No Man's Game


No Man's Sky is a procedurally generated spacefaring video game. You explore the universe, maybe find a nice place to settle down, build yourself a home, and drift off into the eternal digital bliss of a digital anthroposphere.

What makes this game special is that, like the real universe, the places you can explore are veritably endless. That's because they weren't designed in advance; it doesn't exist until you go there. The universe is generated in real-time, as you play. It's not created by a designer, it's created by an algorithm, using fractals to scale things far in and far out with equal levels of detail. That's how procedural generation works. Until it doesn't.  

One day, the developers of this game decided it needed an upgrade, so they augmented the procedural generation algorithm. They gave the worlds more detailed weather patterns and more complex lifeforms, taller mountains, deeper oceans, more richness, more diversity. But every time you fix something, you risk breaking something else. And that's what happened here. A story as futuristic as intergalactic space travel itself:

After finally finding a planet that reminded him of Earth with a mellow breeze, he settled in and spent more time building his own personal base. Then, he logged into No Man’s Sky to find that the newest Origins update had changed his planet to be more like a tepid, hell-like wasteland.

“I was one of these people on the hunt to find the perfect Earth like planet, and after spending soooo many hours hunting for it, then spending so many hours building a few big builds on it... it all seems for nothing now.”

Long-time community members have organized a new system to find beautiful homeworlds for a fresh start. Macneill runs a group called No Man Sky’s Habitable Planets. The group was originally intended for nomads who were okay with uprooting for a new home, but Origins made their mission much more urgent for many players.

“Looking for a new planet to call home? This group is dedicating [sic] to exploring the vast universe for the most perfect and habitable planets,” the Reddit page reads. “NO STORMS NO SENTINELS!!” “The goal was to have enough planets in our page so that someone could ideally just search what they want ‘green grass, blue skies’ and a planet with their desired features would come up.” Macneill told Polygon over Reddit.

Another player who is looking for a new home after aggressive fauna swarmed her base with the Origins update, now has a home in a world that looks abandoned. Fortunately, she can now just go on the Habitable Planets project and scroll through a selection of planets.

“It’s a little like Tinder,” Emily laughs. “I’m like, brown water? Ew, no. Mountain ranges? I don’t want to deal with that. Purple planet? Yeah, that’s cute, swipe right!”


Written a couple days earlier, a developer lamenting their consternation over destroying entire worlds worth of human endeavor with a single update:

“People have made their homes, they’ve lived in this universe,” Murray said. “I would be working on things like making mountains taller, and you’d see online that somebody has dedicated a planet to a lost loved one and built a base for them. And I’ve got my head in my hands thinking, ‘I’m going to destroy that planet if we do this.’”

Murray said that “some of the biome diversity,” will change universe-wide, but that “the fundamental shape of the terrain will stay the same on existing planets.”

Funny, as I read this, as a real person in the real world, all I can think about is that it sounds a lot like what's happening right now because of the climate apocalypse - the northeastern portion of the United States is one of the fastest changing climates in the world, with my town in particular having seen 2 different 500-year storms in the last 10 years (Irene and Ida), both dropping over 9 inches of rain in one day, which is almost triple what we see in any given month. Superstorm Sandy knocked down 100-years worth of trees in one day. If I lived in No Man's Sky, I would be looking for a new planet by now.


Post Script:
I finally figured out why the healthy fascination with random number generators (RNGs) here on Network Address; something tells me they're important, and will become a critical part of our world in the coming years, and here is one good example of why.

Randomness has a lot to do with the variety seen in procedurally generated worlds, which goes all the way back to rolling dice for Dungeons and Dragons. The game starts with a "random seed" from which the initial conditions of the algorithm are set in motion.* 

*And when you hear "initial conditions" you should think complexity theory and emergent behavior.

This is great for making totally unexpected and exciting virtual worlds, but it's also foretelling of the epidemic of electronic drugs that is today ensnaring our elderly citizens, armed services veterans, and new mothers via social media. We should have learned our lesson with machine gambling aka slot machines, but we didn't, and so we now have this:

Procedural generation is often used in loot systems of quest-driven games, such as action role-playing games and massive multiplayer online role playing games. Though quests may feature fixed rewards, other loot, such as weapons and armor, may be generated for the player based on the player-character's level, the quest's level, their performance in the quest, and other random factors. This often leads to loot having a rarity quality applied to reflect when the procedural generation system has produced an item with better-than-average attributes. For example, the Borderlands series is based on its procedural generation system which can create over a million unique guns and other equipment.

The randomness is an illusion, because absolutely minute parameters of the algorithm are changed in order to take advantage of the way our brains are hardwired. You can act like you're more powerful than the algorithm, or you can think that because you know how it works, you won't be a sucker. But then you would be wrong.

