User Friendly

The book User Friendly is great and highly recommended for anyone interested in design. This piece here has seemingly little to do with user design, but it's real good for the talk here on Network Address about algos and predictive analytics.

The Cambridge Analytica operation, circa 2013, showed us how powerful predictive analytics could be when combined with persistent pervasive behavior surveillance; I think most people forget how much "it knows"

A few dozen "likes" can guess:
  • race (95%)
  • marital status (88%)
  • political party (85%)
  • marital status
  • religiosity
  • cigarette smoking
  • drug use
  • separated parents
70 likes gets you:
  • the Big 5 personality trait survey responses
  • better than a friend could guess
150 likes:
  • better than a parent
300 likes:
  • better than a partner

To synchronize is only human. No need to resist. The meatnet is our future.

One of those things that I should be really excited about but I'm not because I thought we were doing this like ten years ago: "This system could allow artists to control the robot swarm as it creates the artwork in real time". Now if we got swarms of artists to control swarms of robots in real time?

A University of Washington team is doing telepathic collective problem-solving. It's called BrainNet. Three people play a Tetris by talking to each other with their brain waves and wireless signal. I don't know why this doesn't freak me out as much as the networked monkey brains

Misinformation Networks


Entire networks, vast, deep, and coordinated. Not to imply conspiracy theories; they aren't that coordinated. But they are big, and myriad.

A description of how one of these networks operates:
"The group was able to gain followers by setting up innocent-looking pages and groups. It later renamed them, and started posting politically-motivated content...including topics like immigration, free speech, racism, LGBT issues, far-right politics, issues between India and Pakistan, and religious beliefs including Islam and Christianity."

They call it "co-ordinated inauthentic behaviour". I don't recall hearing this as part of the story of digital surveillance in general, but it sounds like an improvement. (Well, there's articles dating back to Nov 2018 at least, where this term is used.) Behavior is data-rich, and makes Content look one-dimensional in contrast. Coordinated behavior is even more data-rich, because we're talking about the behavior of people in the context of other people.

Army of webcams used in net attacks

One of the biggest ever web attacks - in which more than one terabit of data was fired at a website to knock it offline - has been reported.

Web hosting company OVH said it had been attacked by a botnet (zombie army) of hacked devices such as webcams.

The previous largest attack was thought to be one on security expert Brian Krebs' website which hit 620Gbps (gigabits per second).
