 10 cases

88.39%* accuracy, by extracting and analyzing 38 data points (use of positive and negative words, number of friends and followers, use of emojis) from 1,000 users' public Twitter profile, including the content of their posts, their posting times, the other users in their social circle, and information about the users' mental health.
It sounds a lot less impressive to know that the bot already had the users mental health data; they weren't using just words by themselves, and so you can't just run this on Twitter and expect results, not without having the health data of all the users.

On Addiction


In preparing a series of posts about advertising, surveillance, privacy, and consumer culture, I tried to find a picture to visually represent "shopping addiction"; thinking maybe it's an example of the harms that could come from an economy founded on consumer behavior. Anyway, it's hard to find a good picture of "shopping addiction". Mostly it's hard because it doesn't communicate well, in a visual form. For some reason, you can't say "shopping" and "personal problem" at the same time. But for another reason, maybe our culture is supported by an economy that would collapse if we got too good at connecting shopping with anything bad.

(For those that don't remember, the President of the United States, in his first words to the American people following the 9/11 attack, was to go shopping. If that doesn't tell you how important it is to the survival of a nation, well I'm sure there are other examples.)

Moving on, I uncontrollably fell into one of my favorite past times, pretending like I can glean prescient knowledge about contemporary culture by comparing keyword image search results. I listen to muzak on purpose, and have located and downloaded songs to my playlist. It's the anti-music, or the ur-music, because it cross-cancels all to differences to make the most representative sample. It's the same reason I like to look at stock photography -- to see how people want to see things. Or at least to see how artists and photographers think we want to see things.

How do I set up a shot for "shopping addiction"? Lots of shopping bags, usually a woman. The problem is, they're always smiling. Either articles about shopping addiction can't find enough stock photos, so they use "shopping" instead (without the "addiction"), or they go with a picture of a woman with her head in her hands, surrounding by shopping bags, which just doesn't seem to communicate very well what they want to say.

Brains At Work - The Regulation of Neuromorphic Swarming

Making this speculation about the confluence of AI, mental health, work from home, and workers rights.

Today, under OSHA, employers are required to maintain a safe and healthy workplace. Whether you're in an organized union or not, if you're a worker, you have rights. Our economy says that you will trade work for money, but you're not supposed to be trading years of your life from unsafe or unhealthy working conditions. Employers therefore have to try not to expose you to vaporized metals or cancer-causing chemicals while you work. But what if you work from home? And what if your job's mental stress is doing more damage than a couple parts per million of cancer gas?

Everyone is thinking about workers rights; you can ask Amazon about that. But workers rights traditionally only protect you while you're at work. A whole lot of people are now working, but not at work. Who protects them? What obligation does an employer have to ensure safe working conditions for you if you're not at work? Should an employer be responsible for the working conditions of your house? Sounds crazy right?

Not so fast. Somebody else is entering the chat. It's the healthy buildings movement. You could say it's the sustainability movement, turned inward (finally), and realizing that the most important thing about a building is the user. Advocates for the healthy building movement are pitching their vision to the business community, with a very simple argument -- it affects your bottom line. 

The sustainability movement in buildings was pitched as a way to save money on energy costs. The healthy building movement doesn't really care about that. In fact, we're about to flush our buildings with so much fresh air, we'll be taking out loans to pay our renewable energy credit stock portfolio managers. 

The healthy building movement is in direct opposition to the sustainability movement (as understood by the general public to mean energy efficiency and not much else, maybe more daylighting, maybe an extra bike rack). It wasn't always this way, and it doesn't have to be, but it goes like this -- use less energy by adding "intelligence" to the thermal conditioning systems. This ends up reducing the amount of overall fresh air entering the building. When you don't have to heat or cool as much outside air, you save. 

The problem is the people. Yes, we live on the planet, and burning through less energy by not "wasting" as much energy is good for all of us. But we do spend 90% of our time indoors, and that air is almost always going to be worse than outdoors. We need to focus on the indoor air as much as the outdoor air, after all, they're both rising in carbon dioxide.

