Enhanced weathering could transform US agriculture for atmospheric CO₂ removal

Enhanced weathering - adding crushed basalt to soils using existing agricultural infrastructure; the basalt reacts with CO2, taking it out of the air; it also could improve air quality by interacting with the soil nitrogen cycling processes to reduce the formation of ozone and fine particulate matter.

Ocean-surface warming has more than quadrupled since the late-1980s, study shows

Ocean temperatures were rising at about 0.06 degrees Celsius per decade in the late 1980s, but are now increasing at 0.27 degrees Celsius per decade, a quadrupling.

Global ocean temperatures hit record highs for 450 days straight in 2023 and early 2024. Some of this warmth came from El Niño, a natural warming event in the Pacific.

When scientists compared it to a similar El Niño in 2015–16, they found that the rest of the record warmth is explained by the sea surface warming up faster in the past 10 years than in earlier decades; 44% of the record warmth was attributable to the oceans absorbing heat at an accelerating rate.

Scientists highlight alarming rise in marine heat waves worldwide

One group of researchers found that the number of such heat waves in 2023–2024 was 240% higher than any other year in recorded history.

Extreme ocean heat does not mean climate change is accelerating

Sulfur Makes and Sulfur Takes


You can't make it up - the pollution that's been part of the climate change problem, is also part of the solution to the climate change problem. 

And even better, literally see use of the word "Termination Shock" in the wild:

Reduced sulfur content in shipping fuel associated with increased maritime atmospheric warming

The International Maritime Organization's 2020 regulation (IMO 2020) reduced the maximum sulfur content allowed in shipping fuel from 3.5% to 0.5% to help reduce air pollution, but they also cool the Earth's surface in two ways by directly reflecting sunlight back to space and by affecting cloud cover.

They calculated the effect of IMO 2020 on the atmospheric levels of sulfate aerosols over the ocean and how this affected cloud composition, and found substantial reductions in both the levels of atmospheric aerosols and the cloud droplet number density, with the greatest reductions in the North Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea, and the South China Sea - the regions with the busiest shipping lanes. 

Then they estimated the effect of IMO 2020 on Earth's energy budget since 2020, and calculated that the estimated effect is equivalent to 80% of the observed increase in the heat energy retained on Earth over that period.

The authors suggest that the substantial modeled effect of IMO 2020 on Earth's energy budget demonstrates the potential effectiveness of marine cloud brightening as a strategy to temporarily cool the climate. However, they also warn that the intended reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions due to IMO 2020 potentially causing an inadvertent increase in marine atmospheric temperature is an example of a geoengineering termination shock, which could affect regional weather patterns.

Computer models show heat waves in north Pacific may be due to China reducing aerosols

The research team noted that the onset of the heat waves appeared to follow successful efforts by the Chinese government to reduce aerosol emissions from their country's factories. Beginning around 2010, factories and power generating plants in China began dramatically reducing emissions of aerosols such as sulfate, resulting in much cleaner air.

The models also showed why - as less heat was reflected back into space over China, warming of coastal regions in Asia began, resulting in the development of high-pressure systems. That in turn made low-pressure systems in the middle Pacific more intense. And that resulted in the Aleutian Low growing bigger and moving south which weakened the westerly winds that typically cool the sea surface. The result was hotter conditions.

Marine cloud brightening models show unexpected consequences of geoengineering

Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) - injecting massive amounts of sea salt into the lower atmosphere to serve as tiny mirrors, bouncing heat and light from the sun back out into space.

The work involved configuring established climate models to show what would happen if artificial stratocumulus clouds were created under two different scenarios, both over the North Pacific: one over the temperate latitudes and the other over sub-tropical waters. Under both scenarios, the artificial clouds were generated and maintained for nine months every year for 30 years.

The researchers found that the artificial clouds would reduce temperatures in the western U.S., primarily California - reducing risk of dangerously high temperatures by as much as 55%. But they also found the same clouds would reduce rainfall amounts, both in the U.S. and other parts of the world.

The research team also found that if the MCB project continued to the year 2050, its benefits would taper off and heat waves in Europe would become much more common, showing that engineering projects can lead to unforeseen consequences in other parts of the world.

Climate change might be the single best case study we have for understanding not just misinformation but memetic propagation in general; it affects literally everyone on the planet (except the richest 5,000 people who aren't really affected by anything) and it's a really big deal, and it's happening at a time when we can monitor almost 100% of the world's communications; great opportunity.

The UK population collectively breathes out about 1,100 tons of methane and nitrous oxide every year; that's 0.05% and 0.1% of the UK's total human-generated emissions of the two gases respectively. 