Teaching physics to neural networks removes 'chaos blindness'

Now the robots go to school to get an education, in this case, physics.

Must drop Vernor Vinge's 2006 Rainbows End, which describes the physics program that inform the simulated worlds of the future, making them very convincing. Some simulations have crappy physics packages, and glitch-out, disobeying classical mechanics etc.

Technicolor Vision

Colorblindness has nothing to do with infrared vision; I just thought these pictures were awesome.

There is no cure for colorblindness. There are special tinted glasses that help, but now there are dyed contact lenses. This article explains it more directly than I can:

"...dyed with a non-toxic rhodamine derivative dye. This particular derivative of rhodamine was chosen as it is known for its ability to absorb certain wavelengths of light in the optical spectrum. Researchers found that the dye blocked the band that lies between the red and green wavelengths, which is perceived by two sets of corresponding optical cones simultaneously. The removal of this band through the dyed lens inhibited the simultaneous triggering of the cones designated for green and red wavelength bands, enabling better differentiation between red and green colours."

First there was photoshop. The logical progression is video. And the logical progression of that is porno.

In this case, your face just got stamped onto Mia Khalifa, in action. The fake part is the face. And the implications go pretty far beyond pornography.

And really, how new is this? Not very - I've got a link here to a 2011 example of augmented reality faceswap. That means realtime. And that was 2011.

Reality Generators


What's real these days? Remember a few years ago an application that takes 5 consecutive photos of your family and blends them together so that nobody is blinking or making a stupid face? It takes the best faces of every person in the series of photos, and puts only that face in the picture. The final, fused photo documents a moment that never existed. Rather then, it is not documenting a moment, it is creating a moment.

Moving on, we now see an application that creates faces from scratch. The system looks at thousands of faces and learns what a face is, and then creates its own faces.

I'm thinking here about facial recognition and how I would like to now have a 'fake' face for a face so that nobody knows what my real face looks like. Can I do that? Better yet, can I have a nice little progam that makes entirely fake pictures from scratch, uses them to populate a fake facebook page, and then makes fake friends with their own fake pictures all talking to each other - an entirely fake social ecosystem or social network? Can we do that? How fake can we get until the fake thing is bigger than the real thing?

As part of their expanded applications for artificial intelligence, NVIDIA created a  generative adversarial network (GAN) that used CelebA-HQ’s database of photos of famous people to generate images of people who don’t actually exist. The idea was that the AI-created faces would look more realistic if two networks worked against each other to produce them.

Phantom attacks -- similar to adversarial image spoofing -- the thing is that we don't believe the car doesn't see the way we see. We can tell a projected image is not a real thing, and we assume an adversarial image is a fuzzy picture of nothing. But we don't know what it's like to see as a car sees, these spoofs work because they go unnoticed by us.

In other words, facial recognition algorithms have now gone totally apeshit.

I guess they're just looking at your neck, and reading your pulse that way. Do our faces (our heads really) move in the rhythm of our breathing, so slight that we might not see it, but a robotic eye-brain?

Now that we can get live physiological data from large groups of people, simultaneously, and in realtime, just by looking at them, it's no time to forget that we can read the date on a dime on the sidewalk from a satellite in orbit.

In extrapolation, all I can think about is Kim Stanley Robinson's Aurora (2015), where the multi-generational starship, equipped with a quantum computing AI instead of a captain, and after a civil war on the ship, finally "decides" that in some cases, it's better to let the air out of a biome than to let the people in it do harm to the ship, because, you know, for the greater good. The people don't die, at least most of them; instead they just get really, really tired and docile.

Narrative snippets have the ship dictating the "average pulse rate of the ship," meaning the average of every inhabitant of the ship,  data that an AI-equipped starship of the 22nd century can very capably know.

Who's about to riot? Those people with the quickening pulse, that's who. Face-recognition used to yield data on the outside, like your face. Now they can get data from the inside. Maybe "angry faces" is easy to identify, and might be more predictive than pulse. Maybe it's the same things. But something about a drone I can't even see, knowing what's going on inside my body, makes me think we're already living in these science fiction novels.

Ford is offering up to $50,000 to developers who deliver hardware or software that helps drivers understand the effect of the elements and driving habits on their fuel economy.

"We need to help customers understand the concept of personal fuel economy, based on their own individualized experiences, and give them tools to see, learn and act upon all the information available to know what to expect, how to improve, and even offer guidance in their shopping process," Farley said.

The announcement follows consumer complaints, class action lawsuits and a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency investigation into the gap between mileage posted on new vehicle stickers and what drivers claim they are getting.