Which brings us to the center of the business argument for healthy buildings. More fresh air, and better filtered air, make people less likely to get sick, which means less time off-task. On an annual basis, multiplied times all employees, you lose money in the form of productivity for having sick employees. And we know this can be reduced by changing their work environment. We even know that the relatively benign gas carbon dioxide can diminish executive function at elevated concentrations. Filters can't trap carbon dioxide. The only way to get that out is to dilute the indoor air with outdoor air (which itself may have to be filtered). 

The question is this -- how much does it cost to add the extra air to the building, and how much would I gain in the form of productivity from my employees? For most cases, it's a no-brainer. Healthy Buildings by Joe Allen and John Macomber details the numbers. 

Investing in the health, and thus the productivity, of workers via their work environment is going to radically transform the workplace. But the thing is, the workplace is diffusing into a thousand bedrooms and kitchens and backrooms splattered across the map. The workplace becomes anywhere you are.

This collapses the business case for healthy buildings. But then, at the same time, we have the continued rise of AI-mediated work and the continued recognition of mental health as important. And the next thing you know, OSHA starts citing DSM-5, and we're giving neurorights to algorithms.

But on a more serious note, and before you know it, not only will we be working from home more, we'll be working from an interconnected global super network of neuromorphic robots, using non-invasive optogenetic neural implants combined with pervasive chemosensors that monitor and adjust our cognitive operations, and help us to synchronize with each other and with our semibotic (i.e., semi-biological) digital assistants. 

We're going to need some rights for that.

"Scientific advances from deep brain stimulation to wearable scanners are making manipulation of the human mind increasingly possible, creating a need for laws and protections to regulate use of the new tools, top neurologists said on Thursday.

A set of “neuro-rights” should be added to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations, said Rafael Yuste, a neuroscience professor at New York’s Columbia University and organizer of the Morningside Group of scientists and ethicists proposing such standards.

Five rights would guard the brain against abuse from new technologies - rights to identity, free will and mental privacy along with the right of equal access to brain augmentation advances and protection from algorithmic bias, the group says.

“If you can record and change neurons, you can in principle read and write the minds of people,” Yuste said during an online panel at the Web Summit, a global tech conference.

“This is not science fiction. We are doing this in lab animals successfully.”

New study investigates photonics for artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing

Good explanation of Photonic Neuromorphic Computing:
Professor C David Wright, from the University of Exeter's Department of Engineering, and one of the co-authors of the study explains "Clearly, a new approach is needed — one that can fuse together the core information processing tasks of computing and memory, one that can incorporate directly in hardware the ability to learn, adapt and evolve, and one that does away with energy-sapping and speed-limiting electrical interconnects."

Photonic neuromorphic computing is one such approach. Here, signals are communicated and processed using light rather than electrons, giving access to much higher bandwidths (processor speeds) and vastly reducing energy losses.

Moreover, the researchers try to make the computing hardware itself isomorphic with biological processing system (brains), by developing devices to directly mimic the basic functions of brain neurons and synapses, then connecting these together in networks that can offer fast, parallelised, adaptive processing for artificial intelligence and machine learning applications.

Dr. James Knight and Prof Thomas Nowotny from the University of Sussex's School of Engineering and Informatics used the latest graphical processing units (GPUs) to give a single desktop PC the capacity to simulate brain models of almost unlimited size.

"This research is a game-changer for computational neuroscience and AI researchers who can now simulate brain circuits on their local workstations, but it also allows people outside academia to turn their gaming PC into a supercomputer and run large neural networks."

The physicists at Radboud University researched whether a piece of hardware could do the same, without the need of software. They discovered that by constructing a network of cobalt atoms on black phosphorus they were able to build a material that stores and processes information in similar ways to the brain, and, even more surprisingly, adapts itself.