The CO₂ in human breath is essentially "carbon neutral. As part of the respiration process, we consume fuels like sugars and fats, converting them into water and the carbon dioxide we then breathe out, so our exhalation contributes no more to climate change than we mitigate through growing crops.

  • What are the leading hypotheses for that 'plus something'?
  • Earth's energy imbalances, aerosols, El Niño, Antarctic and North Atlantic activity.

Did you get that? Not record breaking, record-record breaking. (And it's a total mystery.)


Investors are 'flying blind' to risk of climate lawsuits, researchers say

For example, U.S. oil and gas giant Chevron could be liable for up to $8.5 trillion alone, according to the authors' estimates. In 1990–2019, the company's profits were $291 billion. "It's possible that Chevron's business may in fact be net value destroying,"

Uncertainty abounds in seeding the sky to fight climate change, says study

We don't know what it will do, but we will do it anyway 

Recent studies have shown that the use of solid materials such as alumina, calcite, or even diamond particles could more effectively cool the climate while simultaneously reducing these side effects. However, there is limited understanding of how solid material injection affects the stratospheric ozone layer. 

The new research found that although alumina injection may have an advantage over sulfur dioxide in terms of reduced local stratospheric heating, there are "significant uncertainties" in estimating such injections' impact on the ozone layer.

The scenarios they tested would inject about 5 megatons of alumina particles into the stratosphere per year, which would compensate for about a quarter of the present-day radiative forcing caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The researchers estimate that the global mean ozone loss from these scenarios could range from negligible to as much as 9%, which is about twice the historical peak of ozone loss from chlorofluorocarbons in the 1990s.

Most Earth system models are missing key piece of future climate puzzle, researchers say

1. "What happens to the carbon in permafrost is one of the biggest unknowns about our future climate"
2. Earth system models (ESMs) are supercomputer-driven programs that can forecast future carbon emissions and climate dynamics. But most science research funding operates on a three-year funding cycle; too brief a time to train up model developers or to complete model development steps before teams turn over. Our understanding of the permafrost has drastically improved over the last 15 years, and we're not keeping up.

Study shows much more pollution leaking into atmosphere from oil sands operations than thought

Read where it says we've been using the oil companies for information but now we thought we would do something more pragmatic like fly over the space and record the emissions, you know like we'll go see for ourselves because you're completely lying about everything you do:

Analysis of the samples showed that toxic emissions in the samples were on average 1,900% to over 6,300% of levels reported by standard methods. The researchers point out that such levels indicate that air pollutants released by extraction of bitumen from oil sands are equivalent to all other sources of similar emissions across Canada combined.

Most clean power purchasing strategies do little to cut emissions

Today's most common procurement strategy - known as volumetric or annual matching - proved to be almost entirely ineffective in reducing long-term emissions in the U.S., and because companies can claim full decarbonization by simply calculating their total annual energy consumption and procuring enough clean energy to match that yearly consumption, regardless of when it is actually produced.

Instead, the temporal matching approach the researchers studied consistently succeeded in driving down system-wide emissions because it addresses the temporal mismatch between clean energy production and consumption. By requiring companies to procure their clean energy at the same time as they consume energy, the approach drives investments beyond wind and solar to include energy storage and firm clean energy technologies.

Geoengineering may slow Greenland ice sheet loss, finds modeling study

SICOPOLIS model simulations showed that stratospheric aerosol injection of sulfur dioxide would have a clear protective effect on the Greenland Ice Sheet, reducing sea level rise by about 30% compared to the worst-case scenario.

Homeowners insurance could go up more than 55% due to severe weather, inflation, Allstate warns

Allstate is warning customers their homeowners insurance premiums could be hiked more than 55% after the insurer asked the state to approve a series of rate hikes. (They ask for 36.9% but get approved for about 7.0%.)

“Our payments to help New Jersey residents recover from accidents and disasters have increased significantly in recent years and we need to adjust rates to reflect the cost of providing the protection our customers depend on,” Allstate told NJ Advance Media on Thursday.

In the letter to consumers, it said the increase is needed because of inflation and because of costs “due to our catastrophic exposure (severe weather) in the state.”



Newsflash - Pollution was helping us the whole time?
Research shows how air pollution has offset expected increases in rainfall

The expected increase in rain has been largely offset by the drying effect of aerosols.

