Post Script

Max Ernst and the rest of the Surrealists experimented with 'automatic generation' a hundred years ago.

I'm reading an article here about how we're now using 'robot-generated script' to make things funny. Because, you know, robots are stupid, and we like to laugh at stupid things.

You give a script-writing robot a thousand Seinfeld episodes and ask it to make a Seinfeld episode. And when it messes up, we laugh.

I'm saying all this half tongue-in-cheek. Don't get me wrong, a lot of this stuff is funny. Maybe these smarty pants experimenting with neural  nets can give you plenty of examples of what I'm talking about.

It's funny when a computer screws up. It's funny when anyone screws up. I had a classmate in third grade who wore yellow-tinted stonewash jeans, and I remember making fun of him and getting in trouble for it. The stonewash was right on for that time in the world of fashion, but the yellow not so much. Things have to be messed up to be funny, but not too messed up.

There's a good formula for funny (and a good graph too) which says the level of funniness in a joke is a function of the probability of the punchline vs your expectations. Researchers exploring 'creative AI' look at the novelty vs the quality, because to be creative we have to be new, novel, unexpected, but not completely out of the ballpark.

My friend in 3rd grade got the stonewash right, but not the yellow dye. A trained neural net (I call them all robots for short) gets most of the material right, but once in a while it throws in there something crazy (something wrong) and we laugh.

The part where things get tricky is when we stop to consider what  we're laughing at - is it the abstracted novelty of the output, or is it that we've assigned agency to the network and are now making fun of it for messing up.

I'm just saying, we might not want to get into the habit of poking fun at these things - not because they will one day retaliate and destroy us, but because they are a reflection of ourselves.

When Robots Become Human


That's it folks - robots are already too human. Maybe it's not a bad problem to have. Wait, or is it that we are now too much like robots (you see that guy crossing the street without taking his eyes of his phone?).

Couple things I'd like to keep track of here. Amazon's digital assistant is now modeling proper behavior for kids in the form of (rewarding) please's and thank you's. She's too real, and if kids interact with a thing (still pushing the term intelligentity) that's a lot like a person, and yet treating it like a servant by barking orders or calling it mean names, then in 20 years we'll have a society of jerks running around.

I must admit, at the outset I was disappointed to see some friends of mine talk to Siri with complete and utter disrespect, calling her the most vile names in the book, and snapping orders at her like a sub-human degenerate dirtbag.

I was also disappointed to see the headlines after the civil servant robot in Washington DC fell ("jumped") into the fountain - they joked about it committing suicide, as if suicide was something we joke about. Apparently as long as it's a robot doing it, suicide is a joke. I get it; if it's not alive, then how can it kill itself.

But the problem here is that it no longer matters if the thing is "alive" or not. What matters is if it -seems- like a human. We feel bad when robots stuggle. Maybe you remember the Boston Dynamics fail videos? They elicit empathy in us.

We are about as social as a social creature can get. Everything we do is part of an intricate, complex, social web of meaning. And everything we do is recorded by those around us as a model of how to interact with others. When you throw your video game controller at the TV as an adult, your kid sees that and thinks that's how you're supposed to treat your stuff, including the people in your life. This may be microscopic, but it adds up. If we all treat very human-like robots like sub-humans, then we end up with a society of kids who grow up learning to treat each other like crap.

You want your kid to be a misogynist? Just treat your wife like crap. You want your kid to be a jerk in general? Just talk to Siri and Alexa and the ATM machine etc like they're sub-human and you'll give them a shining example of how to do it. You want a young person who feels bad about themselves and is considering suicide to think that life is a joke? Make fun of things that "committ suicide." And the more human these things are, the stronger the effect.

Robots have already become like humans. That was the point from the beginning. We see faces in trees for ****'s sake; we want our robots to be made in our own image. But if we're going to -make- them like humans, then we need to -treat- them like humans.


Post Script

Final question then - can we still talk trash about the weather? "Ew, it's gross out here," she says on a humid day. Maybe that's not a nice thing to say to the weather; maybe the weather has feelings too? Let's start with the robots and wait for geoengineering to make a robot out of our weather.

The Uncanny Valley
The uncanny valley is a hypothesis in the field of human aesthetics which holds that when human features look and move almost, but not exactly, like natural human beings, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers.

The "valley" refers to the dip in a graph of the comfort level of humans as subjects move toward a healthy, natural human likeness described in a function of a subject's aesthetic acceptability.

Hypothesized emotional response of human subjects is plotted against anthropomorphism of a robot, following Mori's statements. The uncanny valley is the region of negative emotional response towards robots that seem "almost human". Movement amplifies the emotional response. (MacDorman, 2005)

There is nothing more intriguing than the repulsive: A car-crash, a rotting corpse, a deformed human - of the mental proclivity, particularly. The Uncanny Valley, however, is in another class of revulsion. It rides that fine line, the liminal zone of quasi- quantum- existence, the seat of all things aesthetic, where the tension between beauty and ugly is in not-exactly equilibrium-enough to stay that way, vacillating about its target. Am I irresistibly enthralled, or alarmingly frightened? None, and both; a flickering Necker cube of decision.

Perhaps the power with which the Uncanny Valley toggles our hedonic switch comes from our tendency, or is it our need, to seek ourselves in things that seem like us, in order that we might create ourselves, in our own image. We give animals emotions, we imagine dialogue between the sun and the wind; but most of all, we see ourselves in others. And that is how we make our selves.

Were it not for others, we would not be able to know ourselves. Something about sympathetic mirror neurons, collemulation, or mimetic desire. Catch-up on the mirrorbox. And the source is in the eyes, the windows to see through. But the story is worse than this. Were it not for those windows, we would not be able to create ourselves.

Look into the eyes of a robot, not just any robot, but one that falls just-so into the Valley. What do you really see?

You see yourself in those eyes, because you are human, and that is what we do. But you are afraid. One day, it may be you. All of you. And then what?

Do you want to be the robot, or are you afraid? You can't decide. It is against your program, rather, it has yet to be written. When something of such human-ness exposes itself to you, opening its reservoir of self-ness, you cannot resist. How does it look, the world through those eyes? Is it you? Could it be?

Never? We'll see.

Conclusion: Certainty and Uncertainty
The human desire for the intellectual mastery of one’s environment is a strong one. Intellectual certainty provides psychical shelter in the struggle for existence. However it came to  be, it signifies a defensive position against the assault of hostile forces, and the lack of such  certainty is equivalent to lack of cover in the episodes of that never-ending war of the human and  organic world for the sake of which the strongest and most impregnable bastions of science were  erected.