"Prior to our study, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had concluded that the evidence was mixed and inconclusive for changes in U.S. precipitation due to global warming," said Bill Collins, associate laboratory director for the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at Berkeley Lab and co-lead author on the study. "We have now provided conclusive evidence for higher rainfall and also helped explain why past studies assessed by the IPCC reached conflicting conclusions."

Over the long term, aerosols cool the planet, which causes a drying effect. But they also have a faster, more local response. That fast impact depends on the season, with aerosols generally reducing rainfall in the winter and spring, and amplifying it in summer and fall over much of the United States.

Scientists create new idea on how to hack a warming planet: drying the upper atmosphere

They're calling it the Last-Ditch Toolbox:

Inject ice high up in the air so water vapor in the upper atmosphere would get a bit drier and that could counteract a small amount of the human-caused warmth.

High-tech planes could inject ice particles about 11 miles high, just below the stratosphere, where the air slowly rises. Then the ice and cold air rise to where it's coldest and gets the water vapor to turn to ice and fall, dehydrating the stratosphere. Injecting 2 tons a week could conceivably take out about 5% of the overall warming created by carbon.

So far there is no workable injection technique, he said.

Schwarz is not quite sure about what side effects could occur, and that's the problem, other scientists said.

Soil may release more carbon than expected, affecting climate change models

Soil stores 80% of carbon on Earth, and with increasing cycles and severity of droughts in several regions, that crucial reservoir is cracking and breaking down, releasing even more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In fact, it may be creating an amplified feedback loop that could accelerate climate change well beyond current predictions.

Here's a reminder that airplane and satellite surveillance are changing - rapidly - the data on carbon emissions:
US energy industry methane emissions are triple what government thinks, study finds

Using one million anonymized measurements from airplanes that flew over 52% of American oil wells and 29% of gas production and delivery system sites over a decade, and found that 3% of the U.S. gas produced goes wasted into the air, compared to the Environmental Protection Agency figures of 1%.

This is likely because more than half of these methane emissions are coming from a tiny number of oil and gas sites, 1% or less,

The overflight data shows the biggest leaks are in the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico. Contrast that with tiny leak rates found in drilling in the Denver region and the Pennsylvania area. Denver leaks are so low because of local strictly enforced regulations and Pennsylvania is more gas-oriented, Sherwin said.

Atmospheric observations in China show rise in emissions of a potent greenhouse gas

The GWP of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is 24,300 times that of CO2, and it's used primarily in high-voltage electrical switchgear in electric power grids. Atmospheric concentrations of SF6 have risen sharply along with global electric power demand.

Here is another example about how leaving sulfur pollution in the air may have been a better idea than taking it out:

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhalation of aerosols containing Legionella. These bacteria can grow, spread, and aerosolize through building water systems.

A recent dramatic increase in Legionnaires’ disease incidence has been observed globally, with a 9-fold increase in the United States from 2000 to 2018, and with disproportionately higher burden for socioeconomically vulnerable subgroups. 

Our results suggest that declining sulfur dioxide air pollution, which has many well-established health benefits, results in reduced acidity of aerosols emitted from cooling towers, which may prolong the survival duration of Legionella in contaminated droplets.

The reason that it feels much hotter than you'd expect from the increase in ambient temperature alone is that global warming is affecting the interplay between humidity and temperature, he said. In the past, relative humidity typically dropped when the temperature increased, allowing the body to sweat more and thus feel more comfortable. However, with climate change, the relative humidity remains about constant as the temperature increases, which reduces the effectiveness of sweating to cool the body.
So it really does feel hotter - it IS hotter, to the human body - than it used to, even at the same temperature.

In the past, climate change deniers accused scientists of exaggerating the threat of global warming. However, the evidence that is now emerging from Antarctica and other parts of the world makes it very clear that scientists did not exaggerate. Indeed, they very probably underrated by a considerable degree the threat that now faces humanity.

Cloud engineering could be more effective 'painkiller' for global warming than previously thought

Cloud Engineer sounds like a perfectly respectable career in the 2050's (not like the internet AI cloud, but like regular actual clouds)

Marine cloud brightening (MCB), also known as marine cloud engineering, works by spraying tiny particles, or aerosols, into the atmosphere where they mix with clouds and with the primary aim of increasing the amount of sunlight that clouds can reflect.

Researchers created a "natural experiment" using aerosol injection from the eruption of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. With machine learning and historic satellite and meteorological data, the team created a predictor to show that how the cloud would behave during periods when the volcano was inactive. This predictor enabled them to identify clearly the impacts on the clouds that had been directly caused by the volcanic aerosols.

And fyi: In the U.S., a team from the University of Washington recently carried out its first outdoor aerosol experiment from a decommissioned aircraft carrier in Alameda, California.

Sulfate particles have masked part of global warming by reflecting sunlight. In the last couple of decades, however, this cooling effect has reversed and now contributes to a warming due to extensive measures to improve air quality in many regions worldwide.

When removing emissions of reflecting particles, the particles and their cooling effect disappear in the order of days.

“The city of North Wildwood has been experiencing significant erosion of its berm and dune, especially along the northern sections of the municipality’s oceanfront, since the 1990s,” Army Corps officials wrote in a February update on the project.

According to experts, stronger wave action and more frequent storms will only be fueled further by human-caused global warming — bringing on more erosion.

Critics also say the beach protection strategy of replenishment, also done to bolster shores with sand for beachgoers each summer, has only encouraged more people to build homes and settle on the coast.

The climate porn is so hard to ignore, by the sheer irony of it all.

Findings from the study have revealed that in 15 out of the 16 applications examined, plastic products actually result in lower GHG emissions compared to their alternatives. The reduction in emissions spans from 10 percent to as high as 90 percent across the product life cycle.

Lower energy intensity during production, the weight efficiency of plastics, and superiority in upstream processes including production and transport all highlight the efficiency of plastic materials in mitigating emissions. Also, plastic packaging plays a crucial role in preserving the quality of food across a wide range of categories, helping prevent food spoilage and the GHG emissions it causes.

"Demand reduction, efficiency optimization, lifetime extension, and reuse/recycling are win-win strategies to reduce emissions effectively. Solely focusing on switching to alternative materials is not."

Engineered nanoparticles could help store excess carbon dioxide in the ocean

Hochella and his colleagues examined the scientific evidence for seeding the oceans with iron-rich engineered fertilizer particles near ocean plankton, encouraging phytoplankton to act as a carbon sink.

Researchers' analysis of 123 published studies showed that numerous non-toxic metal-oxygen materials could safely enhance plankton growth.

Cocaine synthesized in a tobacco plant

Cocaine that winds up in its leaves is not produced by elements in the plant converting 4-(1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinyl)-3-oxobutanoic acid to hyoscyamine, as has been thought. They found that it is instead produced by the two enzymes, EnMT4 and EnCYP81AN15.

To prove their discovery, the group genetically engineered a tobacco plant to produce the two enzymes in its leaves, which resulted in the production of small amounts of cocaine 

The team also notes that the amount of cocaine produced by the tobacco plant was far too low for use on an industrial scale; thus, their work will continue. Not mentioned in the paper is the possibility of synthesizing the two enzymes produced by both the coca and engineered tobacco plant as a more direct way to synthesize cocaine.

New York City's greenery absorbs a surprising amount of its carbon emissions

On many summer days (but not winter), photosynthesis by trees and grasses absorbs all the carbon emissions produced by cars, trucks and buses, and then some.

Most previous studies have calculated carbon uptake of vegetation by looking mainly at contiguous tracts of forest and grassland, but these comprise only about 10 percent of the metro area. Using newly available aerial radar imagery of New York City that mapped vegetation in unprecedented 6-inch grids, Wei and her colleagues included developed areas—the other 90 percent of the region, left out in most models. 

In other words, just when you thought climate science was at the top of everyone's agenda, you realize we know very little about a whole lot. And in light of this recent discovery, it makes you wonder how much of the carbon gas problem is really from de-vegetated cities and towns? Not to cast doubt on the contribution of fossil fuels, but where would we be today if we had been more conservative about vegetation, trees in particular, when developing for example the sprawling supermetropolis that is the United States East Coast? Factor the much more local heat island effect, and consider the difference in overall quality of life we'd be getting out of our built environment. (But also remember that landowners in the suburbs like grass and not trees, and that poorly funded municipal public works departments find it easier to maintain a town with no vegetation at all.)

Reducing steel corrosion is vital to combating climate change: Study

Global steel production has been rising steadily for decades—and because steel has poor resistance to corrosion (aka rust), part of that demand is to replace steel used in construction materials that have become corroded over time, in everything from bridges to automobiles. Reducing the amount of steel that needs to be replaced due to corrosion could have measurable effects on how much greenhouse gases are produced to make steel.

Using historical carbon dioxide intensity data to estimate carbon dioxide levels per year beginning from 1960, the researchers found that in 2021, steel production accounted for 27% of the carbon emissions of the global manufacturing sector, and about 10.5% of the total global carbon emissions worldwide. Corroded steel replacement accounted for about 1.6 to 3.4% of emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions produced by the steel industry could reach about 27.5% of the world's total carbon emissions by 2030, with corroded steel representing about 4 to 9% of that number (is that 1 - 3% of the total?).

But there is some good news, the study noted. Due to regulations placed on the steel industry, technological advances in the steelmaking process have resulted in a 61% reduction in energy consumption over the last 50 years.

Planting more trees could decrease deaths from higher summer temperatures in cities by a third, modeling study suggests

Of the 57 million inhabitants of 93 European cities circa 2015, 6,700 premature deaths could be attributed to hotter urban temperatures during the summer months, accounting for 4.3% of summer mortality and 1.8% of year-round mortality. One in three of these deaths (2,644 total) could have been prevented by increasing tree cover up to 30%, and therefore reducing temperatures. This corresponds to 39.5% of all deaths attributable to hotter urban temperatures, 1.8% of all summer deaths, and 0.4% of year-round deaths.

GHGSat: Commercial satellite will see CO2 super-emitters

Almost feels like the future:

The world's first commercial satellite dedicated to monitoring carbon dioxide from orbit will launch later this year.

It will be put up by the Canadian company GHGSat, which already flies six spacecraft tracking methane emissions. The new platform will use the same shortwave infrared sensor but be tuned to CO2's specific light signature in the atmosphere. The satellite will have a resolution at ground level of 25m, meaning it will be able to see major individual sources. Others make large area maps; they're not set up to hone in on super-emitters at the scale of an individual industrial complex.

(We already know where they are in general, this will just help us confirm the individual emitter.)

In addition, those who traveled and had experiences in nature as children were also more likely to report engaging in private "green behavior" as adults, such as recycling, driving or flying less, and taking shorter showers.

Machine-learning model "DeepSolar++" analyzed satellite images to identify where solar panels are and when they were installed in more than 400 counties across the United States, from 2006 through 2017, and then combined that data with information about each community's demographics as well as local financial incentives for solar power.

For low income groups, what works is performance incentives which reward customers based on how much solar they produce or how much less electricity they buy from the grid.

The New Digital Earth


We are on our way to creating a second Earth in the digital realm, where we can do experiments and run simulations to better understand the real Earth. It's called a digital twin, and it happens in other sectors like medicine (where we can test new drugs in a simulation of your body) or industry (where we can monitor all the variables in the manufacture of a product to find the most efficient method).

Developments in persistent satellite surveillance, vision and other sensing technologies, and climate modeling and forecasting keep getting better, and with each advance in these areas, the digital Earth twin gets closer and closer to the real Earth.

Real-time space observations can now keep watch over 'super emitter' power plants

They use NASA's "Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2" (OCO-2; launched in 2014) and the OCO-3, attached since 2019 to the International Space Station (ISS).

Google Earth on steroids' gives a boost to urban development

Uzufly's system uses drones to take aerial photographs, producing thousands of images that are transformed into 3D models through the creation of digital twins, or digital replicas of real-world objects. These objects could be buildings, for example, which are georeferenced down to the centimeter. The company's 3D models incorporate a wide range of urban-planning data and can accommodate any type of architectural design at full scale.

The camera is on the wrist, facing the body, and with that limited information, it can infer what the entire body is doing.

Once in a while I run an image search for something I think is totally random and will return equally random results, like "bumblebee porn". Well I'm here to remind you that anything-porn is not random. You can type [anything] porn and get a relevant result.

In this case, bumblebee is a transformer (although I don't recall this character from the originals circa early 1980's), and maybe he got a movie made recently, so he takes over the top results. And yes he's a robot, and yes robophilia is a thing. And on that note, I must recall the artist of sexy robot fame, Hajime Sorayama (also Japanese, thanks again).

In the last paragraph, a message from a passionate scientist says that Science needs to be more transparent, more open to communication with the public, and to use the massive channel to the public that youtube offers.

But the irony is that youtube is not a public entity. Neither is the internet the wild west it once was. It's monetized. That's a key point that seems to evade current discourse on this topic.

Videos that make people click will make more money. Posts that get shared make more money because they put the corresponding ad in front of more eyeballs. That's one half of the equation, the other half is that people love fake news. It's not like the National Enquirer hasn't been around for almost 100 years. so in the end, science can do all it wants try and combat conspiracy theories, but until the revenue scheme is changed, conspiracy theory stuff we always get more views.

(btw, The National Enquirer pays their sources, something other mainstream news organizations don't do as a matter of practice; should sound familiar to the above. They were also indicted but never charged on a count of sedition in 1942)
